one of the biggest transitions between gameplay I have ever experienced was the transition from the first game to the second

I picked up Jak and Daxter 2, and as much as I loved and played Jak and Daxter, I could not get into it. Never picked up any of the other Jak and Daxter games. :/

[–]zwaldowski 46 points47 points ago

Force yourself through it. It starts out and you're like, "This is different, it sucks" but it is a fantastic fantastic game once you let it grow its beard, so to speak.

[–]HyeR 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea when its first started I was like "wow stupid dark super powers, this is all they got?", then you get introduced to the story and you get hooked. What was cool about that game was though it was linear in story, it was kind of an open worldy kind of atmosphere. I remember you could hijack the hover cars, those were fun to mess around in.

Anyway, fun ass game.

[–]Chevron 4 points5 points ago

When my friend figured out how to fly for real in Jak 3 the game instantly transformed into an exploitaganza where we tried flying over everything. Such great games.

[–]TheCodexx 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jak II is a good game on its own. Better than Jak III anyways.

But Jak and Daxter was an old-school platformers with collectable items and a rich world that wasn't technologically advanced but still had some cool stuff.

Would a proper sequel have been nice? Sure. But I perhaps Naughty Dog was tired of traditional platforming with silent protagonists and would have simply made a bad game. Jak II isn't so great as a sequel. It's a total non-sequiteur in a lot of ways. But they made a good game that was fun to play from start to finish.

[–]CyanideCloud 8 points9 points ago

Personally, I liked the leap from actiony-platformer to a more of an action-shooter type game. Fuck, I love everything about all of the Jak and Daxter games.

I played the Daxter PSP game. It was okay.

[–]ashraf2403 12 points13 points ago

Jak 2 was probably one of the greatest sequels to a game you can get. Most sequels feel like the original with a few added features, not with Jak 2 it felt like a brand new game.

[–]Griffith 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. While it was a departure from the previous game's gameplay, it was better in every single way, it couldn't have been more.

Jax 3, in comparison, was worse. Not a worse game, but worse in terms of evolution.

[–]mr_rogers_neighbor 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was so unfortunate. Felt like it was trying to copy Ratchet and Clank...

[–]bearze 68 points69 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Personally, I loved Jak 2. Jak and Daxter was great, first real adventure I got as a kid. Then I saw a full page advertisement for Jak 2 in a magazine... I was so happy. Got my grandmother to pre-order it too! When I started playing it, I LOVED it.

Jak 3 was phenomenal as well imo

[–]Dr_Fix 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yes, yes it was. though it was a little heavy on the vehicles at times.

[–]CoriJane 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't really feel that way, mostly because I had never played Ratchet and Clank before that...

Anyways, the shooting was way different from RC, aiming was pretty hard. Still one of my most favorite games though.

[–]MagnusThunder 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just jump and spin mashing while shoot button, it auto targets for you.

[–]CoriJane 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did that, and the Reflex Blaster in Jak 3 basically broke the game's combat if you did this.

[–]Mynci 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, the one with the bouncing bullets could totally clear a room in seconds. It was unstoppable.

[–]CoriJane 10 points11 points ago

Once you got into hero mode, that game was a joke.

[–]joedude 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

once you got infinite dark jak the game was a joke.

[–]CoriJane 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depends on your playstyle. But yeah, I kinda missed how Jak II hero mode was still actually challenging (I mean I still haven't beaten that one turret section where you're trying to shoot down the eco tanker).

[–]ElektronicBlakcMess 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I will be Giant Dark Jak forever! Feel my might rabbit people!

[–]binary 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I liked it, mainly because I thought that it made sense for the maturity of the world to progress (i.e., the protagonists are changed by the events of the first game). This is challenged after subsequent games, and I'm likely to agree that the change was probably more development driven ("Let's do a Ratchet and Clank style game!") than story driven. But I want to believe.

[–]Bored_At_Night 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jak and Daxter was closer to the Ratchet and Clank series than Jak II. The original Jak and Daxter was Ratchet and Clank sans guns, and with a fluent world.

[–]Bored_At_Night 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was closer to GTA than Ratchet and Clank. Jak II and Jak III had no platforming element (Unlike the original Jak and Daxter), which is the prevalent style of Ratchet and Clank. Sure, they added guns to Jak II, but they also changed over to mission-based progression in an open world with a police system. Cartoon GTA.

[–]leonhart623 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm gonna take umbrage with the whole platforming thing. Jak II had plenty of platforming. It was balanced with shooting, racing, etc... but there was plenty of platforming there to be had. Jak 3, though, that game had like 6 platforms total.

[–]Bored_At_Night 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jak II has a little bit of platforming element while indoors, but the vast majority of the game you are in the city and it is non-existent. They even introduce flying vehicles to make it that much more insignificant.

[–]bearze 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

lol wanna know what was non-existent?

If you clicked the left stick down you could make yourself go flat against the wall. I never used it, feature didn't help at all when trying to outrun the guards!

I do as well, ah the memories. The other two games that I have of the series are JakX Combat Racing and Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier. JakX was OK (I had fun with it back in the day) and the lost frontier wasn't developed by naughty dog (Impact Games). I played through it in about a day or two and it was really unsatisfying.

More of a HD port then a remake.

[–]Sansarasa 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, most of these re-release of games on the PS3 are just ports with some enhancements, like new textures and eyecandy effects.

Remakes are things like Resident Evil 1 for the GC, Final Fantasy 3 and 4 for the DS, etc. As the word implies, they literally remade the game from scratch.

[–]Storminormin 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I really enjoyed it. It was one of my favorite racing games besides games that were built as racing games.

[–]ColHunterGathers 2 points3 points ago

I told my cousin i got it, and i said it was kind of like Mario Kart, but more violent. His response was "How can it be more violent than turtle shells and bananas!?"

[–]Ikarus3426 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I bought it too! Mostly because I was desperate for another Jak and Daxter game. It was fun and I enjoyed it, but this was around the time my PS2 finally died. It kept freezing, I didn't know if it was because it was buggy or my PS2 was on its last leg.

[–]Insert 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I loved how they continued the story and concluded it through the racing spin-off. So excellent.

[–]Exaltt 42 points43 points ago

I would like to thank Naughty Dog for the three amazing trilogies they created. Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, and Uncharted.

[–]versusgorilla 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Think about this: Crash had Crash Team Racing. Jak and Daxter had Jak X. Uncharted now has a trilogy... Uncharted racing game next?

C'mon Naughty Dog, you have a track record here!

[–]Sunflower_Fortunado 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They jokingly call it Uncarted, I don't know if they know that we genuinely kinda want it.

[–]rubelmj 0 points1 point ago

It'll be perfect. Sully can throw a cigar smoke screen, Lazarevic can throw grenades, etc.

[–]Jack_Squire 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I could actually see that game kinda working. Rather than racing to a finish line, you are racing to the entrance of a temple/cave/whatever that holds a treasure.

[–]CoriJane 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't even wait for what they're gonna cook up for the PS4.

[–]UncookedGnome 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Too bad that they can only seem to make one good series for every console generation.

[–]CoriJane 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know, it always pissed me off how Insomniac was able to keep up the Ratchet & Clank games on top of Resistance, yet Naughty Dog could only do Uncharted.

[–]UncookedGnome 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll take R&C over Resistance any day. At the same time. I think Jak and Daxter benefited from just being the three main games. Others have pointed out that The Lost Frontier was a joke.

[–]CoriJane 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do think that was because it was made by a different company with the PSP as the target platform. Had Naughty Dog handled it I think it would have been much better.

[–]UncookedGnome 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I know that. It just depresses me.

[–]cupids_hitman 0 points1 point ago

I've logged 25 hours on Skyrim this week, have played and loved so many games since that fateful Christmas when I was in my early teens, but...

That will always be my favorite game.

[–]SirBraneDamuj 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I WISH I COULD UPVOTE YOU MORE

FUCK YES. Jak and Daxter remains the defining game that made me go from "yeah I play video games sometimes" to...well...what I am today.

To say that I am in love with this series (for Naughty Dog's run, anyway) is more of an understatement than saying Krew enjoys dessert.

Jak and Daxter will always remain in my heart as the pinnacle of my youth. When I have a child old enough to play video games, Jak and Daxter will be near the top of the list of games that I will give him/her to play.

As a reward for being such an awesome person and sharing some level of understanding of why this game is so amazing, here is an album containing gifs of all of the Power Cell dances. Enjoy!

Alright, looks like you were as obsessed with the game as I was.

Did you beat the game 100%, finding every single orb and egg and cell and everything in the game, to open the huge door? MOST DISAPPOINTING UNLOCKABLE ENDING EVER.

[–]OsterGuard 2 points3 points ago

This was during the heyday of 3D platformers. Between the awkward "HOW DO YOU MOVE IN 3D" time of the PSX/N64 and the "LOL LET'S SHOOT STUFF" times of the present day.

Sly, Ratchet, Jak, etc. I MISS THESE GAMES.

[–]tomstockmail 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We still have Ratchet games. All 4 One just came out. It's quite a bit different, but there were two other releases this gen and a downloadable game that lasts for a few hours.

[–]shadowthiefo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is All 4 one actually good, though? I don't trust multiplayer Ratchet games anymore since Gladiator, which was horrible IMO.

[–]tomstockmail 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well Tools of Destruction, the short but part of the story Quest for Booty and A Crack in Time followed the traditional storyline platformer. So if you liked the first 3 games you should like those three. All 4 One follows a Brawl-like camera in that it's a 4 player co-op and all have to be on the screen. Still Ratchet and Clank, but the camera angle changes it a lot. It's more like the Gladiator game which I think was called Deadlock as far as the storyline goes.

[–]shadowthiefo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

PAL region here, so it was called Gladiator for me. And if it's like that, I won't be getting it. I love the the series to death, but I realllly hated deadlocked.

They killed the market with oversaturation and shite like Ky, Vexx, Pac-Man worlds, Haven, Tak, Kau, Malice, Pitfall and poor Spyro, Crash and Sonic sequels.

Also numerous poor 3D platformer franchise games like Shrek, Taz Wanted, Woody Wood Pecker, Scooby Doo, Madagascar, Wallace & Grommit, Futurama, Piglet, Winnie the Pooh, Bionicle, Jimmy Neutron, I could go on forvever.

You are the reason we can't have nice things today.

Theirs no actually quote of them saying they are done with it but after the creators of Naughty Dog left the team, they decided to created a more realistic type of game. Thus the Uncharted series was made.

[–]resqual 0 points1 point ago

I think everyone is. Has Naughty Dog ever published a bad game? They seem like the Jerry Bruckheimer of video games. Anything they make simply turns to gold. Mine was Jak 2. I was about 7 or so, and my Aunt and Uncle came over for christmas eve. I was allowed to open one present, so me and my brother opened the presents our Aunt and Uncle got us. It was Kingdom Hearts and Jak 2. They told me "now you have your own games you can play when you go to your Nana's house." (she had a PS2) We were both pretty thrilled, and then they said, "do you want to go to your Nana's to get her PS2?" We both obliged, and when we got in the car, we found a much lager present awaiting us. It was a PS2. A fucking PS2. I've never been happier in my life.

many years later was the first time i was wow'ed by the shift in night and day with world of warcraft, but which i have since stopped playing.

and with elder scrolls oblivion for the night sky. simply stunning.

if your looking for an awesome action/platformer, get rayman origins! it's absolutely incredible and will hold you over until the HD remakes.

I enjoyed the open world aspect of Jak II more than the "levels" in RC. RC also reminded me of Jak because of the similar gameplay and the wisecracking miniature companion.

Apparently Naughty Dog are making a HD collection for Jak & Daxter and it will come out in 2012.

Aren't Naughty Dog working on a HD remake of Jak & Daxter 1, 2 and 3?

I've played every single game in the series minus The Lost Frontier (since I've heard a lot of bad things about that one).

Love ALL OF THEM. My favourite was either Jak 3 or Daxter though (doesn't look like much of reddit shares this opinion D:).

However I definitively put most of my hours into Jak X since multiplayer mode was pretty badass.

fucking really! this is the only one in the series that I liked, played the entire thing at a friends house and got every single orb, even the extra one! great game, and almost no load times. what happened to that!?

What about the secret Power Cell outside Spider Cave. That one was such a bitch to get.

[–]chunkymonkeychow 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

that one was great you had to do everything perfectly to make it from all the way down in spider cave and then only have one shot to hit it

[–]thelaundrymatt[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? It took me a good ten times until I was able to get out of the cave with enough Eco. And even then it took a while to shoot it.

I don't remember that one, I know I had the max amount though, 101 or 102, I checked gamefaqs after I was done playing to see what I had missed and it was like "you're good bro.."

I never got into Jak and Daxter, I was always about the Ratchet and Clank though.

[–]2-ScoopIceCream 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was pretty disappointed as Ratchet and Clank kinda took over the Playstation scene and J&D games stopped getting made for anything but the PSP.

I should really give R&C a chance though! They look fun.

Same here! I 100% the first 3 games. Accomplishment of my childhood. I don't know what happened to arsenal and whatnot though. Couldn't get into it for some reason. Not even on PS3, though I hear they were good.

I find it really hard to find good fun platformers now. They are all aimed for little kids, or I can beat them stupid quick. I want to play Spyro (circa PSX) and the original Crash and Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank.

I picked up a ps2 last summer and blazed through this baby. Great game. I got about halfway through the second one and got pissed off cause I couldn't get through the damn walkway mission where the bastards just keep coming and if you fall into the water, you get blasted by the damned bot. I really wanted to play the third but I didn't want to until I finished the second.

I may have to pick it up again, now.

I feel like this series marked the death of the open world platformer. I liked the orignal game, but in the second you have this huge city with nothing to do in it. Everything in the game is a mission, which I felt killed the sense of freedom you'd otherwise have.

I played the hell out of this game, but oddly enough I never even considered playing any of the other games in the series. I guess was too busy with ratchet and clank.

LOVED this game. I beat it 100%, finding every single hidden item and orb, to unlock the huge, mysterious door that everyone oggled at. I want give it away, except to say that it is THE MOST DISAPPOINTING UNLOCKABLE ENDING EVER. Still awesome though. I was always mad that Ratchet and Clank sorta took over the Playstation.

Also, I named my dog Daxter.

Holy Shit! Every time I meet a fellow gamer and end up hanging out with them a lot, conversation eventually leads to these games. I rave about Jak and Daxter. Perhaps it's because I was 8 or 9 when I played Jak and Daxter, but I absolutely loved these games. I remember the announcement for Jak II and I was very skeptical about the shift. However, it ended up being AWESOME! I've wanted Naughty Dog to create a new Jak game for years now. Some other company did end up creating a Jak and Daxter game but I never played it. I'm pretty certain the reviews I read said it sucked.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Jak and Daxter 2 is one of the greatest sequels ever put out by Naughty Dog. The guns, the dark powers, the plot, the varied gameplay experiences that it offered... Everything put the game a good 10 steps ahead of the original, and I love it when game developers try and experiment with franchises. In this case, it paid off hugely. It's a shame that Jak 3 didn't keep up the momentum.

To start - I love the Jak and Daxter series. Played them all, even Combat Racing.

But to anyone else, did the original seem like a carbon copy of Mario 64? You go to hub area with 5 sub areas. In each sub area, there are 6 magical items to collect. You also get a magical item for collecting coins. Red coins = scout flies. Power Caps = Eco Colors.

The Jak II was stunningly similar to the GTA games. and Combat Racing was essentially Mario Kart with different skins.

Not to say this is bad. Just interesting.
