"Raining cats and dogs" comes from the fact that during the medieval period of europe, cats and dogs would sometimes find themselves on top of houses and stay there, then when it would suddenly pour rain, they would jump off the roof. Often they would walk up to townsfolk to tell them that they should know I read this fact in a children's magazine in the waiting room of the pediatrician's office when I was nine and have no idea if it's true.

This is very much true. You have a better chance of saving a pet if you adopt it from a shelter than you do if you see it thrown out a car window. While it might not be free* you're still saving a life.

*- not sure myself, my only dog was rescued from a dumpster by my next door neighbor, who got him his shots and a flea bath and then asked us if we wanted him.

Where I live in the US (and where I used to live one state over, this isn't region-specific I suppose) is not unusual at all to find stray kittens. My neighbor found their kitten in the parking lot of a bar they were leaving. She was strolling around under cars. I worked in a bar where last summer a momma cat decided to have a littler of kittens in the beer garden/smoking area. We named her Smoky and when her kittens were big enough they would come out and snuggle with drunk people until they were adopted. The US has an epidemic of irresponsible pet owners who get a cat, don't fix it and abandon it or let it run around fucking.

Edit; I can honestly think of three other examples from the last year but don't want to write a novel on kitten rescues in the US right now.

I've seen multiple instances of motorists tossing animals out the window. Unfortunately, most of them were already dead by the time we pulled over, or we were unable to find them. I've only seen one that was visibly alive and (mostly) unharmed, a cat, and when I tried to get it to safety, it squeezed under a fence and took off. It's scary how common it is, but I've only ever seen it happen when I was on a road trip.

My dad always had cats he'd let run around getting it on, but he never abandoned any of them, he made sure they were adopted by a friend and kept one or two.

I used to live at the end of a long, somewhat industrial street by an airport. I saw people come to the end of the road and toss out kitties/puppies/dogs/cats on a weekly basis for the entire two years I lived there.

Some I was able to save, some not. The local coyotes/strays knew it was a good place to hunt. :(

If this was regular, i would have set up a camera recording incoming vehicles at a great spot to capture all this.

Then i would have barricaded the street off after they tried to leave, with my prepared street baricader deluxe 1000.

Called the relevant authorities.

Patted self on back for job well done.

What kind of person could sit through that for 2 years? I realise your not directly responsible, but im sure you could have done something, you have previously been in a position where you could actually bring some of these cruel/heartless/moronic etc persons in for justice, and you turned the other way.

This is nothing. My cat had been carved into very thin slices and vacuum-packed as luncheon meat. All I can say is, good thing I went to the deli that day, instead of some dog-lover. Now he's fine. I have before and after pictures around here somewhere.
