He would used the clone tool to paint out the original cat, then the smudge tool to soften any visible mistakes, then find a cat picture on google images and cut it out with the polygon lasso tool. Paste it, scale it, color correct it, then paint a little shadow.

Sometimes I'm convinced that such perfectly executed shots must be staged. The light is soft and accentuating; the characters perfectly posed, even the cat; leading lines direct your eyes to the important spots; rule of thirds... yep. Even the fading scooter in the background adds to the theme.

But then I realize I'm just not as good a photographer :(

No, don't be so hard on yourself. Almost all great shots ARE planned or manipulated in post, including this one.

All the color work and making it look like film was all done in photoshop, and that cat is wondering what the fuck that kid is doing with that flute, because he sure doesn't know how to play it. Great photo though.

To be fair, it has nothing to do with old cameras. It's more to do with the degradation and quality of materials used at the time that make old photographs look "old". I use 100 year old cameras to make images that look just as modern as what a MkII would take...

As journeymanSF pointed out, this image has been heavily modified in post. Some of it is more obvious in the tumbnail or if you tilt your (LCD) screen back: look at all the glow around the boy and the kitten. It's a subtle effect in the full-size image, but it works to guide your eye and provide depth to the frame by greater contrasting the plane of the subjects against the darker background. The bottom left corner is also darkened to direct your eye away from it.

Also, it's entirely possible that the blur of the background is due to the lens of the photographer, but a similar effect could be obtained by selecting a triangular patch of the image, feathering the border of the side across from the corner, and using Photoshop or somesuch to apply a blur.

This subtle removal of information is fun to play with. I suggest you fool around with Gimp and see what happens.

I'd be interested to know why you think that.

I can see some very small edits - there's an apparently incomplete one by the boy's left knee and some little bits of cleaning up, but nothing heavy. There's nothing in LAB A or B where I'd expect to see some evidence of cloning or painting in, and the histograms look smooth and clean to me.

I assume that the border, grain and hairs etc were added in post, as was the grading. But those are pretty minor stylistic considerations and don't make the image or its content fake in any way.

Now, it's possible that most of the image is fake. If it is, it's been exceptionally carefully done; the depth of field in particular would be very time consuming indeed to fake. I'd apply the usual rule of practicality to this: it could be faked, but it'd be more difficult than just shooting it that way in the first place.
