Mozart’s art didn’t include choirs singing the patrons’ names at strategic moments. Thematic influence is generally acceptable because the artist can still execute it well to create an aesthetic experience. Promotional insertions distract the viewer/listener, alter the experience, and ultimately undermine the inspiration — unless the artist is sincerely this inspired by Reebok shoes, in which case I’d say the work is frivolous.

On a sidenote, this ain’t no Mozart. This 3D gimmick is getting old.

Yeah my first thought seeing the reebok ad is that it's cool they're helping make this art happen. This is the largest of these things I've seen and I'm sure it takes some money to do plus the artists have got to make a living and they can't sell the sidewalk in a gallery. You could say that by putting reeboks name in it it undermines any good will but you gotta remember a lot of the great art in western civilization was created under patrons to further their own reputations, and plenty of modern commercial art has made its way into the fold of the fine art world.

No they aren't, because art is about the subject and the creator, not the sponsor. When it becomes about the sponsor then it's just an advertisment. It cheapens the subject and makes a whore of the artist.

Art is about appreciating talent, it's about reflection on the message, it's not supposed to make you think about running shoes FFS.

The sponsor would have been the church, not the Pope specifically and the entire subject of the chapel painting is religion. It is a advertisement for the church, "come look at our amazing roof, also donate your money!" Michelangelo wasn't painting what he wanted, he HAD to paint something religious.

It was painted to glorify God. It was not painted as a loss leader to get shoppers into a building. The payment came from the Vatican, which is the same thing as it coming from a pope.

Michelangelo did not paint it for money, in fact it nearly killed him. He did it for art and the celebration of the subject matter.

An advert for a religion, in a religious building, seen only by religious people while engaging in religious acts, does not seem much of an advert at all IMO. It's the definition of preaching to the choir.

That's interesting, and they do make some good points. Not everything that is pushed by crossfit can work for everyone. But it is something that worked for me and I enjoyed doing it.

I don't pay to go to an affiliate I just enjoy the techniques on my own. It's the idea of diversified and functional fitness that I like about it. Keeps things interesting. When I was in the military, we were just switching our workout regimens to something very similar to crossfit. People seemed to enjoy to challenging, diverse, unique, and intense style of crossfit and as long as you knew your limits and used correct form you would be fine.

Great link, I read a lot of great pints for both sides. But it seems like most of the problems people have with crossfit are things that occur in any fitness subset: bad trainers, lack of thorough knowledge on the part of the trainer and trainee, superiority complexes, or just not liking that particular style of training.

I agree that crossfit is not for everyone, just like marathon running or olympic lifting or gymnastics may not be for everyone. The point I am making is that if you enjoy doing it and are well informed enough as to know how to do it correctly without injuring yourself, it really does work. The same can be said for many other fitness programs.

I used to go to a box and the trainers there were great. They really kept you motivated and made sure you weren't letting your form go to shit when you got tired or were trying to too hard to go beyond what you could handle. But some of the trainers were really leg intensive sometimes and if I walked in and the WOD was all lower body when we had done legs the day before, I would just sit out that WOD and do my own thing.

I think the problems crossfit has with inept trainers, ignorant practitioners, and a superiority complex can really be applied to any sport.

It probably wouldn't look anything like what it's supposed to from practically any other angle.

I've always wanted to see one of these in person so I could walk around it and see how weird it looks from angles other than the intended one.

They don't look great when you look at them IRL because your brain works out the slightly different perspectives from both eyes. They look amazing in photos though.

I've seen these things in real life and they look just fine (about as good as in the photos). Usually the distance for the optimum viewpoint is sufficiently far enough away from the drawing that the distance between your pupils becomes immaterial. If you weren't able to see the illusion in person then either you saw some mediocre attempt at it, or you weren't standing at the place you were supposed to be standing, or your eyes are set reaaaally far apart (like a foot or two). Are you a hammerhead shark?

She's doing an American swing, where you take the kettlebell over your head. Different style than a Russian swing, which just brings it in front of your face. American swings are standard for most Crossfit workouts, which is what these guys (and girls) are doing.
