“The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be.” ~ Douglas Adams

when someone posts a comment relevant to their username, people will often check out the user to make sure the account was not created just to post the comment. So in this case, CatsArePrettyCool has been a redditor for 8 months and the comment was just lucky coincidence.

[–]LeagueOfRobots 10 points11 points ago

Only in distance, remember. We have humans permanently in space now, and have done for the last 10 years. Not as spectacular as going to the Moon, but still pretty impressive.

I think I'm one of the few that considers the ISS to be just as impressive as the Apollo missions.

Serious question: do you have Asperger's or are you ten? In either case, you probably shouldn't be on the internet.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, don't go on to r/funny or r/adviceanimals, as you'll see things that will mangle your mind forever. Frogs pretending to live human lives having human issues with sanitation, penguins acting like they have difficulties with interpersonal human communications, even stories which end in a nonsensical line which would more appropriately go with another story.

If you were trying to educate us in some way, phrase it nicely (not just a comment of "Wrong mission."), or GTFO.

[–]neighborcat1-scratch 4 points5 points ago

EDIT: And reddit once again downvotes any knowledge on the space program.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You only have 4 downvotes 2 hours after your edit. You should be ineligible from complaining about downvotes until 10 at least. You gotta figure one guy downvoted you for "re-supple". Probably got one or two for not getting the joke that the cargo bay looks like a battery compartment on a toy, and then maybe you got one because of reddit's policy not to give accurate vote counts just accurate net totals.

So now, who is downvoting "any knowledge on the space program"?

[–]SuspendTheDisbelief 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh I was talking about manned space travel at all. Yeah they were a bit outdated... But still amazing. And you had to start somewhere, and the advances to modern tech that came out of developing them are fantastic.

[–]danman11 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not that they were outdated from a technological sense but they simply had a lot of design limitations such as not having a launch abort system (Mercury, Apollo, Soyuz, Shenzhou have them and future USA vehicles are planned to have them), being mounted on the side of the vehicle (this exposes the spacecraft to falling foam, this caused the Columbia disaster), only being able to launch/land in very specific weather conditions and only being able to remain docked to the ISS for 14 days (Commercial Crew vehicles are being required to be able to stay docked for 210 days).

NASA has two manned space programs coming up.

The first is ISS crew rotation being handled by the Commercial Crew program. The four top contenders are SpaceX's Dragon, Sierra Nevada's Dream Chaser, Boeing's CST-100 and Blue Origin's OV. Hopefully the program will down select to at least two. They are all re-usable, carry a crew of seven and capable of landing on traditional runways (the Space Shuttle needed a very long runway to land).

The second is the Beyond Low Earth Orbit program. The four man long-duration Orion spacecraft is intended to launch on the 130 mt lift SLS. Most likely the next destination is either the Moon or an asteroid.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I will always cherish it ;)

[–]Nick4753 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

AFAIK only the Dream Chaser has the Horizontal Landing option. Dragon lands much like the Apollo landers did (in water), CST-100 has an airbag design and I don't 100% know what OV intends on having

Dragon seems to be the furthest along. In that an unmanned Dragon capsule may be docking with the ISS in January.

[–]danman11 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well Dream Chaser will be the only one to land horizontally, but the other crafts can land on runways. Dragon will initially land in the Pacific but is intended to be upgraded to runway/helipad type landings. And I can't wait till the January mission. :)

(this exposes the spacecraft to falling foam, this caused the Columbia disaster)

Pardon my ignorance, but what is "falling foam"?

[–]danman11 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe it's what's used to keep the propellents cold, some of it typically falls off as a vehicle launches.

If someone else knows more about the foam, then I welcome their insight.

[–]Nick4753 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Foam that is falling, usually downward :)

The orbiter for the Space Shuttle was attached to the side of the large fuel tank. If anything fell off the top of the fuel tank, like foam, it would be traveling at considerable speed by the time it gets to the orbiter if the entire craft is rapid accelerating. Fast enough to bust a hole in the shuttle's re-entry heat shielding and allow extremely hot gasses to get inside the orbiter during reentry and tear the entire thing apart.

If everything is inline and the part with the humans is at the top of the launch vehicle there is no way falling debris can cause a problem, since there is nothing "above" it on the craft.

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just so you know, the Dragon can only lift ¼ (6000 kg and crew of 7) of what the Space Shuttle could (24,400 kg and crew of 4)

And if you do the math on he contract SpceX signed, it costs the same for them to lift the same amount of cargo over the course of 6 launches as it would have cost for one launch of the Shuttle.

[–]danman11 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you don't mind, I'd like to see the math.

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Okay:

Cost for one launch of the Shuttle: $450 million

Payload deliverable: Up to 24,400 kg

Cargo contract signed with between NASA and SpaceX in 2008: $1.6-3.1 billion

Number of flights in the contract: 12

Maximum cargo deiverable per flight: 6,000 kg

Amount of cargo to be deivered: Minimum of 20,000 kg

[–]sniper1rfa 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very true, if we had a chance to do it over, I'd want it done the same way.

At that height, "down" doesn't make sense.

Someone with space-knowledge... Is it just me, or is this extremely low orbit altitude? I've never seen a picture from space where the ground scenery could be seen so clearly that wasn't altered. Usually the "human features" of Earth are only visible in huge cities.

thats exactly what I thought, you can see roads and shit. Ill comment so I can find the answer to this later.

Don't look down because underneath you, there appears to be a pterodactyl.

An astronaut on board the ISS. You can clearly see a Russian Progress cargo spaceship creeping in at the top of the page.

Wowww... Has anyone actually seen the shadow from these things? Or is that even possible?

[–]kilo4fun 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think diffraction would make a shadow pretty undetectable at that distance.

Interesting thing is that at that height i wouldn't be afraid of looking down. But on top of a mountain i would feel some fear.

Would someone who suffers from vertigo be affected by this perspective if they were on the ship? Does vertigo stem from gravity?

[–]thegreatbritish 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I genuinely got vertigo from looking at this.

The scary thing is that the perspective points out that the shuttle really isn't that high up. Low orbit. You can see the shadows made by the clouds.

If someone were sent into orbit without their knowing and were acrophobic, would they suffer from a panic attack once they looked out the window?

[–]dmoted 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have an acquaintance who space-walked on a shuttle flight. He said the "low" altitude was extremely distracting and it always fell like he was going to fall, and he didn't fully relax until a while after the flight.

[–]triarchic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The land mass pictured looks surprisingly like a flying dragon. Even has small details that work well as a dragon. Badass!
