Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

She was 5 :) I didn't watch Rapunzel when I was young, I saw that one as an adult. I think I would have found it scary at that age... but then again, I am a big scardy cat.

I'm from Antrim. Once an American asked me if I knew his cousin from Cork. I don't think he gets it.

[–]serpentjaguar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe not, but on the other hand, you are to consider that to people from large countries like the US, Ireland really is tiny. I have a good Brazilian friend who's lived in the County Down for going on 12 years, and even now she is still often surprised at how inter-connected people in Ireland are. She travels all over Ireland and the UK for her job, and reports that in Ireland at least, it's not at all uncommon for her to run into people who know or are somehow connected to her husband's family. This would be totally unheard of in a huge country like Brazil or the US. Again, maybe you have to come from a huge country like the US or Brazil to appreciate how odd that seems to us. In any case, I would hazard the opinion that said American was operating on that basis and that when taken in that context, it's really not weird at all. You may know that there's a huge difference between Cork and Antrim, but to us, the distance is just a few hour's drive and is barely even into the next state over, if even that.

NZ's even smaller, and our new mobile company is called 2 degrees -on account of how we're allegedly all two degrees of separation from each other. I'd almost call bullshit, but it feels scarily close to being true.

Dammit it is both. It's in Northern Ireland but it's also on the island of Ireland. Stop making everything political./assumption you're from NI.

[–]thehumantowel 52 points53 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ireland refers to the entire island on which there are two states, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

[–]TheDuddy 64 points65 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everybody chill your tits and look at the fucking trees. I live in Northern Ireland, Geographically its the Island of Ireland, politically there are two separate countries, split into 4 provinces. Now shush.

[–]Birdie_Num_Num 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Correct. The OP posts a picture showing highlighting how jaw-droppingly beautiful Northern Ireland can be and yet again it gets overtaken by comments from people who can't see the wood for the trees (pardon the pun in the context of the photo).

[–]MasterOfDebt 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you are being technical it's Northern Ireland and Ireland.

It's a common misconception that the name of country is the Republic of Ireland which is a description of the State but is not its official name.

The Irish goverment has refused to sign documents that say the Republic of Ireland instead of Ireland.

There is a wikipedia page about the names of the Irish state.

[–]CaisLaochach 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Official name of the state is Ireland, not the Republic, actually.

[–]pretzelzetzel 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Saying "Antrim, Ireland" IS, in fact, misleading. Saying "Antrim, Northern Ireland" would be much more accurate. Generally, "Ireland" is taken to denote the Republic of same; I have only very rarely heard "Republic of Ireland" used informally. Is it correct to say, "Belfast, Ireland"? Certainly not. I wouldn't name my hometown as "Toronto, Americas" because naming the city/town/county and then the landmass it's on, skipping all other regional labels, doesn't make any fucking sense.

[–]serpentjaguar 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure, but unless you're an uptight prick or a loyalist idiot, you know what the OP meant and are more interested in the cool pic than you are in dickering over inane minutiae that the rest of are, quite frankly, sick of hearing about.

[–]redem 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You only "know what the OP meant" if you happen to know that Antrim is in NI, which I doubt many people do. Let's be honest, we're a tiny country with basically zero significance on the international stage.

[–]serpentjaguar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, that's exactly right and really only goes to reinforce my point which was that most of us don't give a shit about the technicalities of what geographical and/or political entities the County Antrim can or cannot be said to be a part of. For most of us, it's just a cool pic and it's enough to know that it was taken somewhere on the island of Ireland.

[–]pretzelzetzel 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was only replying to the guy who replied to the guy who brought the issue up in the first place. I wouldn't have brought it up, except for the fact that the guy who replied to the guy who brought it up was wrong.

[–]serpentjaguar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fair enough.

[–]I2obiN 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This actually makes sense. You'd never need to use the term "Northern Ireland" if "Ireland" was enough to cover it.

We don't say "Southern Ireland" or "West Ireland", we just say "Ireland". If we're referring to "Northern Ireland" we say "Northern Ireland".. not "Ireland".

You could call Northern Ireland "Ireland" if it was within the Republic, but it is effectively a separate region.

The obvious point is, yes obviously the island is "Ireland" and Northern Ireland is within that.. but then when would you ever say Northern Ireland for anything?

Really we should use Republic of Ireland as much as you use Northern Ireland, but I've generally found people to use Ireland to refer to the ROI and Northern Ireland to refer to Ulster Northern Ireland.

Surely using the word "Ireland" instead of "Northern Ireland" leads to horrible confusion like this post?

[–]serpentjaguar 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

and Northern Ireland to refer to Ulster.

Except for where it doesn't, as in Donegal, but I'm just being difficult and generally agree with your point.

[–]mervynskidmore 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I'm from Sligo, Ireland. Our country is called Éire or Ireland, not the Republic of Ireland so that's why we refer to it as Ireland. The only thing that is called "The Republic of Ireland" is the football/Soccer team.

[–]I2obiN 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That and it gets used on packets of cereal.

[–]twoplustwoequals5 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have never known someone to say Ulster when referring to Northern Ireland, and why would they whenever three of the nine counties of Ulster are separate from Northern Ireland.

[–]I2obiN 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, just another reason to say "Northern Ireland" rather then "Ireland" though.

[–]Cat-Dawg 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am from Donegal, I live near Malin head - the most northenly point on the entire Island of Ireland. I work in Derry, and spend most night in the village of Muff (no really) which if you were to draw the border - would run directly through the village f Muff. I work with catholics, protestants, born again christians and presbyterians. To say Ulster refers to NI is absolutely ludacris. You'd get in a lot of bother saying a generalisation like that around here.

[–]I2obiN 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well yeh Donegal is obviously in Ireland, when I said Ulster in the post I should've said NI.

[–]carlcon 1 point2 points ago

I didn't think this kind of BS was on Reddit. Ireland is Ireland is Ireland. We're a small enough island as it is without having people bring politics into a statement/photo that is entirely geographical/visual and intended to simply show location, and not political stance... or any of that nonsense.

Comparing a little island to a massive continent is crazy. Of course you don't day "Americas" because nobody says that. But 99.99% of people say "Ireland" when referring to where they're from, or where they visited. If you're asked officially for a passport, fair enough, North/Rep. matters then, but other than that, it's not even a discussion here.

If you take "Ireland" as meaning "Rep. of Ireland", that's your misgiving. No need to pass it on to us.

No wonder Americans still think we're bombing each other every week, if a bloody photo can't be posted with this nonsense arguing.

beacause he's not from the area. the republic was created in 1949. alot of people from the north consider themselves irish. using the example of canada is stupid. there is little contention amongst the populous about their nationality. there hasnt been a war there within the last half century about it. its an older established country unlike the artificial "country" that is northern ireland. thats why

[–]Vibster 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Irish republic was not created in 1949 it left the commonwealth in 1949, a better date would be 1919 when the declaration of independence was ratified.

[–]khazzar12 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are completely different countries. Ireland does refer to the whole island.

[–]IrishPidge 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope. "Republic of Ireland" is the description of the state, not the name. The name of the state is "Ireland", as recognised internationally and in Ireland's own constitution.

Ireland refers to two things (this really isn't that hard). One is the island of Ireland, and the other is the country "Ireland".

[–]MrMercurial 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This ^

What seems to be causing the confusion is that "Ireland" is a political term (it's the name of the state that comprises the 26 counties) but it's also a geographical term (which includes the state called Ireland plus Northern Ireland.) So, "Antrim, Ireland" is geographically correct but not (pardon the phrase) politically correct.

[–]IrishPidge 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly.

[–]killthezombie 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There was a map I'd seen someone put up here that helped explain this, but the Island itself, regardless of being two different states, is still referred to as "Ireland" - and can be defined specifically if you want. Its also partly down to citizens born north of the border having the ability to claim citizenship of either country.

For those not otherwise conversant on the subject, it would provide a good picture of how much of the English-speaking world came to be.

There'd be plenty of things thrown if you happened to spout that in ROI.

You could have said Northern Ireland, Ireland or The Occupied 6 Counties and someone would still have corrected you. As it happens I live about 5-10 minutes from the area in question. It's quite eerie.

Not necessarily a mistake. It is still Ireland, just not Republic of Ireland. You weren't wrong.

I think the submitter got it right, but if it makes you feel better to correct him rather than focus on the beautiful photo then go right ahead.

[–]ZombieCrossing 1 point2 points ago

The photo is indeed very beautiful. Correcting someone does not make me 'feel better', but I just thought I'd point it out for accuracy's sake.

I used to see that a lot as a bumper sticker when I was little. I was in the US, but there were a lot of off the boat Irish immigrants.

While I'm sure that was the case sometimes, I'm not kidding when I say that a large amount of my neighbors were from Ireland proper and had lived there within 10 years.

I grew up in Antrim, well, left when I was 6. Haven't been back for about 30 years.

Looks wonderful. I remember an old tower near where I lived, and my Granda lived near where Ulster 71 was held.

Good times.

I once stayed the night at a bed and breakfast near Antrim. A guy and his wife ran the house. The guy was the photographer of this picture, and his wife framed it for me. This picture's sitting over my parents bed back home. Fun fact.

Is this that road outside Crumlin (Or is it Glenavy?), coming up to the international airport?

I'm sure I've driven on it, but I think the trees are slightly higher and cover more. Maybe just a very similar road.

You are thinking of the one in dundrod. It has a little stone wall running beside the road. This is in armoy I do believe. Or near it anyway.

the norman invasion was in 1169 not the 1300s and they could hardly be described as british as most were french, welsh, or from mainland europe. 'Southern ireland' never existed, it was called the Irish free state established in 1922 and after the rebellion, partition was negotiated by the irish side in the treaty negotiations. The unionist population are not descendents of stormtroopers but mostly of planters. congratulations, you did not get one thing right.

EDIT: you say the original invaders were not invited. Not true, they were specifically invited by Diarmat McMurrough in order to regain the throne of leinster.
