Agreed.

REALLY? Scary? The main "big bad" is a red guy in tights with goat leggings, who spends his time sewing and listening to Tiny Tim? That's not scary. That's back-stage at Lion King.

[–]spankthrough 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was a pretty scary for me right up until he flashes behind the dude while they're talking. After that, it just became a kind of fun poltergeist spinoff.

The old lady was scary.

[–]unnoved 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

YES the old fucking witch....I know that it may not have been that scary but the concept behind it is mind boggling..... having a twisted spirit looking to possess you since you were a kid is just fucked up man.

[–]contrapulator 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The plot thickens! I looked it up on IMDB and it seems that the old lady was actually an old man.

That exact part was scary for me, just because of the surprise factor. I felt that this movie was more about the jumpy scenes than actual scares. :/

It really made no sense when she was talking with the gas mask on. I laughed throughout the whole film, although I was severely hammered at the moment.

Yeah wtf did that movie turn into? I haven't been frightened by scary movies since I was 8 and this one actually gave me a chill and then they brought out the ghost hunters and did a 180 with the damn thing.

[–]doggylog 1 point2 points ago

Me too, nothing really scares me any more since being subjected to horror from the age of 8 onwards, my cousins used to put all sorts of shit on.. my first horror - killer clowns from outer space. This film made me jump and the music added to the scenes just gave it that extra scary factor.. Mint film!

I loved Insidious! I'm a sucker for cheesy yet creepy, supernatural horrors. There was plenty of stuff like that when I was growing up, but for a long time now thrillers like Scream or torture porn like Saw have been considered mainstream "horror." I'm not a big fan of watching people murder people, but give me the uncertainty of the unknown any day. Insidious and Paranormal Activity go for cheap screams, but I think it's a fun ride.

[–]kev11n 19 points20 points ago

reaallllyy good horror flick. The cave made you feel so claustrophobic and the ending was awesome.

[–]proto04 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree completely. My favorite horror movies are the ones that make you laugh a bit, scare the hell out of you, then touch on the impossible without going overboard. We watch movies to be entertained, and even with the cheesy nature of this movie its still very enjoyable.

[–]pipplo 2 points3 points ago

[–]alostsoldier 0 points1 point ago

Haha yeah. I had heard of this movie before I saw it on TV one night. It definitely dragged.

If I say "Did you pick up in all the subtle pieces that fit together perfectly on 2nd watching but are completely lost on first viewing", would you know what I am talking about?

I watched this a 2nd time and my mind was blown. I watched it with someone who was seeing it for the first time and I kept going "OH SHIT! that makes so much sense now!"

[–]alostsoldier 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I see it on again I'll watch it. I'm not saying it was a bad movie it was just kind of slow and only had a few moments of suspense.

I loved that movie. I enjoyed the cheap scares they got out of me and bought every minute of it. I don't understand why everyone hated Insidious but love Paranormal Activity.

[–]Murmaider 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. I absolutely loved the fact that it was shot in a old school kind of way. The only scene i didn't like was where the demon is crawling on the wall.

[–]batcountryresident 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I liked Insidious when I saw it in theaters, but I can see why people wouldn't like it. It scared the hell out of me though and that's really all that counts.

[–]GowsenBerry 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was a good movie, but after the dad enters the red guys lair it just seemed a bit corny and out of place from the rest of the movie. Come on, there's no way you were still scared when you saw the red guy listening to Tiny Tim.

[–]stormraper 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I DO WHAT LIKE JUST HOW I LIKE AND HOW I LOVE IT

[–]kilogramZombies11111 0 points1 point ago

yeah it probably isn't as good outside of the theater.

[–]d7b 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I watched it as telesync rip and thought it was awesome.

its an older style of horror. blood and guts dont make a movie scary for me (I work in surgery all day...) . but the tensions created through cinematic devices are what makes it dramatic to me.

the scene shots and music made the flick for me...

[–]Hairy_dan 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am usually a little pussy when it comes to horror movies, but they usually keep me compelled in the plot/concept enough to keep me watching. Insidious was fantastic in this regard (except maybe for the last few scenes). Paranormal Activity? Poorly executed, over hyped, boring crap. I wasn't even scared. The whole movie is doors opening.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4: RETURN OF THE DOOR In a world where doors open, some stupid unlikable couple will film themselves every night and see another door open. With revolutionary hinge CGI, Paranormal activity is sure to be the biggest film of the year

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah that movie sucked. Oooooh, the door moved! The ouija board caught on fire! A burned picture appeared in the attic! So scary!

[–]Krusiv 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know the same thing could be said for any other horror movie out there. All that matters is how much you let yourself get into it. If you see PA in theaters with the mindset of "fuck this shit, its just doors and blah blah" then of course you aren't going to like it...

[–]Candies1205 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I enjoyed it until the alternate world part of the movie. From then til the end, I thought it was extremely cheesy.

[–]Visulth 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I "enjoyed" (I do have criticisms, but they're not relevant) the Paranormal Activity movies and did not enjoy Insidious at all. This is mainly because the PA movies managed to get a couple scares out of me; obviously all jump scares but scares nonetheless.

Insidious, however, did not get one. Not one. It's probably that I was on a different frequency than the movie is the only way I can explain it. Every single monster or ghost just looked so obviously like a person in makeup or costume. The red devil thing looked like the paint hadn't even dried yet. I was never able to get immersed into the movie because of that jarring fakeness.

[–]velveteenmage -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But the ending was awesome you have to admit!

[–]judithshakespeare 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Paranormal Activity worked for me because, minus one or two things, it was believable for a horror film. Insidious was fine until they tried to explain what was going on and it was so fucking ridiculous I spent the rest of the film wishing it would end.

Insidious freaked me the FUCK. OUT.

I hear you. I, too, forced Boyfriend to patrol the door when I went to the bathroom. After see the previews oh, about twice, I would change that freakin channel so fast it became instinctual. I do not know why I watched the entire movie. It was a poor decision.

[–]fearlessly 0 points1 point ago

Entirely opposite here. Boyfriend refused to watch the commercials, I more or less dragged him to see it. HE clung to ME the entire movie.

It was so old fashioned!! Took me back to the good old horror films that used to be produced.

The thought that I took away from Insidious is that there is a director alive whose ending of a movie made me literally yell "FUCK YOU" at the TV, and it literally STILL makes me mad.

Insidious was sooo bad, the demon was just silly and there wasn't even a real story to the old lady....

The grudge was way better

Insidious is not scary at all. How can people find a movie creepy when it has 'scare' scenes every 5 minutes and the main bad guy is Darth Maul?! The only slightly creepy part was that odd family sat still in the living room...

Same goes for that Paranormal Activity junk - there's a rumbling bass sound before every scare scene... giving you time to prepare for what's coming. Awful.

Try David Lynch... that's tension done right - Mulholland Drive, after an hour or so, out of fucking nowhere... that homeless guy. Or that 'thing' toward the end of Inland Empire. They draw you right into a comfort zone only to make you involuntarily shit your bricks.

Also to note are Dark Water (Japanese version), Noroi, A Tale of Two Sisters, Shutter (Japanese version). Educate yourselves god damn it.

Thanks. I was looking for a post that reflected my exact feelings.

I liked the build up of Insidious then it just got goofy.

It was a better attempt art classical styling than don't be afraid of the dark.

This and the cat that hiccups and farts at the same time are my two favourite youtube clips. Timeless classics. Upvote for you!

I think most of us are desensitized to scary movies by now. At least I think I am.

This movie needed Russel Crowe in it...so he could entertain me instead of this not very scary horror movie.

As if the video wasn't posted on Reddit enough. Now we get the GIF posted with a dozen different submission titles.

I watched Insidious because someone lied to me and said it was scary. But instead, I got Darth Maul with a Tiny Tim fixation and Mormon ghostbusters who wander around with toys from my childhood.

I still can't get "tiptoe through the tulips" out of my head.

But if they were aiming for a few laughs, I guess it was funny

I thought it was a pretty bad movie. Watched it with the girlfriend late at night with all the lights off and we couldn't stop laughing at how terrible the monsters were and how bad the acting was.
