ninja edit, welp, it turns out that that was the joke. Since it was spread over several posts, it was hard to notice (just like my late baby brother, may he rest in peace, that bastard).

It's not a ninja edit if you write it out and bold it. At that point, it just becomes an edit.

This is nearly the entire content of the front page of /r/atheism in one image. Why nearly? 4 of the links were actual text.. but none of the 25 were links to actual information or articles.
Why is a subreddit consisting of predominantly pictures/comics/memes (that would be considered hate speech if it were about [race/gender/sexual orientation]) be included in the default front page?
It's essentially become mindless entertainment, like most of the default front page (unfortunately), but its infusion of hate and intolerance makes it slightly different... these specific characteristics should be reason enough to exclude it from being on the default front page of reddit.
Forget that it's mostly just rage comics and image macros, forget that it's basically hate speech that wouldn't be tolerated if the topic was altered slightly...
what I, as an atheist (since long before reddit was around), find the most obnoxious, is the fact that I never saw religion (and all the negativity that comes along with it) mentioned on the default front page as much as after /r/atheism was included. I get sick of the witch-hunt/mob-justice/us-vs-them/persecution complex type mentality that seems to completely saturate every element of that subreddit.
In my eyes, it's really no different than if /r/christianity was on the default front page and I had to see threads about how I'm going to hell all the time. EDIT: just an observation of /r/christianity — lots of self posts, 3 images: 1 from /r/atheism, 1 with 0 points, and 1 of a painting. nothing mentioning how stupid nonbelievers are, or even other religions. quite the contrast.
Yes, I know someone is going to point out that I can just unsubscribe. I was never subscribed, but I don't always sign in. Not only that, many of the porn subreddits have more traffic than /r/atheism. Why aren't they default front page subreddits?
And really... in the spirit of equality, if you're going to give the anti-religious a platform for exposure, why not the religious as well? At the very least you could allow the most popular religion-based sub on the default front page. Otherwise, you're subjugating them to the same kind of treatment you criticize them for in the first place. Or...
Keep ALL subreddits related to religion (including criticism of it) as opt-in rather than default, and at the same time help the site maintain some of its dignity.
[–]dressiertugboat 16 points17 points18 points 9 months ago
Yeah, except race, sexual orientation and gender are not things that are willfully chosen, like religion is. Which is why religion is not above criticism. Should it default to the frontpage? I don't know, I don't really care, but saying it's basically a hate crime is a little dishonest.
[–]damndirtyape 6 points7 points8 points 9 months ago
The religious subreddits aren't on the front page because they're not as popular. If r/Christianity got as many subscribers as r/atheism, it would be on the front page too.

To be fair, a MAJOR portion of their GDP per capita results from the large oil and natural gas deposits God had given them and which they have so callously taken advantage of without giving proper thanks.
[–]Meneth 7 points8 points9 points 9 months ago
Actually, Norway would be quite rich even without the oil. The economy in Norway when ignoring the oil is very similar to the rest of northern Europe, most of which is also amongst the richest in the world.

Perhaps pointing out a potential argument that casts doubt on the argument that Norway's has excellent quality of life without god. If you do give credit to god for the oil and gas, as many Christians would, then they're doing well because of god.
Something like that anyway. It can probably be debunked by pointing out that other countries with comparable resources don't have close to the same quality of life, and Norway does pretty well even without the oil revenue, but the argument is reasonable.
Then again, I suspect quality of life is a cause of atheism rather than the other way round.

I was planning on making an asshole reply to this. However, I'd just like to point out we don't feel obligated to thank God for this oil, as most of us doesn't believe in such an entity. I refrained from making an asshole reply due to the fact that I respect your choice of being a theist, and I hope you can do the same towards atheists.

[–]cryo 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
All right, but take Denmark, then. Somewhat similar but with less oil and GDP. Still pretty good. (Also, we used to rule Norway!)
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Heh.
Assuming that's true, and remembering that God is omniscient, then God knew they would be atheists and not thank him for the oil.
So, god gave them the foundation of their economic success, they refuse to thank him, and he does nothing? Then why does he punish the USA for being insufficiently religious?

[–]triacle 12 points13 points14 points 9 months ago*
According to wiki, 80% of Norwegians are Evangelical Lutherans. Meanwhile, Cambridge studies estimate atheists at somewhere between 30% and 70%. Both cannot be true. Here's some information about how some of this can be explained by a number of mechanisms in norwegian law and tradition.
By Norwegian law, you are pretty much christian by default and must opt out to be considered anything else. Furthermore, it is tradition to baptize your children even if no one in the family is particularly religious. It's also common that older generations literally bribe younger ones into doing a christian confirmation.
If either of your parents are members of the church when you are born, you are automatically considered a member until you opt out or fail to be baptized within 18 years. You cannot opt out until the age of 15. Since most people never bother opting out of the church membership even if they do lose their faith (or never had any), this becomes an endless cycle of largely involuntary and temporary membership to the church.
I was raised in a small rural town on Norway's west coast. I was baptized at birth by two atheist parents, to appease my grandparents. When I turned 15 my grandma tried to bribe me into confirming my faith with the church even though she knew I had no faith whatsoever. I was offered a substantial amount of money, around USD $2500 (although many of my friends were offered two or even three times that) to lie about my having faith.
I refused, but none of my friends did the same. I grew up in a town where religious kids were made fun of and even beat up, where atheism was the norm! In spite of this, most of the people I knew were happy to take the bribe and pretend they cared about Jesus for a few hours in return for that kind of money.
The driving force behind the church's high member count is not faith, it's a national obsession with tradition over principles and reason.
[–]Bilderberg_Zerg 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
This post needs to get upvoted as it actually reflects Norwegian reality.

I was offered a substantial amount of money, around USD $2500 (although many of my friends were offered two or even three times that) to lie about my faith. This is extremely common where I grew up.
I would have taken the money, gotten confirmed, and immediately apostasized the next day!

[–]DefinitelyRelephant 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
How do you think my grandparents would have felt about me taking their money and then sticking it to them?
Probably the same way that I would feel if my grandparents offered me fucking money to pretend to convert.
That is, enormously insulted.
The way I see it, if someone wants to insult me that deeply, I'll happily take their fucking money.
Then again, I am a vindictive son of a bitch, so maybe the solution that would work for me wouldn't work for everyone else. :)
[–]DefinitelyRelephant 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
That's where you and I differ. Blood or not, if someone can't think things through logically and prefers to just insult my integrity by offering me money to change my philosophy on life, as if 2500 bucks could suddenly bring God into existence, then as far as I'm concerned it's my duty to take advantage of them.
Insults like that are an open declaration of war :)

I am a Norwegian christian! .. according to wiki..
I have lived the last 7 years in Oslo and before that I spent all my life in Kristiansand. THE most religious place you will find in Norway. I can honestly say that on an average day, in both those places, you never hear the words "God this, God that, Sins here 'n there, eternal this, damnation that" etc etc. If an average Norwegian finds him/herself in a situation where religion is a topic, they are most likely talking to someone's grandma or having a few beers at the pub.
There are exceptions ofc. For example "that crazy lady" in Kristiansand who is handing out fliers stating that squids are Satan's minions because they have homosexual relations in the darkest depths of the ocean. Or "that guy" in Oslo who's carrying a ginormous banner with "Jesus Will Save You" on it. He's only out when the weather is nice tho so I am not all that convinced about his apparent fanaticism. Had a talk with him once and he was very polite and a good conversationalist.
But I say this. As a 28 year old male. Every single time I have revealed my origin to another Norwegian the instant reaction is either 1) "Haha, you are from the bible belt"* or 2) "Ah that's nice. I love Kristiansand! You know my uncle.. blablabla". Never a word about religion.
In my personal opinion Norwegian christianity is more about the teachings of Jesus. I have never witnessed any christian alienate anyone. Never heard a christian in person say "give your life to Jesus or you are FUUUU**ED". I've been to 5-6 sermons and it was all about being kind to your fellow man. As a teenager I went to a bible group for teens so I could make fun of them; I left baffled at how awesome they were at playing guitar.
Just my observations so far in life..
*The Bible Belt: A nick name for all the most southern towns in Norway who are known for having a more fundamental view on christianity along with a wider variety of different christian denominations. Like Jehovah's Witnesses.

Is the reason for their economic success because they do not believe in God or because of their lack of "diversity?" Hum?
[–]LOUD-DUCK 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
A lot of people miss these kinds of points. Norway has never been significantly culturally diverse (but it is evolving with a steady rate). USA is several times bigger, is highly more diverse and has a private systems setup for higher education and healthcare. All of these combined makes people want different things. Since the population of Norway deviates significantly less than that of USA's, most of the time economical, political, infrastructural change is slow. While the atheist factor does play a role, it is not wise to attribute Norway's high rankings on these lists to atheism alone.
[–]dunamis-now 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Please explain what role the atheist factor does play. Size and want are irrelevent. Either they are diverse or they are not. I understand with greater size comes more diversity but, that is my point.
[–]MarlonBain 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago

[–]BingoJohnny 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
No, we do not have socialism. We have social democracy. Huge difference.
What I really meant was that though you are a capitalistic democracy, you have many substantial gov't programs to progressively redistribute earnings for the common good which includes things like assistance with retirement, college, health care, unemployment benefits etc and that those programs have a socialist basis. Perhaps that is a definition of a social democracy.(?)
It seems that the evidence is in: there are segments of the economy for which the pure free market is suboptimal.
Well, the official definition of social democracy is "evolutionary reformist socialism". But that term is somewhat outdated, at least in Norway, as there is very little socialism left to be found (at least when applying the traditional communist definition) in the political landscape.
The progressive redistribution of earnings that you mention is more commonly known as "the welfare state". It does however not have a "socialist base". The welfare state as a concept seeks to provide and protect the economic and social (hereunder religious) well-being of its citizens. But the Scandinavian model of the welfare state differs greatly from traditional socialism - the state distributes welfare with an absolute minimum of bureaucratic interference, and is able to do so mainly due to high taxation (also known as redistributionist taxation).
TL;DR: we're not socialists, and we're not happy about being called socialists.
As I wrote, I just meant that you had some elements of it, i.e. "the welfare state". I did not mean to imply that you were a socialist state. Sorry about that in particular given, as I've just learned, that the term is so offensive to you guys.
my bad.

C'mon....... I'm not here to hate on Atheism but sometimes these statements are just so obviously false.
[–]ThunderbearIM 30 points31 points32 points 9 months ago
I'd like to mention, I'm a member of the state church. I'm almost militant in my atheism though. You get admitted into it when you're born. They also break a lot of laws about you being in the state church or not. Like a friend of mine as he is not baptized should legally not be a member after he turned 18, but he still is. Next it is that only about 20% of Norwegians say that religion plays an important part of their lives.

Scandinavia, where the only thing propping up the churches is sheer apathy.
[–]Meneth 6 points7 points8 points 9 months ago
32% of Norwegian citizens responded that "they believe there is a God"
So when eliminating the 4% who answered that they do not know, that's 64% atheists. Not far off from what the comic stated.
Using the membership of the state church to determine atheism would be silly, as most Norwegians just never bother to leave the church even if they're atheist (as you're in the church automatically if your parents are in it)
[–]LatwPIAT 9 points10 points11 points 9 months ago
The church also has a tendency to update it's membership-registry by taking the list of people living in Norway and removing everyone who belong to another religious/similar order.
Hence, if you leave the church but don't sign up for, say, the Humanethical organization, you might end up back as a member of the church in a few years. Dark numbers yay!
[–]mintblue 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Not to be a nit picker but I believe you're misinterpreting the numbers:
32% of Norwegian citizens responded that "they believe there is a God" 47% answered that "they believe there is some sort of spirit or life force".
That's 79% believing in some form of spirituality.
Atheism means no spirituality, no anything outside of the literal boundaries of our three dimensional perception.
Yes I get it, the literal amount of people registered as being affiliated with a religious group is higher than the number of people who actually believe. Whatever, who cares about that? This is now talking about the survey that showed 79% believe in some kind of higher power.
[–]Meneth 10 points11 points12 points 9 months ago
Atheism is by definition the lack of belief in gods, not spirituality.
[–]hobophobe42 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Atheism means no spirituality
Buddhism is technically a atheistic religion, since they don't believe in any gods. Are you saying Buddhists are not spiritual?
Spirituality does not necessarily imply anything supernatural. Most organized religions try to insist that they have the monopoly on "true spirituality" but they are just being arrogant.
[–]mintblue 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
No, no not at all. I have always understood Atheism to mean no spirituality along with no God but yes one can argue it means only God. If that's the case I'm atheist, too, since I believe in a spiritual/supernatural existence alongside our own. If it's a God or not I have no idea and don't care.
Labels are limiting (point in case) and I'm sick of "Atheism fixes the world" propaganda as much as I am sick of "religion fixes the world" propaganda. Unless you directly represent body of faith outside of being a follower and I'm showing interest in those services, you can keep it to yourself.
Edit: Grammar.
[–]naullo 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Actually, the results come from this poll. I don't get why redditors always say that scandinavian countries are the most atheistic ones, when the country with the highest percentage of people who don't believe in a God or life force is actually France.
[–]joeymcflow 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
In Norway, every new born child (Wether he is to be babtised or not) is automatically registered with the state church. Religion is simply not a big enough issue here in Norway so that people actually care take a stand on it at all. So the "registered amount of atheists" in norway is far below the actual amount of people who percieve themselves as atheists.
I'm an hardcore atheists, i'm still registered with the state church.
I have one friend, out of a large friendbase (I work in the movie/music industry and as such, networking is a big part of my daily life) who actually go to church and percieve himself as a christian person. He is a drummer for a death metal band and he does drugs.
[–]naullo 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I'm not talking about the "registered amount of atheists", I'm talking about the results of a poll. Also I'm French and I don't know anyone who goes to church, I can't think of the last time I've met a Christian.

[–]upinflames 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
Let's remember one of the fundamental principles of statistics: "Correlation does not prove causation." Until there is any evidence that the atheism in Norway has anything to do with the benefits mentioned in this comic the argument has no merit.
[–]baalroo 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
But the argument the comic is making is a response to a fairly common statement that these particular problems are CAUSED by atheism. It's not arguing that Norway is great BECAUSE there are lots of atheists, but rather that it demonstrates that atheism does not CAUSE strife and anarchy like some religious folks claim.
I mean, I don't really wanna get into an argument here about it, the whole thing is really a bit of a strawman and the data they're using is clearly wrong. Just my $.02 or whatever.
[–]flcknzwrg 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
And what about the theist hypothesis that lack of belief causes societies to break down? Counter-evidence -> hypothesis wrong. Isn't that what the comic is about?

Personally, I prefer Finnish music, but I'd still move to Norway if the opportunity presented itself.
[–]darkresiak 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Hence the "some of," I greatly enjoy Swedish and Finnish music as well. I may look into going there, I'm tired of the bible belt here in the states, and the overall conservative mindset. I'm not saying I'm super liberal, I just hate the lack of separation between church and state.
[–]Gnome_Sane 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
4 million Norwegians can't be wrong!
[–]Bachmed 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Norway has trolls that smell christian blood
[–]Actual_Trees 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
Agnostic here---I fully support a separation between religion and state, but PLEASE don't make these outrageous assumptions that atheism is the cure to all evils.
Norway is high on the Global Peace Index list b/c it has a relatively homogeneous population---a characteristic that usually is responsible for lower crime rates and national unity.
Iceland, a similarly homogeneous country, is first on the 2011 GPI (only 16-23% of Icelanders are atheist/agnostic). Also high up on the GPI are Japan (65% atheist/agnostic) and Austria (18-26% atheist/agnostic), both of which have very homogeneous populations.
There is no correlation between the "atheist-ness" (I just made that a word) of a country and its GDP per capita. Proof: Vietnam (81% atheist/agnostic) --> GDP per capita= USD $3104. USA (3-9% (atheist/agnostic) --> GDP per capita= USD $46,860 (compare to Norway's $51,959)
Norway is a fantanstic country, but for reasons other than its predominantly atheist/agnostic population.

[–]Sloppy1sts 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Nowhere did the OP's comic say there was a correlation...he was just saying that Christians who think atheists are morally depraved heathens should take note that a mostly atheist country is doing better than the US in many ways.

"I'm not an atheist because atheism is a belief as well" -George Carlin
[–]baalroo 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Apparently, even Carlin says stupid shit sometimes
Do you have a source for this? I tried Google but none of the results actually had that quote.
You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. Joe Pesci. Two reasons; first of all, I think he's a good actor. Ok. To me, that counts. Second; he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't fuck around. Doesn't fuck around. In fact, Joe Pesci came through on a couple of things that God was having trouble with. For years I asked God to do something about my noisy neighbor with the barking dog. Joe Pesci straightened that cock-sucker out with one visit.
~ George Carlin, "You Are All Diseased"
[–]Alterstatedego 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
It was during his Larry King interview in 2001, try youtub
[–]mimunto 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
So Carlin had a different definition of atheism than most atheists - incl. Sam Harris, Dawkins and Hitchens. That doesn't mean he had a different view on religion. We don't believe any religion have delivered on their burden of proof, so we see no reason to believe in any of them, and it would surprise me if Carlin would have disagreed.
Btw, see this Carlin link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niqVVENiY2c

[–]stratoskjeks 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
I actually talked to a guy (Norwegian creationist, believe it or not) who thought, if I remember correctly, that the reason things have been going so well for Norway is because we have been acting according to God´s will, that we have been a good christian nation. Not saying it´s true, just that whether or not we are a christian nation depends on interpretation.
[–]ThunderbearIM 5 points6 points7 points 9 months ago
I've met a few of those Norwegian creationists, they've started to pile up lately. This I see as a problem.
[–]Macula 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Met one Norwegian creationist as well as a guy who thought that he could become Jesus by starting to live like Jesus. Did I mention that this was after a lecture in evolutionary psychology at a university? Have to admit it was fun watching them question everything the professor was presenting.
I would highly suggest that any Norwegian still member of the State Church fill in [this form](What you waiting for? Utmelding av statskirka and send it in, or hand it in at your local church office.
If you have friends and family who are not Lutherans, print out a copy for them as well.
It's important to show that there is little support for the state church and their funding is also partially dependent on number of followers. Together we can fight the state church!
[–]Farris2011 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Why should I fight them? Hva er poenget? Det du driver på med høres ut som forkynnelse. Bare at den er kjedelig
[–]EmblaDis 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
[–]Gdansk2010 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Interesting. Too bad a lot of the "facts" aren't true.
Japan has the highest life expectancy. Norway comes in 13th. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy
Norway's unemployment is 3.4%, not below 2%: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_unemployment_rate
The lack of belief in God, or spirit, or life force is only 17%, not 70%: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_atheism
Fail.
[–]rabbitchannel 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Did some searching around myself and it appears to be based on the Human Development Index (HDI) which is measured using life expectancy, literacy, unemployment, and SoL. Norway is #1 according to that standard.
A bit weird though considering life expectancy and literacy alone. Norway is actually ranked 40th in literacy.

[–]DavidBusk 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Pretty good, I'm rocking 40 Mbytes up and down. But for gaming it sucks because the distance between norway and the US makes the gaming experience bad for the one off-host.

Just got back from my first visit to Norway. After reading this I think I want to move there.
[–]hipstr_hop 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
That's all well and good, but I really hope you guys don't seriously think that Norway's prosperity is directly linked to its predominantly atheistic views or that America's problems are directly linked to its predominantly theistic religious views. I'd expect you all to be a bit more rational than that.
[–]The_Maddog 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago*
I have nothing but praise and jealousy for the people of Norway. Thats pretty much it. If I could live there I would. The Norweigans I've met are the nicest people you could wish to meet and the country itself has a system I'd honestly like to be part of given the chance. I hope the UK starts to follow suit.

Not to mention that Norway has some of the best natural beauty in Europe (as long as you go there in summer). My family have a summer house near the Jotunheim National Park, and it's glorious. My mum spends about half the year over there these days. There are claw marks in the airport metal detectors from the last time we tried to take her back home to Ireland.
And even the yokels who farm sheep up in the mountains are better educated than most of my friends here in LA. And more eloquent in English (otherwise I might have learned more Norwegian by now).
[–]Flatrock 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
As of late I've become extremely interested in the idea of living in Norway for a year or two. Advice?
[–]big_sexy_in_glasses 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago

[–]tcox72 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Perhaps wealth and prosperity lead to atheism and not the other way around.
[–]LadyViolet 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Ah, I am so proud to be Norwegian :)
[–]daskrip 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I'm not sure where this little kid is getting his information from, but he doesn't seem to be entirely correct. According to Wikipedia, Japan has the highest life expectancy, and Norway is 13th.. The kid said Norway has the highest life expectancy.
As for atheism percentage, the only stats I could find are from 2005: Wikipedia says that 32% of Norwegians believe in a god, and only 17% believe in neither a god, spirit or life force. I guess atheism is defined by believing in a god, so this matches up pretty closely to the kid's 70%.
[–]Pyromaniac605 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I'm fairly certain Japan has the highest life expectancy in the world, not Norway, but other than that, jolly good show.
[–]TheExtremistModerate 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I thought Japan was the most atheist county(Link is to book quoting somewhere between 64%-80% being atheists/agnostics/non-believers).

[–]ChirronT447 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Don't know if someone mentioned this already but according to the most recent Eurobarometer Poll in 2005. (see graph on page 9) [http://ec.europa.eu/public_opinion/archives/ebs/ebs_225_report_en.pdf]
Just thought it was worth pointing out. An Associate Professor of Sociology at Pitzer College called Phil Zuckerman estimates atheism rates in Norway range from 31 - 72%, based on various studies. Which is a fairly wide range
[–]aiiieeeee 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Redditors love to say "association does not equal causation". I think this applies here. but maybe i'm being too hard on the cartoon kid.
[–]solidiquis 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
And how exactly does atheism contribute to its second highest GDP per capita, unemployment rate, etc?
[–]cryo 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Causality wasn't implied, was it?
[–]uncutone 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
r/atheism--where science is law, and correlation ALWAYS implies causation.
[–]Daviddes90 -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 months ago
About 79.2% of Norwegians were members of the Church of Norway as of January 1, 2010 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norway#Religion
[–]Gommle 7 points8 points9 points 9 months ago
While true, that statistic is bullshit, since almost everyone is added automatically at birth.
[–]MrTimn 8 points9 points10 points 9 months ago
We have christian traditions and everyone is a member of the church from birth. Most people don't bother with actually making an effort of leaving. Doesn't change the fact that I've only met two people in my life that actually were christian. My grandmother and a priest.
[–]pgoetz 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Christians always get the last word in ... because they're just right -- their faith tells them so!
[–]littleimp 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
It's kinda cold and dark there though.
Yeah, right. The coastal city in northern norway where I live now enjoys more hours of sunshine and less precipitation than the city in central germany where I lived before. Granted, it's colder here, but never very cold. The eastern and northern US will be colder in winter.
[–]dietotaku 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
on the other hand, their lion and tiger populations are pretty abysmal.
That's because Finland has them all. LOOK OUT PERU

I work right next to this, and loads of tourist visit the station every summer. I wonder why?
[–]protendious 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
If I lived in Norway, the cartoon makes it sound like there should be a hell of a whole lot of other reasons for me to want to live there that would be way higher on the list than the majorly atheist population, just sayin.
Also because they've been brought up by their parents, schools and society as a whole to take care of one another. Something the unashamedly individualistic American Success culture will never allow for.

[–]oregeno 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Ah, another case of correlation /= causation. Norway's relative high quality of life has much more to do with geopolitics than a general apathy regarding religion. Consider the Czech Republic, a significantly more atheistic, yet it ranks much lower on QoL indices. The difference is, the CR has been smack dab in each of the middle of European wars of the last century, while Norway, and the other nations of the Scandinavian Peninsula, have been sheltered from them. Not to mention all that oil.
[–]Vengeful_Squid 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I studied abroad in Norway & have family friends in Tromsø. Miss that place so damn much. If only I could up and move, I would. Sigh...
[–]heylg 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Meh. I really don't like when people equate a high GDP, life expectancy, education, standard of living, low unemployment etc. with atheism. sure they're correlated, but is atheism the causation of all of these things? i don't really think so. btw, proud Atheist here. just sayin'.
[–]Farris2011 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Yeah... you obviously doesnt live in Norway. Or maybe you are a true Norwegian - a condescending prick who belittles everyone else. You know it - we all Norwegians do this.' We're the best in the world'. Say it - in a heavily accented voice. Yeah thats what you sound like.
