This is a great picture. The only flaw I could find in it is that Friedrich Nietzsche never actually said "A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything." That is a paraphrase of an excerpt from his book "The Antichrist" where he said:

"That faith makes blessed under certain circumstances, that blessedness does not make of a fixed idea a true idea, that faith moves no mountains but puts mountains where there are none: a quick walk through a madhouse enlightens one sufficiently about this."

Here's to hoping someone will rectify this issue. I so dearly want to use this little gem of a pamphlet to challenge people, but I don't want to do this when there are verifiable untruths.

Such as the part where the pamphlet says "christians disbelieve 9,999 gods, atheists take it one god further." I would personally change it to "thousands", instead of providing an easily refutable point a theist can latch onto.

I think I'm going to try my hand at modifying it with some supplemental information.

I would personally expand on the "ethno-centrist cultural baggage" tangent of the pamphlet with some questions to the reader, such as: "You were born atheist, so why are you now a christian? DO you agree that if you were born in India you would most likely be Hindu? If... in Iraq... Muslim? etc.

Also, I would raise the issue of the inbreeding that supposedly led to the all of humankind and its wildly varied races.

I would also touch upon the fact that none of the authors of the bible ever met Jesus, and the hand written translations of translations, and then mention the "telephone game".

I'm sure I will think of a few more things, but I would essentially love to add another page or two to this "pamphlet."

Anyhow, thanks for sharing.

I would love to have a copy of a revised version, if you do make one!

Sadly I didn't make this, but good to know!

This has been around a long time, and IIRC it has a number of serious errors, including much of the info about Mithra. Apparently the New Zealand humanists can't be bothered to fix it.

Original pdf and html (html loads fast, but looks much different)

I'm going to stand outside my local church on Sunday with a bunch of these asking people if they'd like to question/learn more about their religion. That's a polite thing to do right?

Is there a chance for editable format?

Ask and ye shall receive, child. 666KB PDF (I have a feeling they padded the file outside of the rendered data to get that size)

If editing PDFs isn't your thing, the original text comes from this page, which links the PDF I linked.

If this isn't in AtheistGems, it should be.

A very enjoyable and interesting read. I must comment that I really liked the choice of the cover picture; it's the same (albeith mirrored) as on my philosophy textbook. xD

This was too horribly reminiscent of those fundamentalist pamphlets.

I would love to print this out and post it up around my university.

Perhaps you should pray for god to make it happen? Or another idea would be for you to do that. Especially if you would love to do it. Carpe Diem.

After receiving Jesus pamphlets on my car two days in a row... I greatly enjoy this.

Horus was not born of virgin as some have said.

He was born of a woman that was sexed by a gold penis she herself shaped.

I still haven't worked out myself how this really changes the statement any.

I am investigating atheism and this is not the right way to convert people. The bible may not be true but it says nothing about killing non virgins and shit that is just fucked up and sick.

Um, it gives you the verses that say those things right there in the pamphlet.

I agree with you that it is fucked up and sick.

Kill non-virgins: "But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel:

Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you."

  • Deuteronomy 22:20-21

Kill nonbelievers (even if they are your family): "If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you ... Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die."

  • Deuteronomy 13:6-10

The statement "The good is tainted by the bad that surrounds it" is the killer here. Someone could post -My friends ask me why I'm religious. I print them one of these-, and it could contain the exact same statement.

This image is pretty flawed, especially with the Mithra thing. It would be nice to compose a factual one though.
