Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Whew, now I really want a cigarette!

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Protip: If you don't have a cigarette, just carry around a pack of gum. Most 10 year old kids would be more than willing to trade a few stogies for a pack of Beechnut gum.

[–]AmIKawaiiUguuu 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe a populace that feels the urge to carry around packs of cigs and gum are just living in a society where telecom mobile devices haven't been invented yet.

think of the unwashed troglodytes with their primitive brains thinking, "Heurrr me bored. Me not think what do. Me chew sticky sweet gum stuffs hurr"

Find some pictures of Times Square in the 70's, you'll really want an XXX show.

[–]Vitalstatistix 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So sad how they turned NYC/Times Square into such a lame G-rated version of itself over the past 20 years. I would have much preferred the XXX shows and vagrants, myself.

[–]zulubanshee 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It had a sort of low-life charm, but it was pretty dangerous.

[–]HeyItsMau 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So sad? Real life is not a place to play out your romantic, noir, fantasies. I don't care if Times Square turns into a candy-land made of gumdrops and smiles, the improvement is beneficial for everyone save for those with the misguided opinion that real New York should be an intimidating, gritty, and dangerous place. Your opinion is kinda selfish.

Photochrom prints aren't true-life color, but they're still amazing to look at.

[–]Fidena 29 points30 points ago

Unlike America, Britain gave up hats during WW2 due to supply shortages and they never really went back in to style.

America held onto hats until the early 60's.

You do realize that 5 years earlier - London was a pretty much a pile of rubble from German bombing right? I'm more surprised how clean it is and how buildings are actually standing.

[–]zogworth 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not so much, London wasn't really bombed after 1941 as forces were redirected to the eastern front, also improvements in airborne radar made the later bombing missions pretty costly.

[–]MantheDam 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, aside from the V1 and V2 rockets that kept hitting the city until pretty much the end of the war.

[–]d139nn 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

London was bombed heavily in the war, but it was never flattened. The East end docks took most of the bombs, and they are just one section of a massive city. I think the way the Blitz is portrayed is that the entire city was reduced to rubble and plucky little Brits muddle on and managed to thrive and prosper, but it is mainly good pr rather than fact (and looting, mugging and profiteering were rampant during the blitz). Everyone lived in fear, and the damage to the city was huge, but the majority of places were undamaged by bombing.

[–]deadgreystar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're pretty much the same now, the sandstone gets damaged by the chemicals that clean the soot off so a lot of Georgian and Victorian buildings in old cities are black or grey.

[–]Anon_is_a_Meme 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was only in the 1960's that the soot-blackened buildings started to be cleaned up.

I like studying these kind of images for rogue time travellers. Couldn't find any in this particular shot. They either had a good courier that day who had an authentic wardrobe facility available or 1949 London wasn't a popular destination. Probably all busy back looking at London 2088. Not far off tbh. Newer vehicles and advertising. Actually less cars, but many more buses and taxis. Less grainy respectable dirt and more fluffy, discarded takeaway food packaging dirt. Most of those buildings are still there practically the same. We realised that if the war hadn't destroyed it, it probably was worth keeping in authentic form. This is the same view in 1896: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/05/Piccadillycircus1896.gif

I love how you can tell it's Shaftsbury Avenue even after all these years...

It's incredible the changes that can happen in the span of a single lifetime. Makes me wonder what another few lifetimes will bring...

What is with all the digital noise in the picture? Surely a picture like this deserves a good quality scan...

Ah, I found a better version here: http://www.howtobearetronaut.com/2010/01/1940s-london-in-stunning-hig-resolution-colour/

Full screen and full zoom lets you actually see grain of the film. I suspect someone attempted to sharpen the original and added a lot of blur and digital noise as as result...

Genuinely no offense intended, but I wasn't that interested in your pic. What REALLY grabbed me was your username. RonaldRegansPenis? You just made my day.

It's shocking to see that some things never change (red double Decker buses)

The routemasters are no longer in service, and haven't been for a several years.

The only place in the UK that has a working fleet of them is Edinburgh now.

The classic Routemaster is still in use on the London Heritage Routes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Routemaster#London_heritage_routes.

There are some stored up here in Cambridgeshire. I presume the bus company is going to restore them. I would hope they're not just being left to rot in garage.

About all that's the same is the colour and number of decks. Those are the old routemaster buses, where the driver had his own compartment at the front, you got on at the back and a conductor took your money. Now you get on at the front and the driver does the conductor's job as well as his own.

Lots of people loved the routemaster, but it had a top speed of about 40mph, horrendous fuel consumption and a jerky, bumpy ride compared to a modern bus.
