The Pineberry was not saved from extinction. The Pineberry is a cross-breed of a wild South American strawberry and the common North American strawberry.

Not sure if trolling but i will bite. The reason for seeds in fruit is for it to be eaten, digested, and after the animal has digested and presumably moved, expelled from the body. This is how plants were designed to spread/travel.

[–]LifeFailure 56 points57 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? I always thought they were designed to go into little packages that would eventually be bought by bored housewives and dumped in a garden that would be cared for for two weeks before it became overrun by weeds and gnomes.

[–]shobogenzo 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]bo87 0 points1 point ago

And the seeds fit perfectly INTO the bag! Therefore they are designed.

[–]putin_my_ass 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But different animals digest food differently, so a human digesting the seed might destroy it so it will never germinate but when a specific type of Civet does it the seed is not killed.

[–]lovethekush -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

BUT this is only if the seeds aren't crushed and destroyed that's why some animals have specific plants they eat

According to Jarred Diamond, that's more or less how we ended up with Almonds - or at least edible almonds, people eating poison (cyanide heavy) Almonds tends to be ill / die on the spot) , but healthier people might not chew all the almonds or discard some and thus we inadvertently got a predominantly safe almond plant over time.

[–]ms91972 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure thats how most European vegetation made it to the Americas. Especially the grasses that animals ate on voyages across the Atlantic.

[–]shrankthetank 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It won't work. It's a hybrid plant and will more than likely produce red strawberries. You could get the plant and clone it. A cloning machine is pretty cheap.

[–]PandaBearShenyu 1 point2 points ago

So, the seeds from those plants wont grow the same plants, but can you clone the original plant?

[–]shaunc 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's typical of a hybrid; seeds from the hybrid will typically revert to producing one of the "parent" plants.

Actually, from the information that I'm reading, it's not commercially grown due to low yield and small size. Even a farmers' market needs to make money, and if the cost of producing pineberry is really high, then it's not a viable product for retailers.

Even in Europe, it appears that it's mostly sold to restaurants that are probably upscale restaurants who can pay a high price for it because they can sell it to their clientele at a much higher price. Imagine of this was used in a dessert as a garnish. You could just put one pineberry on it to accentuate the presentation and make it slightly exotic, which means you can probably charge another 5 dollars in the right environment.

Also, everything I'm reading about Burpee seems to suggest that they're pretty awful when it comes to customer service.

[–]learningphotoshop 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have never had any troubles with Burpee. I have only used them twice, but both times have been fine. I had to return one package, the customer service was pretty quick. Although like I said I have only used them twice.

they are delicious but I don't think that these taste even remotely like pineapples. One of my favorite strawberry varieties is one which reminds me to coconuts.

I am not sure where to get seeds but white strawberry plants are fairly common in Europe. If you can't get older varieties in the US I'd recommend to order a couple of them from Europe. There are collectors in Germany who sell them and many have unique and wonderful tastes.

[–]Guybrush_Threepwood 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So it's not European, I was about to question the name since if it was really an european bread the name will very likely not include "pine" since pineapple are called like that just in english language, in most the others languages it's a variation of the word "anana".

[–]smokinDND 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is not a pine berry, the European descendant is a pine-berry [1] This is the original white strawberry with a nice berry taste and almost perfect shape.

"As a cautionary note, purple pineberry seeds will not grow any sort of strawberry plant. ‘Purple Pineberry’ is a specific cultivar of marijuana. So, ordering and growing purple pineberry seeds off the internet may gain you unwanted attention."

I'm quite curious as to the story behind why they said this.

I'll 2nd this. They have the texture of a strawberry without any flavor. They taste nothing like strawberries or pineapples.

At best you might be able to use them for their visual appearance as they have nothing else to offer.

Prejudice against Twilight fans isn't about people liking what others don't, it's about the majority of Twilight fans being batshit fucking crazy and obsessive over something that, in my humble opinion, wasn't worth printing and sure as Hell wasn't worth turning into a movie.

[–]DarkRider23 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Kind of like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings fans, right?

[–]MrJelle 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really, no. I've met plenty of people who were hugely into HP or LotR without me really ever noticing. Twilight fanatics (again, not all of them but the majority) seem to be unable to shut up about it and, perhaps more frustratingly, try to get you involved.

Team Edward vs Team Jacob, ugh.

:Edit: I actually had someone ask me which team I was on once. I told them, maybe out of misplaced politeness, that I didn't read the books or saw the movies and didn't really care for them much (understatement). That was the last time that person spoke to me, and I feel happier for it.

Interesting that it's called "pineberry," since the root for the word "pineapple" in many other languages is "anana-" or a variation thereof.

"As a cautionary note, purple pineberry seeds will not grow any sort of strawberry plant. ‘Purple Pineberry’ is a specific cultivar of marijuana. So, ordering and growing purple pineberry seeds off the internet may gain you unwanted attention."

I live in Europe so mostly eat in Europe. Well, actually because I live here I exclusively eat here. I have been to shops in Belgium, Holland, Germany and England and have not seen these so called pineberries. I reckon that I'd have more chance of finding Elvis partying with Osama, JFK and Rick Astly in a secret bunker in Yemem while a dancing horse called Harold DJ's 70's disco on in DJ box swinging from the earlobe of t-rex.

I grow 'White Delight' alpine strawberries. they also taste a bit like pineapple. not sure if these are the same thing, but Fragaria vesca is far from extinct.

[–]trakor 0 points1 point ago

those look tasty. can they be grown in europe?

[–]SLOKUM_DIES_FRIDAY 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i suppose so. they are Alpine strawberries, after all. And to get germination, they have to experience at least a few weeks of freeze, which leads me to suspect they do well in temperate climates. Also, they do better in much partial shade than full sun, as I am experiencing now. Nights where I am get down to the high 30s (F; 3-5 C) or lower, and I am still picking fruit.

[–]trakor 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

thanks ! I live in austria so I don't think the alpine's gonna be a problem.

Pineberries are hybrids. They are a cross between two different species of strawberry plants. They are a cross between the white beach strawberry native to South America (Fragaria chiloensis) and the native North American strawberry (Fragaria virginiana).

White strawberries have been around for a while in a unique location in Chile. It can only be cultivated on a mountain range by a small town called Puren. It has been its local pride for generations, they usually use it in a white wine/strawberry punch.

The one in the picture might be a different variation/offspring with a pineapple taste, in 1712 plant was brought to France, with no success with the original white berry they mixed it with other variaties to create the modern Strawberry (Fragaria ananassa). The one in Puren has it’s original strawberry taste. Students from nearby universities have been trying to grow them in different locations with not much success, probably with this pineapple taste you refer to, I believe in the past year they had better results and are trying to export and replicate its cultivation. It is not a pine berry, the European descendant is a pine-berry This is the original white strawberry with a nice berry taste and almost perfect shape.

This Pineberry is a hybrid of Fragaria chiloensis, originating in South America and Fragaria virginiana, originating in North America. The fruit flesh can range from soft white to orange and is very fragrant with a slight pineapple flavor. The plant is disease resistant, but is not very profitable.
