Jesus wasn't too bad Except for the whole "if you don't believe in me and love me I'll send you to be tortured in a pit of agony for eternity."

Did Jesus himself actually say that? I always thought he emphasized the eternal life with him bit but kinda pushed the hell side of it under the rug.

To my knowledge the word hell isn't mentioned anywhere in the OT (please correct me if I'm wrong). It's only until gentile Jesus, meek and mild comes onto the scene in the NT that hell is explained as a real place. Here are some of Jesus' teachings on hell from the gospels and a few other NT greatest hell hits:

  • And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28

  • The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:41-42

  • If thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. Matthew 18:8-9

  • Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. ... And these shall go away into everlasting punishment. Matthew 25:41, 46

  • ... into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. Mark 9:43-48

  • The hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. John 5:28-29

  • In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction. 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9

  • And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:14-15

I have no doubt the NT talks about hell quite a bit. But did Jesus himself ever talk about it? What Matthew/Mark/etc says and what Jesus says are arguably two different things. I'd think if they managed to capture Jesus speaking of hell, they'd be sure to include that juicy nugget in the Bible. Or at least, put some nice juicy words in his mouth.

End of Matthew, ch. 25: “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” Those are printed in red in my KJV.

Who the fuck cares about what the real Jesus might or might not have said 2.000 years ago, nowadays the bible is all that is left of what he supposedly did say.

Actually there are alot of Christians that don't believe in the concept of a hell with eternal torture. I am one of these. Only twice (listed above)in the bible could someone possibly get that idea, and even those verses could be interpreted other ways. Anyways, it says he will "destroy" you in hell, says "the gift of god is Eternal Life, while the wages of sin is Death." Implying eternal life is a reward. It actually Never says in the bible that mans soul is eternal. It says "the wicked will be ashes under the feet of the rightous" Burnt up by the "lake of fire" Just one of the reasons I get why so many dislike Christianity. If you look at life as a gift and eternal life as a reward for loving our fellow mankind, rather than a ultimatum where the other option is torture, it really changes everything. Plus the stuff modern christians actually do understand, like love they neighbor, they ignore and are still assholes.

well, I grew up reading the Bible, so it was normal for me. Since I became a non-believer, I never took the time to go back and read it again.

I convinced a Christian friend to flip his family's huge coffee-table bible to a random page and read it and see if he actually agreed with what it said.

Person stoned to death for cutting wood for his family on the Sabbath. God agrees that this is good. Friend now agnostic. Winner!

Agnostic what? Agnostic thiest or agnostic atheist? I'm guessing agnostic atheist but who knows.

I'm not sure where he is about it now, but he primarily fell into the "screw organized religion, I want to find things out for myself" stance at the time so Agnostic Theist.

It's okay..

This is more like my face when I try to talk to people who actually feel the Bible is applicable to modern life, and offer their own "interpretation" of it.

Or who believe that God is the author. I suppose they also believe Chef Boyardee and Aunt Jemima are actual chefs.

And I'm all "Do you even know how much damage the King James translation did to this book?"

[–]burke_no_sleeps -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And Aunt Jemima was a "real" fictional character. The operative word in the sentence above is "are": in theory, people who believe God currently exists AND wrote the Bible Himself would be likely to believe in other fictional / fictionalized / iconic but impossible characters.

I doubt the swill currently produced under the Chef Boyardee brand matches what Chef Boiardi was cooking. It'd be interesting to find out; I wonder what his original recipe was?

So incredibly true. Currently trying to wade through Revelations, to see what all the fuss has been about, and...wow. Just wow. I keep on thinking I'm misreading things, or maybe reading a bad translation, or something, because the idea of something so crazy, petty, and materialistic being seen as the last word on morality is too bizarre to seriously entertain. Not only is the Bible not a good guide to morality, it seems to be a significantly less spiritual book than anything by Dawkins or whoever. If I have to read about the the precious, valuable material out of which something is made or with which someone is clothed one more time...

hey, this sounds a lot like a written version of the oral tradition common to people of the middle east and surrounding areas several thousand years ago, possibly written/retold for tens of thousands of non-writing years. Oh it's literally true? no we can't be friends.

Mine was more struggling to keep my eyes open, because it was so boring.

I probably approached the Bible in the reverse way from most people: I was raised secular and heard all the nasty parts of the Bible first, and I thought I would be a hypocrite if I protested against the religion just from reading nasty cherry-picked parts.

So I slogged through it, cover to cover. But it didn't help. The parts between the genocides are just boring bullshit.
