If abstinence isn't 100% effective, then we'll have to ask the Christians accept, that statistically speaking, abstinence is "about as effective" as condoms.

Instead, you can say that (statistically speaking) abstinence is less effective than condoms.

Condoms are regarded as being 97% effective (against pregnancy) but only have a 5% confidence interval, so there is still a statistical probability that condoms are 102% effective.

Abstinence is the decision to not do something. Being raped isn't a decision. Abstinence is not 100% effective.

I grew up a devote christian, well, devote as anyone who is taught from birth a belief. Anyway I really believed in no sex before marriage. The second a girl got naked in front of me and offered her self to me that all went out the window. After I had sex there was no way I was giving that up lol. I fealt guilty a lot but man it was awesome. In many cases young people don't choose abstinence, abstinence chooses them.

I don't even know what Abstinence is all about, aside from the fact that it is useless and stupid.

Only 100% effective method of birth control?

ABORTION!

[–]leprechaun3000 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone studying sexuality and has a passion for safer sex education there are two rates that we typically use when saying how effective a use of birth control is, one is "perfect use", which means if you do everything by the book, and the other is "typical use" which includes human errors, missing pills sometimes, etc. Abstinence has a very good "perfect use" rate but a horrible "typical use" rate because many young people that rely on it as their only form of birth control don't do it right (ie: they give in and have unprotected sex). If abstinence only pushers want to cite the efficacy for typical use of condoms (which includes sometimes not using them) then they should cite the efficacy for typical use of abstinence, which includes lots of people who end up having sex anyway.

Only dumb christians (duh...) don't know that she wasn't really a virgin but rather just a "young woman" and it all was a mistranslation

[–]Anaklusmos 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm pretty sure this is the majority of Christians.

Also that first part was redundant.

[–]samisbond 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would consider it a rather dumb thought even if it wasn't a mistranslation.

[–]Jepumy 2 points3 points ago*

It's not that straight forward:

  • Isaiah 7:14 uses the Hebrew word "עלמה" (translation: "maiden, young woman or virgin") when (allegedly) prophesying Jesus.
  • Matthew 1:23 quotes Isaiah 7:14, but since the New Testament is in Greek, it uses the word "παρθένος" (translation: "virgin").

This is what is perceived to be the mistranslation. It could be seen as that, or it could be seen as being more specific. Either way, Mary was most definitely a virgin according to the Bible due to Luke 1:26-35:

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. And [the angel] came to her and said, "Rejoice, favored woman! The Lord is with you." But she was deeply troubled by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. Then the angel told her:

Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

Now listen:

You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will call His name JESUS.

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.

Mary asked the angel, "How can this be, since I have not been intimate with a man?"

The angel replied to her:

The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

Therefore the holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

Hopefully you don't actually think the Bible suggests Mary was anything but a virgin. It's quite clear that that's what the Bible claims. Besides the direct statements other than "παρθένος" that Jupumy listed below, there's also context clues like Matthew 1:25 "25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus." Now why might it be important for Matthew to clarify that they weren't gettin' it on until Jesus was born, if not to suggest a virgin birth? Even before that is Matthew 1:20-23: "...because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit...22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son." Surely you don't think it's a revelation of angel-worthy proportions to just say "a young girl will have a kid," do you?

[–]sixcorners 0 points1 point ago

But... The image didn't have anything to do with virginity.

Maybe that's why all the Jesus freaks are always preaching abstinence. They just want the Second Coming.

[–]nineleggedoctopus 5 points6 points ago
