Wasn't Barney a competent, responsible adult at one point before the being the town drunk gig?

[–]786yht 111 points112 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, Homer turned him on to beer and he turned into a instant drunk.

When he was trying to study for the SAT's, no less.

For Yale.

Seriously, the story of Barney is one of the most tragic in The Simpsons.

Grimes was right about Homer, I never thought his infrequent acts of kindness made up for all the shit he did.

You can't blame Homer for Barney's alcoholism. If not Homer, someone else would've eventually turned Barney towards beer. The problem lies with Barney's infatuation with alcohol. In Deep Space Homer, they give Barney a toast and he goes nuts. "I don't understand, that was non-alcoholic champagne".

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but Barney was against alcohol, it can be argued that Barney's trust in Homer persuaded him.

He could have found the drink, but then he could have at least been a drunk with a masters in something.

Aren't we all drunks with a masters in something?

You're probably right but remember that not everyone is a good person and there's no rule that says that even main characters must be likable. Thinking back on it, I really don't like any of the characters on the show as people, but I relate to them all for the good and the bad things they've all done. This is one of the many reasons the show was so unique and beautiful.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Definitely, I in no way mean to detract from Homer as a character, it adds that level of depth that kept me interested in The Simpsons for so many years.

[–]kochipoik 2 points3 points ago

I feel the same way. I always wondered why Marge stayed with him with all the shit he put her through. But that's love, I suppose

I don't know, Homer did discover Barney and suggest that he replace Wiggum in the Be-Sharps.

[–]asator 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No he didn't. Skinner, Apu and Homer all heard Barney singing in the bathroom at the same time.

[–]rockytheboxer 4 points5 points ago

I suppose Homer just offered membership, and that stuck in my head.

[–]tgunter 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never thought his infrequent acts of kindness made up for all the shit he did.

You see, I think that's the biggest problem with the Simpsons.

When the show first came out, Homer was dimwitted and lazy, but well-meaning. He genuinely cared about his family. As the show went on, he became more and more self-centered, and stopped caring about anyone other than himself.

The characters (and not just Homer by any means) have become caricatures of themselves as the show has gone on. They're just being held together by the hollow cliches they established years ago, and have lost any of the nuance they once had.

I mean, the show has been around for so long it now has writers who grew up watching it. Think about that.

It's very similar (most likely an intended homage) to the origin of Christopher Lloyd's character on taxi.

He wasn't an adult, but yeah. Homer got him to start drinking in high school.

[–]Akdag 4 points5 points ago

Also, he sobered up long enough to learn to fly a chopper and train to be an astronaut until homer got him drunk so he could take the astronaut gig.

[–]rockytheboxer 59 points60 points ago

Homer didn't get him drunk, the Nasa astronauts offered him non-alcoholic champagne. Get your facts straight, rook.

[–]Buttery_LLAMA 0 points1 point ago

[–]Akdag 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No need to call me names. I was throwing out my recalled information. It was clearly not recalled correctly. At least I tried to make a post without posting a query to the Gods of google first.

edit: I do appreciate the accuracy correction!

[–]rockytheboxer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Aww man, no offense meant. Rook is short for rookie, I meant it playfully. Think of it accompanied by a jovial pat on the shoulder.

[–]Niagakool 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In addition to what Rocky said about the Nasa episode, him sobering up and learning to fly a chopper is from a different episode. In the episode he's saving Bart and Lisa from a wildfire and wants to drink to calm his nerves. But Homer takes the beers and chugs them and doesn't let Barney drink. Barney says "you took 6 silver bullets for me"... blah blah blah.

[–]Akdag 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the recap. It has been a while since I've seen those epic episodes.

[–]Chickabeeinthewind[!] 33 points34 points ago

The characters all looked a little alike on this show. Homer was just Crusty without makeup and hair.

[–]Fishermichaels 9 points10 points ago

Krusty was originally going to be homer trying to trick Bart into loving him. The writers abandoned that plot line early on.
