When I see one of the "support cancer" posts, I repost and then add something like this: While breast cancer is pretty viscous, there are other cancers that are more deadly. Please educate yourself on lung and colon cancer, both cause more deaths than breast cancer. In Oklahoma, people who have no insurance and get any cancer other than breast cancer are frequently told that they are just going to die. Not to take anything away from breast cancer, but research for these others needs donations too. They do not have the media apparatus that breast cancer does and they kill more people. You can donate at www.cancer.org. Very few of my friends post the "support cancer" any more, they know that they will be told where to really support cancer.
P.S. I am a cancer survivor and it is a subject dear enough to my heart that I will tell you about your slacktivism.

I once pointed this out on facebook (I posted a site that had a list of reputable cancer research institutions to donate to) - and I got a flood of angry messages yelling at me about how I was being judgmental and insensitive.

I told them to put their money where their mouth is.

Here's the problem. Neither of those things actually will help that much depending on the cancer.

Breast cancer is a great example. We don't need more awareness of Breast Cancer. We don't need more money for Breast Cancer, we need radical new procedures that we haven't figured out yet. We need hard work, new ideas, and then funding those ideas. We have the money, we have the awareness, but we don't have the solution.

This isn't true for every cancer, but for the most of them volunteering unless you actual have a scientific degree probably won't help, giving money won't help. What we really need is time and science.

(P.S. This ignores if you have cancer and are volunteering for new procedures those can help. But I am pretty sure we're just talking about volunteering)

I posted (well copy and pasted) a status onto facebook bringing this point to light on a day where the news feed was flooded with these statuses. I was bitched out by all the simpletons who seemed to think they were all pious philanthropists and saving lives by "raising awareness." Who the hell isn't 'aware' of cancer?

I'm not sure.

I know that if you collect money while riding/walking/crawling a certain number of miles per unit of money collected, the cancer-fighting medicines funded by this research are far more effective than those which would result from just collecting money, even though you'd have more money to fight cancer if you didn't have to spend it on bike maintenance and refreshment stations.

So I'm guessing that riding/walking/hopping a certain number of miles, collecting money for that, and changing your Facebook status would be even more effective than just collecting money.

I was having a discussion about cancer today with a relative and we noticed we have NEVER met anyone or heard about any cases in our family or with the same religious beliefs as us that has cancer, but we both agreed we have met so many westerners with cancer.

Take a look at the statistics in the survival rate of all the cancers... We have plateaued for decades, and yet people throw billions of dollars to the same gigantic conglomerates to tell us we're going to be ok, right after they shoot us up with chemo drugs and radiation.

The sad reality is most of the money from donations goes to patents and copyrights of genes that help enlighten researchers on cancer & cover costs of usage of those genes, breast cancer... etc. Even after that, the solutions are often monopolized by pharmaceuticals that make you pay thousands for the drugs.Even after that changing your facebook status to be honest, would be considered a negative contribution to help the cause.
