Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Aye, light pollution is a great tragedy. I have never seen such a beautiful sight set before my eyes in my time, I live too close to a city.

Depressed enough to turn off your computer and move to the wilderness?

The reason you have never seen this type of sky is because the picture is taken with an extremely long exposure, not because your sky is "light polluted".

Even with a long exposure, light pollution from a nearby city will overpower any discernible galactic detail.

I'm not denying that light pollution exist, but even with zero light pollution, the sky would still not look like in OP's or your picture.

I don't know. In Rock Island, WI, there is minimal light pollution, and there are stars upon stars in the sky. Every single time I camp there, I can't believe how many stars are visible...it's overwhelming in it's beauty.

The biggest difference in that situation is your eyes adjusting for the relative darkness by increasing their light sensitivity.

You do understand that that is exactly what light pollution prevents, right?

Typically, what we mean by light pollution is the partial reflection of light in the atmosphere back down to earth. If you are close to a city and look towards the sky, there will be a glow effect from reflected light that blocks out and swallows the light from less bright stars. This is something that cannot be overcome by simply changing the light sensitivity of the eyes or camera.

Can you imagine that the sky used to look like this everywhere? Fucking pollution. Humans suck, we ruin everything

I've never seen lights like this except for in pictures. Could you see this with your naked eye? Or did you need a special lense to take this?

[–]rabbitlion 1 point2 points ago

It's 90% exposure time 10% light pollution.

Depends on where you are in the world. Light pollution is a big factor as well. Lots of shots like this are taken with long exposures to get the most light possible.

how long of an exposure?

[–]Axilrod 0 points1 point ago

Well it depends on the focal length, if you open it up too long you'll get star trails. I'm guessing that pic was probably 4-5 seconds, aperture close to wide open, ISO1600-3200. It's also possible that it's a few pictures merged together, I know they do that sometimes.

The key is doing it somewhere that's practically pitch black, but you can get some decent results even inside the city (they just have to be processed more)

Loch Ard is high lake in Irish, it seems very fitting. By the way where is this?

We are truly fortunate to exist in a time where we can see the stars with such clarity!
