Matilda? Childhood favorite

[–]sandwichbastard 80 points81 points ago

Directed by Danny DeVito.

[–]Themiffins 57 points58 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know DeVito starred and narrated the movie, but I did not know he actually directed it.

[–]apostrotastrophe 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love how he narrates it neutrally, and plays the character so angrily. It's just like being read a story and having your parent do the voices.

[–]suo 40 points41 points ago

He also produced Gattaca. I found that suprising.

[–]fingle85 27 points28 points ago

[–]sandwichbastard 0 points1 point ago*

I think Wikipedia's wrong on DeVito and Pulp Fiction. It was produced by Lawrence Bender

EDIT: Nevermind, I apologize.

[–]Moosebomber 2 points3 points ago

His name pops up on Pulp Fictions opening credits.

[–]skaijo 0 points1 point ago

Gee whiz. AND he's killing it on It's Always Sunny. DeVito is the man.

[–]fingle85 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Lawrence was a producer on it, but he took it to DeVito's company at the time to set Pulp Fiction at a studio. For those of you who don't work in the movie biz, there are many different kind of producers and each of them are important. DeVito may not have had as much creative input as Bender, but he certainly played a serious role in getting the film made.

If I remember correctly she comments that she made it with her own "blood and sweat" before the kid was forced to eat it. As a child I took this completely literally. Freaked me right the fuck out.

Unless that was the intent?

It WAS. I came here to say the same exact thing. Nothing was better than mentally imagining the hair dye switch, or the hat glue incident, or the Bruce Bogrotter assembly. Roald Dahl had a real gift for description, don't you think?

[–]HunterGirl 1 point2 points ago

Came here to say that. Roald Dahl wrote the most amazing books I ever read in my childhood. I also attribute my love of reading books to him, and on occasion just for the fun of it I will sit down and re-read all those books from my childhood over and over again.

My sister used to come home from school, and watch it every single day. Literally. And on weekends? ALL DAY. It was her time to watch TV after school till 6pm or whatever, so everyday after school she would put that on, and you had no choice but to watch it, or go find something else to do because it was her time.

And on weekends, she would stay in and watch it because she only had her older brothers to play with. So I remember this movie and absolutely hated it back then, seeing it each and every flipping day for months. But....eh, I like it now :D

[–]PrettyLilVaginaFace 1 point2 points ago

that fucking chokey was pure evil...and also horrifying when I saw this as a child.

Why doesn't anybody tell their parents!?

[–]mmm27 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, man that was terrible. My cousins and I used to hang out in our basement when we were little. I was the youngest of all, and my oldest cousin would poke fun and say he was going to put me in this little closet thing that he said was the chokey.

Now, when I was 8, when this happened, I never even saw the movie Matilda, but the name for that awfully dusty, nailed up, death trap just freaked me out. And when I did see the movie, I looked at the chokey, and thought back to that old spikey closet in the basement. My cousin was evil...pure frikkin' evil.

[–]magnusarcanum 0 points1 point ago

They've just turned it into a musical, with music by Tim Minchin. Opened in London a few weeks ago I think.

Yep. I went to see it on Wednesday.

It was amazing (and included the scene posted by op). You could hear Minchin in every song. The kids were superb. Would seriously recommend it.

I learned how to play Send Me on My way by Rusted Root because of this movie and that song.

Posting because I remember.

Shit, I could probably list almost every scene in order and I haven't seen it in over 10 years (approx). I have seen it like 10 times though, loved that movie as a kid.

Couldn't watch the scene where they were hiding in Trunchbull's house. Had to turn around in my seat. Of course, after I read the book, the whole movie was a cinch.

I know if I would gain telekinetic powers I would end up exploding people's heads like Tetsuo from Akira.

[–]Comoros7 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thing that ruined the film was that Matilda kept her powers in the end. That doesn't happen in the book - she loses her powers because there's nothing to be anrgy about anymore.

We would watch Matilda in elementary school every time we had a birthday party or a free day. I think I've watched it over 20 times now and its just as good every time.

When I see post like these asking if I remember Matilda, I immediatley feel old. I forget that half of reddit was born in the 90's.

It was on TV recently, and as a 20 year old. I happily stopped what I was doing and watched the entire thing.

Used to have it on VHS, can't find it now :(

This is my absolute favourite film. I aspire to be like Miss Honey. The taglines of the film are also pretty damn memorable. "A little magic goes a long way" and "Somewhere inside all of us is the power to change the world."

[–]Toezap 0 points1 point ago

Wow, just read that the mother of the girl who played Matilda died from breast cancer during filming of the movie. That's pretty intense that she was able to keep going and do such a great job.

Agghhh I just bought this movie yesterday for 5 bucks at Target! Shit yeah I love this movie.

Also, this movie was my first introduction to Send Me On My Way - Rusted Root which was the song my now-husband and I had our grand exit to at our wedding this past weekend. :D

My uncle's an illustrator, and this movie actually features one of his drawings - when she's reading Moby Dick, it's open to his picture. We all got so excited when we saw it, and then Danny DeVito ripped it to shreds.
