You know... I actually used this line on my super crazy religious aunt... and she totally blew my mind by coming back with the response that she actually believed all those gods existed, but that they were all either dead or powerless, and that Yahweh was the only "living God". Yes, she seriously said she believed Zeus and Thor and Quetzalcoatl were real.

It was at that point I realize she was completely bonkers and bowed out of the conversation.

My dad argues that they're all the same god, just worshiped and understood differently for different cultures - perhaps on purpose (IE god appeals to different cultures in different ways).

The flaws in that argument are obvious, but it does kind of invalidate this argument.

This is why "Pascal's Wager" is foolish.

I used to tell my parents I believed in the Christian god because I had statistically higher chance of being right/it mattering. I termed it hedging my bets. Then one day I decided that I just wasn't going to waste my time anymore

There isn't a degree of atheism. You either are or you are not. Theism is a belief in a deity, A-Theism is the opposite of that. Atheism is a lack of a belief in a deity. You can not argue "well Theists are the same because they lack belief in tons of deities" because they still believe in one, thus are theists, thus are not atheists.

I get the point of the message, but it's a terrible way to word it, and is simply wrong. There's better ways.

I agree with Pinworm. I've never liked that part of the quote.

I do, however, like the "When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours." I have used it before in conversation and it works well.

The rest can be discarded.

And this is why wikiquote is the greatest invention ever. A great way to find nice things to quote without having any idea who the person behind the words happen to be. ;)

"Stephen F Roberts said it and I take it to heart. Think about it when I debate theists and take em apart." -Greydon Square

That's a brilliant argument, and I'm not even an atheist.

I apologize if my identification "not an atheist" offends you. Great post nonetheless.
