"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Kind of goes for the generated worlds as well ~ but EVE makes a good point, size doesn't really matter unless you do something with it.

A while back I tried calculating how long it would take to cross one system with no warp and I think it was something like 10-15 years.

[–]cezar 0 points1 point ago

I calculated that at warp in a frigate it would take about three days to go from one system to another.

The Far Cry 2 map was wrong. That's only one half the map. There's a south end of the map too that you spend the second half of the game in.

[–]walkerism 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not that large either. No way is it bigger than San Andreas, in fact I doubt it's any larger than Liberty City.

[–]dr_rainbow 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Far Cry 2 is a good example that just because a map is larger in a sandbox game doesn't mean it's better. That game was absolutely woeful.

[–]ExogenBreach 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Between the crappy story and annoying respawning checkpoint guards was seriously fantastic combat missions, a great stealth system and fantastic environmental destruction. The graphics are still incredible, especially on the consoles, and made the long drives through the jungle enjoyable even though there was way too much of it.

I seriously hope they keep what was great about Far Cry 2 for 3 instead of changing everything in a kneejerk reaction to 2's reception.

[–]ChiefGrizzly 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

... Yep, that pretty much sums up my entire relationship with Far Cry 2 and expectations for Far Cry 3. I felt like I was the only one of the people I know who played it who not only noticed all its glaring faults but also found that the good massively outwayed the bad.

[–]ExogenBreach 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It also had pretty great music, and the buddy system would be really cool if you could make the relationships deeper than just "I owe you a favour."

Oh yeah... the fire was pretty good too.

I wasn't into farcry 2 at first, but now that i gave it a chance more recently i did thoroughly enjoy taking out convoy's of weapons dealers with motors and rpg's.

[–]LatinLover69 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The respawning checkpoints and the super repetitive side missions gave it a very arcadey feel, and even though I played through the game, I left with a sour taste in my mouth. If FarCry 3 manages to implement variety with the side missions, and Co-Op, I would pay $100 for the game.

[–]Fartmatic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was put off buying it when it came out because of all that crap with people complaining about the respawning, but after finally playing it I didn't want it gone. Without it whole areas of the map would be empty after a couple of missions, and you know where they all are and can usually blast through them in a car easily enough anyway.

[–]truestatic 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which was a huge disappointment because the guns felt spectacular and the first aid animations were awesome and novel.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

Ubisoft did so much wrong and so much right with that game. I hope they get it together for the sequel.

[–]Kalahan6 2 points3 points ago

I hope so too. An great open world/sandbox FPS is more than welcome.

[–]notanotherpyr0 3 points4 points ago

I loved the guns jamming on you, and the fire physics were absolutely the best. Never before or since have I played a game with so much good and so much bad thrown together. Maybe KOTOR 2.

[–]mattymck 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i agree 10000% on this, the guns were absolutely SUPERB. the feeling of unlocking the more awesome guns at the end of the game was fantastic, albeit with some boring missions.

The first aid was awesome, and i felt awesome doing it. Got shot in the neck? go pull a bullet out of my leg!

[–]NiteShadeX2 4 points5 points ago*

Best were explosions.

Had one injury where there's a big piece of rebarb in my gut, just pull that shit out and bleed. Another injury had a huge shard of glass imbedded in your arm, most blood in an object removal. My favorite is still the one where he looks at his right hand and all his fingers are mangled to shit. Then proceeds to wrench them back into position.

Additionally, the WoW map only includes vanilla content (although it fairly cites the original release year) and doesn't include dungeons or battlegrounds.

[–]Eustis 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's wayyy fucking early here and I haven't started the old thinker yet. Which games are those?

I was hoping this would be an updated version for Skyrim, anyone know where that one would fall on this graphic?

[–]Dirty_Dingus_McGee 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Daggerfall, Minecraft, etc.

[–]Eustis 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh okay, I figured minecraft applied but I've never played Daggerfall so I didn't know about the landscape generation. Thanks!

[–]Yserbius 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For that matter, Arena also had a procedurally generated landscape. It was smaller than Daggerfall but larger than some of the others. Fuel should still be in, as the landscape is procedurally generated, but not random, so it still looks gorgeous despite the fact that the game sucks.

[–]robingo667 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Minecraft would be unfair anyway, its generated to be 8 times larger than the Earth.

[–]revolverzanbolt 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Skyrim is approximately the same size as Oblivion.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe it's a little smaller.

[–]Heatbeat 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not the size of the map, mate, it's how you use it.

[–]ofNoImportance 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In this case, it is about the size of the map.

[–]kwyjibohunter 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But it feels bigger... and that's what really matters

[–]shakin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think Skyrim feels small. Towns are deceptively close to each other and walking from one to the other usually doesn't take very long. Maybe the small map size is good because the map is dense with things to do, but it makes it feel less epic when I can walk from a frozen town to the grassy plains in 20 minutes or less.

[–]Connador 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seems realistic to me. Unless towns were warring against each other, why would they want to be really far away? It makes trading supplies harder.. human geography yo

If we assume the character runs 10 minutes a mile, that's still 2 miles. For a world without cars I feel that that's realistic.. but if anyone knows how fast the character actually runs that'd be helpful, heh.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Feels smaller to me so far :-/ Personal perspective I suppose. I think it's a much better world, which might be why Oblivion felt bigger. Oblivion just had endless forests with not much to break it up.

[–]bumpymonkey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, Oblivion had an immense number of trees to block your view in many areas, making the game seem far bigger because you can't see the landscape.

[–]Scraw 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Diablo games could be a grey area since even though the maps are random, they have the same zones in the same arrangement with reasonably similar sizes.

[–]ZeMoose 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or they should have their own category, because it's still kind of interesting how big they can get.

[–]x-skeww 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Any somewhat bigger landscape is procedurally generated.

So, it's more about the amount of human intervention, but that's kinda fuzzy and you can't actually tell. E.g. a very sophisticated system may lead to landscapes which look like there was lots of human intervention, even if there wasn't any.

[–]Stickyresin 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Makes you wonder how exactly they come up with the size as a relatable unit measurement. I know developers often release their own figures as having so many km2, but they most likely all have different methods of converting from their engine's unit of measurement to km and semi-arbitrarily assigning some value as being 1 km. Not to mention the apparent size being relative to how high up the playercam is and how fast they are moving.

[–]dermballs 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember somebody doing the maths for GTA IV. They found out Nico was something like three times faster then the world record sprinter going on the stats the game provided. I always felt it was weird that in games like that the cars always drive slower than people walking.

[–]kwyjibohunter 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well have you ever tried walking somewhere versus driving somewhere in Manhattan?

[–]dermballs 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's true but as soon as you get into a car you can recklessly drive at any speed. In Manhattan jumping into a car and trying to make a high speed getaway wouldn't work very well. I know it is all done for the sake of game mechanics. Still feels a little off though.

[–]DanWallace 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What game are you playing? Once a car starts driving away you can't even catch it sprinting unless it slows down again.

[–]revolverzanbolt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My assumption would be relative size to the playable character.

[–]bomber991 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep. There's pretty much no scientific way to do this. You just have to arbitrarily say that X units of distance in the game is equal to X meters in real life, and then go from there. And yeah, since each game publisher says how big their world is, it's probably like penis measurements, where everyone says it's a little bigger than it really is.

[–]ThePancakeMan 91 points92 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh yay, this image again...

[–]unholyjustice 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. I want one with an Oblivion/Skyrim comparison. Skyrim certainly feels bigger...

[–]Fox_and_Ravens 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It does feel bigger but I'm betting that's because of the mountains and world map design. I bet it just looks bigger and more daunting than it actually is. But I've also only explored the stormcrow areas.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It feels smaller to me. I haven't explored a lot but judging by the time it takes to walk a certain distance with relation to the whole map, it's smaller.

[–]notanotherpyr0 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's about the same size. Oblivion has more walkable areas because it's overall flatter so in some ways it can feel bigger(and by that I mean endless), normally it takes longer to walk from point a to b because of mountains and hills in Skyrim so it can feel bigger. Morrowind is the smallest Elder Scrolls game but can feel the biggest because of its small viewing area and very windy terrain.

[–]concussedYmir 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I ran across Morrowind because I broke the fast-travel system. My broken spacebar key (from the constant jumping, you know, for Acrobatics) felt it was pretty huge.

[–]erratically_sporadic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Morrowind (or maybe one of its expansion packs) is actually bigger than Oblivion.

[–]KingOfFlan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not. It was a lot more corridor like and you had to take specific paths through some areas so it might take you longer to go from one point to another.

[–]dvallej 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ive read that the world is about the same size, but skyrim's feels bigger

[–]_TURbo 3 points4 points ago

Skyrim is also more detailed, more variety, and less repetitive which makes it bigger than Oblivion.

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points ago

I'm not sure. the Imperial City wasn't that big really.

[–]nivoo_boss 3 points4 points ago

This Burnout map is exaggerated for some reason, it has been told before about this comparison. Not sure how they measured it, but it is wrong.

[–]deanbmmv 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I'm unsure how they've calculated these sizes. Burnout Paradise especially. Just look at the roads in comparison to Far Cry 2 n Just Cause 2 maps. And I'm pretty sure Cyrodil is larger than Far Cry 2 map from what I remember, though having a car may have made things seem smaller. Then again that'd put singular shacks larger than entire towns of Cyrodil.

[–]neonknightz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah- WoW from 2004?

[–]lamqta 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, technically, it's still a valid comparison for WoW, the sizes of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms haven't changed and it would be hard to lump in Northrend, Outland and Pandaria into that comparison.

[–]skarface6 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How would it be hard to lump in Northrend? It's on the same world.

[–]lamqta 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah but you can't travel there normally, you use "fast-travel", but on the map it looks like a lot of space between it and the other continents, so it makes the world look bigger. You have to mentally remove all the oceans, for one.

[–]iliveinbellevue 7 points8 points ago

[–]ofNoImportance 2 points3 points ago

The total drawn map for NV is the same size as F3, except in F3 you can go right to the square borders, while in NV you can only explore about 2/3rds of that space.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it is.

[–]bedintruder 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This image has some major inaccuracies.

Just going off what I know... The World of Warcraft estimate is pretty low. It only considers 2 of 4 continents. Lord of the Rings online is a blatant lie, the world is smaller then WoW, its not a 1:1 scale of the 'actual' middle-earth. The size of Burnout is also false. The game features 200 miles of road, not 200 square miles of map. The actual size of the map is only about 26 square miles.

[–]T3pidMilk 3 points4 points ago

[–]Jaegs 11 points12 points ago

Ya I'm not sure about the scale on the Burnout map, it makes it look like Ironforge would fit into one intersection of Paradise City. If you compare Wow's map to Oblivions I think that looks about right though.

[–]Skoardy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Whenever someone trots out this image, I always feel the same way. Burnout looks way out of proportion to the rest of them and it throws the whole legitimacy of the comparisons out for me.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. It was designed to be twice the size of Great Britain. It had over well over 15,000 or so towns, cities and dungeons. And the dungeons in that game were insanely large. Much larger than anything you see in Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim. Personally, it would take me a half a day of playing to really figure out a dungeon's layout. Hidden walls are a bitch in a game with graphics like that. Cities were much larger. Even the smallest of cities and towns are larger than the Imperial City in Oblivion.

On the other hand, the game had less real content. Though cities were larger than the Imperial City, for example, a good portion of the buildings were there just to represent the size of the city, so you could imagine hundreds or thousands of people living in the city (closer to lore). In many cases, the buildings couldn't even be entered unless something interesting happens there. Oblivion's Imperial City, on the other hand, which should be much larger than it was represented according to the lore, was hand designed so each building and house had someone occupy it and you could enter that building.

it wasnt true open world either. you fast travel everywhere even if you've never been there before.

I would actually like to see these properly scaled, not just based on the limitations of the games they're featured in.

Such as cities (like the GTA games) being the smallest and worlds/continents being the largest.

[–]Silvire 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This isn't exactly 100% accurate, or even close to, actually.

Look at World of Warcraft. Are you telling me that each CONTINENT is only about 5 miles in width? That's rather impossible. Where is the person here getting his information? I highly doubt it's accurate...

Perhaps comparing different generations of GTA would be accurate, as with different generations of TES. But comparing different genres of games, with different mechanics, such as Burnout Paradise City and World of Wacraft. We can see that the entire WIDTH of the continent of Kalimdor is only about TWO traffic lights in Burnout Paradise City.

That just doesn't make sense, since this is meant to be an EQUAL comparison of map size, that is, 1 mile in World of Warcraft is equal to 1 mile in Paradise City.

My verdict? Inaccurate.

I've played both LotrO and WoW - and I'll tell you, there is no way that the area in Lotro is more than 300 times bigger than WoWs. Even vanilla WoW and LotrO were about the same (sometimes bigger imo). How the hell they thumbsuck that the game world size for Burnout is bigger than WoW I'd love to know.

tl:dr - They make up the sizes as they go along - no standard

I played LOTRO during beta and ran my little Hobbit from the Shire to the Misty Mountains in about 45 mins. I know there's been an expansion since then but come on...

[–]_oogle 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I'm not mistaken the LotrO size is extremely inaccurate because that's not actually the in-game accessible area.

I wonder if Guild Wars Nightfall is bigger then the original with or without Eye of the north in it...

[–]Cyanr 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not. And even if it was it would only be fair to include all of Guild Wars on such a list.

People have to remember also, just because a map is bigger, doesn't mean it feels bigger in game (that's what she said). It depends on how long it takes to travel everywhere. for example, in burnout, you're going at god knows how many miles per hour across the city, thus not feeling like a big city. In san andreas you try and do that, and you crash, blowing up your car, thus having to walk though the desert for hours on end, making the game feel huge. The first mario is a perfect example of this. The first level is only about 15 seconds long, but it takes the player about a minute to get through it.

This can't be right. The ships in Burnout and about the same size as the airport in San Andreas. No no no, this doesn't add up at all.

Another game with huuuge map that I've played quite alot would be WWII Online Battleground Europe. Taken from wiki :"WWIIOL online uses a ½ scale map of Western Europe with 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) of accurate terrain (800 m resolution satellite data). It is commonly recognized as the first MMOFPS."

For a picture http://www.tgpo.net/

Nasty to drive in a tank column for hours only to get wiped by first shot of enemy at gun at the destination.

This map is completely wrong. LOTRO Map is around 200 Square miles according to the forums.

Not to mention that a road in burnout seems to be wider than the entire GTA:SA Caligula's palace Casino.

It seems like the guy who did this converted square meters to square miles pretty badly.

[–]monster_hugs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

False.

These are overworld maps. most games have a huge amount of area that load as seperate sections within the world map. dungeons for example.

scale is also something to take into account. the burnout and just cause maps are a great example of this. look at how big wow is as opposed to burnout. anyone who has played both will tell you wow is larger by an order of magnitude.

Daggerfall shouldn't count, it's randomly generated. Also procedurally generated worlds shouldn't count, otherwise Minecraft would possibly win.

Asobo Studios received a certificate from Guinness World Records for creating the largest playable videogame environment.

Someone from Rock, Paper, Shotgun spent a day trying to circumnavigate it:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/06/22/fuel-around-the-world-in-eight-hours/

In The Binding Of Isaac, your character is actually one of the Elder Gods of the Cthulhu mythos, making the average level approximately the size of the universe.

FTFY. By this graphic, it takes the same amount of time to traverse the entire gameworld of Oblivion as travelling from Tirisfal Glade to Eastern Plaguelands in WoW? Also: LOTRO half the size of Daggerfall? Bullshit.

Daggerfall is randomly/procedurally generated. So it really wouldn't feel unique or special when walking around, you'd see lots of places being re-used etc. etc.

The world map itself is not generated. It has that huge size. It's some contents of the map that are generated (like cave X could be a bit more to the north or to the east etc)

Man, I keep seeing this comparison with WoW... That picture is only of the original Azeroth. I don't know exactly how much bigger it makes it, but there have been 2 very significant expansions since then with completely different maps added on that were smaller than the original, but still pretty big. I'm curious to see how it matches up with those added to it.
