Until you realize this is probably the Thailand Tiger Temple, and see the pictures of the abbot from the same place pouring urine on the tiger's face to keep it in line while tourists line up for a day of continuous hold-tiger-down-with-chain-to-let-random-strangers-fondle-it-after-paying.

I'm sorry, I'm jaded and extremely skeptical while everyone seems to think it's all fun and games. Maybe this is a different place with the same uniform.

The only thing more disgusting than the animal abuse is the HDR.

Also, if you're ever in Thailand, don't visit these temples without first doing an extensive search. Don't ask the local tour operators or the hotel/guesthouse your staying in because they usually have deals made with particular temples.

Unfortunately, the monk in this photo has the same robes and staff as those in the link you provided. I had no idea such a place even existed. Thank you for informing me.

You're welcome. Sigh. I was kind of hoping you'd be like "preposterous! This is -happy ethical conservation-minded place- where they treat their tigers well and you can still pet them!"

Really, though, so many people find out after unknowingly supporting those places, and say "if I'd known, I never would have given them a cent." I'm hoping maybe I can let people know before they do, and maybe get them to support more ethical places.

[–]Achalemoipas 2 points3 points ago

"if I'd known, I never would have given them a cent."

That's always bullshit.

It's like people who still buy pets from pet shops. Unless you were living as a hermit in some remote location for the past 30 years, you know damn well where those animals come from and you know damn well there's millions of them on death row.

How do you not think a tiger tied to a chain for entertainment is a bad thing? It's bullshit. They just didn't care.

[–]Inquisitr 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Careful there. For the most part you're right but there are a few OK pet stores. You need to check like everything else in life.

[–]Achalemoipas -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What OK pet stores?

You mean the ones who encourage small breeders to breed more dogs when millions have to be killed each year?

[–]Inquisitr 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No I mean ones that take animals from shelters and try to give them away. They make money by selling you all the stuff to go with em, not by selling the animal.

[–]blue_gatorade 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As opposed to what? From a shelter?(Actually not sarcastic, but don't know how to phrase it that way.)

If the pets at the pet shop don't get bought, where do they go?

[–]Achalemoipas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The shelter.

And then the pet shop makes no money, which means the horrible puppy/cat/bird mill doesn't make money and closes.

[–]blue_gatorade 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh. Cool then!

I got my kitty on a shelter sponsored adoption day at the pet store. That benefits the shelter, not the pet store, right?

[–]itsgametime 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's correct. The only animals that the pet stores near my house sell are small rodents, birds and fish. They have cats there but they are all rescued cats that are there for adoption and are not handled directly by the pet store but by the rescue organization.

The pervading argument against buying a cat/dog instead of adopting them is that there are millions of perfectly good animals that end up being euthanized in shelters every year, meanwhile people continue to use breeders and pet stores to buy pets that have been bred specifically to be sold. Basically, there's a huge overpopulation problem of cats and dogs but instead of adopting them people buy ones from breeders/ stores that have bred them and created more babies.

Additionally, too many times the breeder can't sell all the babies, and either puts them down or takes them to the shelter. And because they're not making any money, their animals will be neglected due to lack of proper care and food etc. Many breeders want to breed Fido and Fifi but get in way over their head because they don't know what their doing.

SO MANY arguments against breeding cats and dogs. Some people will claim that they're healthier, happier or whatever. Absolute horseshit. All my family's animals have been rescued from shelters. They're are beautiful, happy, loving and healthy. The shelter gave them all their shots, were micro- chipped, and perfectly fine. We've had our adopted yellow lab for for 14 years, just adopted a new mutt 6 months ago, and are in the middle of the paperwork for a cat. All previous pets have been adopted as well.

Sorry for the long post. I have an extreme disdain for those who don't adopt and instead buy their cats/ dogs.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Passionate breeders are actually the source for the healthiest pets. It doesn't help with pet over population, true. Getting a pet from a shelter is noble. However getting a baby pet from a breeder will be the best source for a pet.

Pet shops mistreat their animals, and many animals don't make it out of there healthy, physically or mentally. Animals in the shelter are treated better, but many of them have gone through hard times and it does affect them.

[–]Achalemoipas 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Passionate breeders are the ones who promote breed-specific illnesses. Like hip displasya, for instance.

And every dog they produce causes another one to be euthanized. Breeding pets is completely unethical.

[–]itsgametime 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't know why you're getting down- voted because you're correct. As a result of all the in- breeding in the attempt to keep the pedigree "pure" and create purebred animals they've created all sorts of genetic problems.

[–]BigBadDog 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not necessarily true, especially with purebred dogs. There are many breeders out there that don't breed their animals to have good heath. They instead breed them to match the "breed standard" as much as possible, and this usually involves lots of inbreeding, ignoring behavioral issues, and breeding animals with health conditions just because they have the desired markings/shape. Not all breeders are like this of course, but you have to be careful.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't dealt with dog breeders, where I could see this being more common. I dealt with horse breeders, who dearly love their horses and take great care of them and how to breed them. Also cat breeders and rat breeders, and those were people breeding their own pets as a very expensive and rewarding hobby, and giving the extras to people who they feel can take care of them.

FYI: Thai Buddhist monks all wear the same orange robes.

I agree, this is so wrong...

[–]amanofwealthandtaste 17 points18 points ago

However, most of the claims in the internet, and the information in the report are the same (some think it looks like a deliberate 'sting'), and Care for the Wild was previously not very well known. According to the report Care for the Wild did not find any evidence of the tigers being drugged. After the report, many press turned up at the temple but they were not able to substantiate the claims. Articles that look like they are negative are reporting the publication of the report and are not based on further evidence. The Thai government also investigated the temple again (although they had done so previously) and said that the tigers were well looked after. The temple has also been now given an official permit to breed tigers. It is also possible for any visitor to view the tiger accommodation, including Tiger Island, which is nearly completed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_Temple#Critique

I've actually been there and seen the the conditions. I have a friend that volunteers there working with the vet. He claims that the tigers are healthy and well fed.

I'd say there are legitimate criticisms (namely that they're breeding to get as many tigers as possible with no regard for genetic diversity) but actual cruelty on the part of the temple is pretty far from a proven fact.

A friend of mine who's been to Kanchanaburi (the place where the Tiger Temple is at) told me that the animals are always drugged to make sure they're docile. Dunno if this is true but it sounds reasonably logical to me. In which case, this picture is the opposite of happy.

EDIT: Somebody beat me to it in the comments.

I went there for a while this year - and had a great chat to both a monk, and an Australian girl who worked there.

I ended up going out boozing later that night with the aussie girl, and had a very candid conversation about her job there (I'd heard rumours they mistreat the tigers). She was absolutely adamant that they don't mistreat, drug or abuse the tigers in any way.

I believed her.

[–]bigcitycrows 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did she say anything about the photographs or explain why they might have pictures of staff generally being idiots/assholes around/to the tigers?

I'm being serious here. If it's a legit place, I'd love to support it- but when you have visitors and former staff saying they aren't on the up-and-up, and photographic proof of staff (and monks) literally pulling tigers' tails, beating them with staffs, etc., it makes it very hard to trust them.

[–]Treontheroad 25 points26 points ago

I visited the thailand Tiger Temple last year, it was heartbreaking. The animals are clearly doped up to remain tolerant to the hordes of tourists coming through the gates daily.

[–]bigcitycrows 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Continue to tell people; those who have a dream of going there get extremely defensive about it sometimes, or even people who already went and want to show off their pictures, and they don't realize what's really going on.

[–]Treontheroad 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I have encountered both sides I am just as guilty because I went and have photos but have since researched the temple and I am pretty bummed out by it. I went with a tour group and many people in my group strongly encouraged them to discontinue that aspect of the trip.
