Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Judging by the penny-farthing, I'm guessing it's from around 1880.

He has been there forever. I remember stopping him when I was canvassing one summer in high school. He was nice at first...and then not. Just what you would expect from a man riding such a bicycle.

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, one time I asked him where he bought his bike and he told me, and I quote:

"Why don't you just go to Walmart and buy a fucking $50 bike, and leave high quality bikes like this for the upper crust"

So I told him politely to fuck off, and away he went wobbling on his bike like an idiot.

Yeah, he's probably around 50 or so. He's been tooling around on that bike for years. My fondest memory of him is when he inverted the bike so that the small wheel was in the front and big wheel was in the back. He was riding around looking all smug and then he scrubbed on a gravel path in front of PALY high. There were many lolz.

They are fun to ride, but wildly inefficient.

[–]blackredfellow 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would imagine. When you come to a stop, you dont have room to put your feet down to balance. Do you have to jump down every time you need to stop? I guess you could try to get near a lamp post and hold yourself up with your arm. Inefficient, yes.

[–]straitodenim 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah that makes it tough, and they're pretty hard to track stand, but not impossible. But getting back on isn't really hard once you get used to it. The hardest part about riding them is that the wheel wants to turn towards the foot that has just passed the very top of the arc, so you've got to sort of sway a little as you ride.

[–]Bacon_Donut 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

so you've got to sort of sway a little as you ride.

That, combined with the stop/start, makes anyone who rides one of these in a city worthy of respect, hipster or not. What do you do at lights? lean on the nearest car roof I guess?

[–]FartSnob 9 points10 points ago

That penny-farthing looks like it's fairly modern. All of the components look fairly up to date. Do they still make these bikes?

[–]billyfalconer 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure. http://www.hiwheel.com/

I've gotta say, I own six bikes, one of which is a fixed gear, and the high wheeler is about the only bike that's less appropriate for city riding than a fixie.

[–]FartSnob 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I like the stripped down look of some of the fixie bikes I see around. I'm thinking about starting to bike to work and thought a fixed gear would be great for this. What would you recommend for an under 5 mi. commuter bike?

[–]cinderella_story 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fixed gears are horrible commuter bikes. They are impractical as all hell if you've got a lot to carry or have a hilly commute. They make cool 'stripped down' geared commuter bikes with internal hubs that you can put a rack on. Like this for example. Not to mention fixies are bike thief magnets whereas a commuter-specific bike is more likely to be passed over.

But if you still prefer aesthetics over practicality at least put a brake on the damn thing.

[–]swilly 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you live somewhere flat, fixies can be fun commuter bikes. I bought one just for that purpose one summer & had a 14 mile round trip commute. That was the best shape I've ever been in - especially considering I had to stop with my legs. Anything more than that would have been a stretch on a fixie though.

It wasn't bad with a backpack w/change of clothes either.

[–]cinderella_story 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know people who've ridden over 500 miles on fixies. It's not the distance that would make riding a fixed gear impractical for commuting. I personally commuted on a bike with 24 gears because I had a lot of shit to carry and believe me, I was glad I had that granny gear on hills with 2 fully loaded panniers.

IMHO, I just don't see the point of a fixed gear beyond the velodrome. You're just making more unnecessary work for yourself in an effort to 'look cool'. But to each their own, I guess.

[–]bedake 9 points10 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was given by an older brother my bike. I rode for a year on a 10 speed road bike through 4 seasons. Bike fell apart, I rebuilt it as a fixed gear and I absolutely love it. I live in a city with minimal amounts of hills and everything I carry is limited to what fits inside a backpack.

That year I rode the 10 speed I NEVER had to shift gears, my thinking was this: I am riding in snow, rain and salted roads, geared bikes are a bitch to maintain, they have lots of parts that can fail and need kept in check. I don't shift, so those extra gears were worthless to me anyways, my 80s steel frame was already very heavy, the extra components were just dead weight.

SO: I converted to fixed gear, it was a cheap way to get my decaying winter rust bucket back in shape. MINIMAL parts means MINIMAL effort to keep in prime condition. Now my bike is lighter and more efficient with less parts to worry about.

Also, it is fun as fuck I feel more in-tune with the machine, I know exactly what is going on with the mechanics and can feel the machine itself. So please don't knock these bikes, just because they don't work for you doesn't mean people lack valid reasons for them and just to set your mind at ease, I have a very modest build, not flashy at all so don't piss your pants about me looking cool.

I am not about to suggest one bike of another, I dont know shit about bikes, and to be honest I kind of hate people that are into bikes and bike culture. All I see are a bunch of asshole elitists with holier than thou attitudes from both the fixed and non fixed crowds. Seems to me this kind of attitude can push more people away from considering bikes as a viable form of transportation and that makes me sad. The one thing building a bike taught me is that if you give the slightest hint of actually finding enjoyment in your bike then you become the target of ridicule.

tl;dr fuck over opinionated bike snobs.

[–]swilly 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Where I was commuting was completely flat & I had very little to carry. I welcomed the extra effort :)

[–]xCruise 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While not as practical as a specific commuter bike, fixed gears are not impractical. In fact, some ride them because they are so practical. Very few things to maintain, lightweight, and cheap. And who says you can't put racks, panniers, and fenders on a fixed gear? For a less than 5mi commute I don't think there is anything wrong with a fixed gear.

[–]rechlin 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wouldn't exactly consider freewheels to be unreliable. A single-speed generally makes more sense than a fixed gear bike, and it is barely any more complicated.

[–]xCruise 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. I just don't think it is correct to say fixed gears are horrible commuters or impractical as hell.

[–]cinderella_story 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, less than 5 mile commute that is all flat. Have fun with a heavy pannier going up a hill on a fixed gear.

[–]xCruise 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Like I said, if you don't have a lot to carry then they are great. If you have a 50" gear then it's not bad at all anyway, although that'd be stupid.

[–]xCruise 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most likely you'll want a commuter bike as stated below. Don't spend less than $300-$400 though. Anything less (unless it's used) will be too unreliable as a primary means of transport. If you don't need to carry much, and don't need to wear nice clothes, then a fixed gear is a more fun option.

The evolution of repost titles:

Note the positive karma effect of "fuck" in title (but not wussy versions such as "effen'"), and the kiss of death that is self-post. Interestingly, simplicity (The hipster) seems to be well-received as well.

The funny thing is everyone in my family wears flannel because most of my family is farmers or use to be a farmer like myself and I didn't even know American Spirits were a hipster thing until years after I had been buying them from an Indian Casino store.

By the popular definitions of being a hipster my grandpa is a hipster because he wears flannel, wears glasses, hand rolls his cigarettes, and listens to music no one has heard of.

OMG THATS NOT A NORMAL BIKE. WHAT A FUCKIN HIPSTER. DOING SOMETHING NOT NORMAL.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doing something not normal to look hip...Penny-farlings are not efficient modes of transportation, nor are they as easy to find as bikes.

[–]Capsss 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does look kind of fun though. Sometimes people do things because they're fun.

[–]AngryData 3 points4 points ago

Neither are unicycles and I wouldn't call this guy a hipster.

[–]Def-Star 11 points12 points ago

[–]Newshoe 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

pfft....There's a modern up-to-safety-code bike helmet....That hipster needs a flat cap or a top hat (with monocle preferably) to make the transformation complete

[–]teawar 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This looks like the Mac Store in Palo Alto. There's a really cool guy I know who rides a penny farthing around there. Not a hipster either; just a cool old guy (i.e. what all hipsters aspire to be).

[–]Ultra99 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I like to define hipster-ism as an instance in which one makes choices that deliberately favor (supposedly ironic) eccentricity at the cost of utility.

Perfect case in point here.

Why the heck would somebody want to buy a bike that is huge, slow and probably handles like crap when you can pick up bikes with a sprung front fork for cheap that will cover huge distances with ease?

This is in contrast to a case where someone buys a Mac for the brand image, simply because one could easily put forward a semi rational counter argument in favor of the Mac for its utility, build quality and durability.

Exemption clause: maybe it really is a genuine 100 year old classic and not a replica, in which case I giveth the nerd credz.

[–]Woolio 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, they handle very well. The big wheel acts as a shock dampener, so you can barely feel the street beneath you. Hit a rock? In a standard street bike, you'd lose a bit of balance. With a penny-farthing, however, you just keep on going. Never skip a beat.

They're also fairly fast. You can fully extend your legs, allowing for more power (and, thus, more speed) per rotation. I've seen them get up to 60mph with little effort.

And, on top of that, it just looks cool. It's something you don't see every day, like an organ grinder with a pet monkey. What I want to know is when liking history became a bad thing.

after having worked at an apple store for a year, I can say there are no more hipsters in it than the city in which its located. Most of my coworkers were fanboy nerds

[–]Woolio 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say the Penny-Farthing is more or less a unique trinket rather than a trademark of hipsterdom. Don't judge before you ride one.

Besides, everyone knows hipsters ride unicycles. Two-wheeled transportation is too conventional for them.

[–]CoreyMatthews 0 points1 point ago

How to ignore 100 years of bicycle development so you can feel special.

That said seeing pennies always makes me think of Mulga Bill's Bicycle - the illustrated version.
