Heh, try that in the higher level engineering courses, you'll be like this during finals.

I'm in engineering, and we have some mandatory non-engineering classes, such as management. I literally said that out loud. I understood maybe 2 out of 5 words.

[–]jsantos17 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? All class but my engineering classes are easy as hell. Sometimes you need to memorize a bunch of stuff, but nothing major really.

[–]RedAero 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suck at memorizing. I mean completely and utterly useless at it. Also, it's hard when you literally don't know what the words mean.

with engineering you can always fall back on math. "Damn, i have no idea what this is, but i can make this number do things with this number and partial credit yessss"

with non-engineering if you have no idea what this is you're pretty much just boned

Been there, done that.

Still cram because professors LOVE to cram you with projects along with the finals at the same time.

Oh man I changed my major and am in a 100 level class geared towards freshmen. It is great. Everyone complains about how hard it is but really if you know about this thing called time management it is a cake walk.

Is a 3.1 low for college?

[–]dogebial 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd consider it average if not just a little over average. I consider 3.5 and above to be above average and 2.7 and below to be poor.

[–]rmm45177 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

aww... I'm still in high school and I've only got a 2.7... There is no way I could make it if I went to college :(

[–]dogebial 1 point2 points ago

What year are you. I was a 2.6 until the second semester of my sophmore year. i began giving a shit and made 3.8+ every semester after that. Highest I got was the last semester of my senior year 4.2. I graduated with a 3.3 Just work your ass off and the reward will be great. Nothing feels better than being granted scholarships even if you only get one or two.

Eh I had a 2.8 out of high school, went to a community college for two years had a 3.8 transferring gpa now I'm at a good school to finish my 4 year. You'll be fine if you are willing to work hard.

[–]dogebial 0 points1 point ago

Bust your ass in community college for two years and then transfer. Thats what I had to do because I can't afford out of state tuition.

[–]FreeDirt 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure how it is in other countries, but I do wish in the US that it wasn't such a stigma that "IN ORDER TO GET A GOOD JOB YOU NEED TO GET A DEGREE NOW NOW NOW NOW NOWWWW."

We need people to go into the technical trade, as well...becoming welders, plumbers, electricians and whatnot. Do what interests you, not what you are forced to do or think you can make the most money at doing.

I wish my parents would've told me that.

[–]HentaiTentacleDemon[!] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People have been taught from a young age in this generation that trade jobs are the runner up prize for people not "good enough" to get a 4 year degree or attend university.

Which is going to be hilarious because tradesmen now demand better prices than doctors and lawyers due to there being so few of them capable of doing quality work because of low enrollment rates in the trades.

[–]elac 8 points9 points ago

[–]DirktheGerman 13 points14 points ago

Unless there's a cumulative test of what i should have learned during the job interview my degree should be as good as the next guys.

[–]Napppy -4 points-3 points ago

Yes, you may interview well and get the job. Then you have to keep it.

I used to watch fresh prince, its the eppisode when ashley gets drums cuz she hated violin. Then he hires Jazz as the teacher! Jazz was by far the most hilarious character

[–]Shaboz 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Either

a) You're not a science major or

b)You're one of those people who can completely understand everything through the lecture and comprehend.

If it's B... I swear to fucking God I will find you and eat your God damn brains to absorb your fucking mutant powers.

[–]Yotsubato 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a science major I barely read. I just do the problems and figure out how to do them on the go and use the book as a reference to parts I forgot from lecture. Now in humanities courses you actually need to read the book to do well.

[–]Shaboz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Man... total opposite for me. Brains.... need your delicious brraaaains.

[–]Yotsubato 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dunno man. Not being physically able to read sucks. Like if the info isn't interesting I cannot consume the information. It just goes thru my head. Hence why my humanities gpa is like 3.0

[–]AuraofMana 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

CS here, never read a single textbook. Too boring. Read example code and tutorials and coded instead. Better learning experience.

[–]scy1192 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm somewhat a b. If I can't understand it in lecture, no amount of studying will ever help me learn it, but luckily I understand most things in lecture...

[–]Shaboz 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here... except the word "most" should be replaced with "few".

[–]SungTongs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exact opposite here. Either I have severe ADD, or lecture just isn't my thing. I seriously learn nothing in lecture. Especially math classes. In my Calc classes I will sit through lecture having no idea what is going on. Soon as I get home and attempt to do the problems, I figure things out pretty quickly.

Hahaha its funny because our(assuming american) education system is broken.

[–]circuslives 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The American university system is pretty good actually; it's the K-12 that's abysmal. It's just that universities are becoming over-saturated with students like OP who don't give a fuck and treat it like a joke. Foreign exchange students love coming to the United States for a good reason--cos the education is world class.

[–]nyneve 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha, no they don't. They go because they think it's like American Pie.

I was just at a study abroad info session for my university and one of the guys who was presenting spoke about his trip to the US. It was all party and easy grades, and he went to one of the top public schools in the country. Everyone I spoke to about studying abroad in the US was primarily interested in the party life.

They don't go because they want a world class education. At least not here in the Netherlands.

[–]Yotsubato 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see a ton of Chinese students here at UCSB who came from china to study engineering and sciences. They all came here for the world class education and the opportunity to set foot in the US and work on their citizenships. Sure theres the 1 year foreign exchange students who come for the party here, but most people who go for the 4 year degree here are quality hard working students, who find the UC system world class. Which it is, at least in the sciences.

[–]CulturaProfetica 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well that's because the Netherlands also has very good education. As a foreign student I came because education in third world countries are usually abysmal if you don't go to a private institution and even then it sucks back home.

[–]circuslives 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's going to be some exceptions to be sure. And I don't doubt that there are disparities even among American universities. I did a quick Google search and it seems, at least superficially, that Dutch higher education isn't all too bad. I think in general the education in Western Europe is going to be comparable. But think about people from the disadvantaged parts of the world--there are a lot more countries that fit this mold than say the Euro-American mold. And I can say with ease that these people are probably coming to the States to learn, not just party.

which public school? Makes a big difference.

[–]Yotsubato 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are some public schools that are both party schools and high class institutions, UCSB is the best example of one. Judging a whole school by one population isnt right.

[–]bluechaka 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only for the engineering students is it really a high class institution. Everybody else is like: Reading? Nope.

[–]TrollKy 5 points6 points ago

That's what everyone tells themself. Then they carry over those habits into college because they see their friends going out and partying all the time. And we end up back at the OP.

I used to one of those people that half-assed shit. I'm a perfectionist and love learning but slacked off a lot throughout my education.

I always wanted to go back and relearn and restudy everything I missed.

I learned something since graduating. The real world is fucking hard and there really isn't boatloads of time to just read and learn willy-nilly.

Learn something in college while you still can.

[–]pretzelzetzel 0 points1 point ago

Good for you! You're wasting space. This is what's wrong with society, people: someone laughs about wasting their time and money (and, the amount depending on where you're from, the state's money as well) and we say "Ha ha ha! Upvote this hero!"

Don't be fucking complaining about a tanking economy any time soon, buddy.
