Well, reactive oxygen species are very harmful byproducts of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. So when it comes down to it, oxygen kills us in the end.

Exactly what Kellkolo said, in fact this is why hydrogen peroxide kills some bacteria (anaerobic). Super oxide radicals O2- and hydrogen peroxide H2O2 are sometimes produced in cytochrome c oxidase in the electron transport chain. Generally cytochrome c oxidase adds 4 electrons to the oxygen O2, but it works too fast to be perfect. Luckily we have enzymes to change hydrogen peroxide and super oxide radicals back to oxygen and water. The reason that hydrogen peroxide kills so many anaerobes is because they don't have these enzymes (they don't do the electron transport chain).

Also, I was reading the comments and I believe someone was mentioning the use of cyanide. ATP synthase (another part of the electron transport chain) is regulated by cyanide. And, also, "Ozone" does not to my knowledge cause the aging process. Ozone is O3 and is a lung irritant and a part of our atmosphere, and if its being made in your body; you're probably a robot.

Just to add more to this, oxygen itself is deadly poisonous. Divers will flip a wig if they hear you refer to their air tanks as oxygen.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you stay on air long enough you die. How long are we talking for pure oxygen?

[–]B5_S4 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

According to wikipedia (super accurate as always) one-two days of nothing but pure oxygen will produce irreversible damage to the lungs, I'm sure you'd be dead before the span of 5 days.

[–]brand_x 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At one point, it was common practice to put severely premature infants in highly oxygenated (~84%) chambers. Speaking as one of those (former) infants, the lifelong impact of the irreversible (but non-fatal) damage is rather significant. Similar to severe emphysema, the sort that a life-long smoker might get. I'm fit for my age, can bench press significantly more than my own weight, have done a half-iron triathlon, several long distance canoe races, and the cycle to the sun. I still cough blood when I inhale the smoke of burning tar or other high-soot sources, and if while I can push my muscles to the breaking point, my lungs seize up when I overdo the aerobic part.

TL;DR; Oxygen is dangerous stuff.

[–]AshesThanDust 20 points21 points ago*

What he's saying is that a .999 repeating is actually mathematically equal to the number 1. EDIT: A lot of confusion on this point, for the purpose of this equation, 0.999 represents the infinite repetition of nines. I shortened it in the best way I could think of because I don't have the proper symbol available.

Check it out: x = 0.999 // 10x = 9.999 // 10x-x = 9.999 - 0.999 // 9x = 9 // x = 1 // 0.999 = 1

I think 100,000 billion might be high. I was looking into this a couple of years ago and the estimates are all over the place. But the highest estimate that I ever hear of was 7-8 Trillion. So like 1/20th of what you are suggesting. But that's just the best information I could find from the internet.

[–]movzx 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your wording implies that the 7-8 trillion is 1/20th of the 100 billion. Am I just reading this wrong? Because if not, I have some news for you.

[–]March_of_the_Strelok 1 point2 points ago

Hey and in low levels, they also stimulate cell repair pathways keeping your Genome intact a bit longer (until they ultimately screw it up beyond repair), but hey, blame senescence and apoptosis for ageing.

ROS just wants to see your cells immortalised, (totally not cancer, honest).

This. Free radicals from metabolizing oxygen are a primary (theorized) cause for cellular damage. That's why antioxidants are such big business and everything claims to have them.

[–]kitchendancer 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

primary (theorized) cause for cellular damage.

The idea that free radicals cause cellular and DNA damage is really well established and easily reproduced in the lab. It's one of the mechanisms your own body uses to kill bacteria and other pathogens. Nothing controversial about it.

[–]shahryarrakeen[!] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most anything you can safely ingest will bond with oxygen in your body. As a result, anyone from the cupcake bakery down the street to Frito Lay can claim their products have antioxidants and be technically correct.

[–]ridik_ulass 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I actually studied this about 13-15 years ago now so please ignore the mistakes I make, but I believe the respiration system produces small insignificant amounts of poison (cyanide or something) and even if we cured all disease and every other affliction known to man this inherit build up would kill us at the age 200-230 , at which point the build up would surpass tolerable levels.

[–]seeasea 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

maybe with small doses over 200 years, our tolerances would build up at the same time

[–]Shatgun 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the case of cyanide, I believe that would be akin to shooting someone in the leg every few weeks until they build up a resistance to bullets. Some things just kill us.

[–]JackOCat 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is true to some extent. Are cells have to do a lot of constant repair to deal with the effects of oxidization and the free radical particles that are released. They are up to the task though until we get old. The current thinking on why cells ability to cope with oxygen degrades though is current generally thought to be largely genetic.

So it is more like our genes eventually tell our body to stop making the antidote to air.

[–]reddelicious77 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

basically that's why you often hear it's a good thing to get your proper dose of anti-oxidants.

Life is a hallucination caused by inhaling oxygen. Stop huffing it and the trips over.

[–]emu420 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But think about it further: when you first take a hit (birth) you start feeling it a little bit, and as you keep inhaling you start to get higher and higher until you hit a peak (prime years, 18-early 20's). Eventually, as you keep inhaling, you start to build up a tolerance, as with all drugs, and the high gets less and less exciting as the tolerance builds (getting elderly), and at some point, at some time, the effects go away completely.

In the 1980's a group called the Breathairians claimed the opposite -- that air was all humans need to live, and don't need food. Wiley Brooks, the head of the group in Santa Cruz, CA, lost some followers after being spotted by a reporter at a 7-11 with a hot dog, a Slurpee and Twinkies.

On average, New Yorkers have longer life expectancy than the rest of the US.

It is. Well the oxygen part. Nitrogen (N2) is pretty inert, which composes most of Earth's air. Oxygen (O2) i pretty reactive and fucks up your cells. But you also need it to make ATP, so it's necessary.
