No, Phillipe Halsman is the artist here. Dali is merely the model.

[–]GNG 13 points14 points ago

According to the wikipedia entry, Dali is also the title.

[–]Moofyman 61 points62 points ago

Glad this is the first post. Fuckin' assholes should have put Dali in the title.

Gérard de Nerval (19th century poet) did even better. He would walk his lobster in the streets of Paris.

[–]Flamingyak 0 points1 point ago

This kills the lobster...

The whole idea of this picture was by a social psychologist who theorized that if you took a picture of someone while they were jumping, there wouldn't be any way for them to resist their appearance, and from various physical cues their personality would naturally come through and could be analyzed. He also took pictures of Marilyn Monroe

Oh god, he chopped off her legs for this picture? Brutal.

[–]thedefiant 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

haha Dali actually became very mad about the cats in this photo which took very many shots to capture because the cats and the water was not to Dali's satisfaction. Between each individual shot the photographer's had to help clean up and dry off the cats before another could be taken.

[–]Amberleaf 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why? This is not Dali's work.

[–]Moofyman 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cause he's in the photo...

[–]Amberleaf 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But it's not his work.

Surely the photographer (Philippe Halsman) should have been put in the title?

Glad to see this being top rated. It was a pity OP neglected to note it was Dali's work.

[–]gder 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the link. I saw a print (at least I'm assuming it was a print and not the original) at the local museum. I remember laughing because they had the part about how it took 20-someodd attempts to get the picture. I had this image in my head of people throwing cats across the room along with buckets of water, over and over again, until they got the shot they wanted.

I got to see some high quality prints of Dante's Divine Comedy. The website doesn't do them any kind of justice.

Just curious OP, where did you the "1920's" bit from?

Did you just make it up or guess or something?

[–]AyChihuahua 2 points3 points ago

The picture is black and white, and Pablo Picasso looks about 40 in the picture, so I would say 1920 is a good guess. /s ಠ_ಠ

I just went to the muesem in st petersburg florida and saw this in real life!

Apparently there was a artist who said that it is impossable for someone to maintain their false persona when jumping, so dali challenged this...

BTW they had to take this picture around 27 times, which means those cats were thrown 27 times

It was so amazing in there. There was this splendid older lady giving a tour who had met him several times and her hat was an upside down black high heel and she was so passionate about his work. I learned a ton from her.

[–]minty421 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm interested in how he got the water to curve the way it does. I honestly can't imagine how the water is landing the way it is

[–]citat3962 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it was thrown underhand from a bucket..

Curve for the first part and momentum throws the rest straighter.

[–]Perk_i 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most likely the water was in a tub of some sort and it was tossed on an arc from the bottom left. You're seeing it still on the way up, not on the way back down. The change in arc at the bottom was most likely caused by the assistant pulling the tub back and out of the shot before all of the water had left it.

It's also possible there were shenanigans pulled with the negative before it was printed, possibly in an attempt to imitate Dali's paintings. Some of the other photos I've seen from Halsman are obviously manipulated in the darkroom.

[–]chemistry_teacher 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fast shutter, yes, but no chance at using a fast film wind to get many shots per second like they can today. The number of takes was simply enormous.

[–]addedpulp 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He original intended for a photo in which the cats would be killed in order to get the shot. The photographer said it was a poor choice, Dali asked why, and he said, "well, because the cats would have to die." Dali responded, "oh... yeah, I guess you're right," and they quickly changed the idea to this.

Just got back Saturday from visiting family near St. Petersburg Florida where the Dali Museum is located. There are hundreds of paintings and sketches, and audio tour headsets as well as live human being tours with their own unique interpretations. Also, the audio tour includes some "alternative" narrations by "Dali's mustache" which are really cute and funny.

His works are fascinating, especially when you look at them chronologically and see how he tries on various styles during his time at art school and finally develops the very detailed realism and surrealism of the works he is famous for.

I am so glad we went, but my feet were absolutely killing me by the time we were done. In the end, we basically skimmed the "alternate media" side with photographs, sculpture and short films because we were both foot-achy and starving. Set aside at least 3 hours if you want to see everything.
