Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I see no grammatical issues with the sign in the image. I do, however, find issues with the title of this post.

[–]dicatae[S] -3 points-2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are none, the title is a reference to Fight Club

Edited to clarify

[–]sonanz 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never seen Fight Club. I thought you were saying it was supposed to be "You're" on the sign instead of "your" which would be incorrect as the sign correctly uses "your". I suspect others are taking your title the same way.

[–]dicatae[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, I thought Fight Club was just one of those movies that everyone had seen. Wow!

Is there a way to edit my title?

[–]sonanz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think so, but you can always resubmit under a new title. The rules used to suggest it, but now everyone seems to have a cow when you do that.

[–]ianweller 0 points1 point ago

The spam filter also has a cow when you do that.

Yeah, I think I'll leave it as is. The majority of people here know what I'm talking about.

Having seen Fight Club several times, I still had to read this comment trail to know what the hell the title meant. Maybe I'm in the minority 'cause this seems to be doing quite well.

I totally know where that's at. I thought it was the other store off of W. Adams, but the Chick-fil-a gave it away.

Edit: There is a high school down the street from there and most of those kids can't dress themselves to save their lives. I feel this is aimed at them.

The fight club reference is a comment on materialism in our cultures. I'm thinking it has no direct connection to this particular image, but it got Fight Club fans (many redditors) to click on the link. Just a humorous title.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:U.S._incarceration_rate_by_race_2.gif When 5% of all black males in the United States are incarcerated and the gen pop is not allowed to use belts in prison, it turns into a statement for subversive culture. It's a fashion statement, that being said:

Barack Obama, speaking just prior to the 2008 US Presidential Election appeared on MTV and stated that laws banning the practice of wearing low-slung pants that expose one's underwear were "a waste of time". However, he did follow that up with the statement: "Having said that, brothers should pull up their pants. You are walking by your mother, your grandmother, your underwear is showing. What's wrong with that? Come on. Some people might not want to see your underwear. I’m one of them.

[–]starsspinningdizzy 0 points1 point ago

that's pretty presumptuous. I mean, some people are underwear models. surely an underwear model is bound to walk in at some point, and then what, doughnut shop? then what?

Everyone in my town talks breathlessly about Shipley donuts. It doesn’t make sense; they taste just like any other donut.

Also, I am a white school nerd and I sometimes wear the waistband peeking up in order to add a rebellious touch to an otherwise straitlaced outfit. But that’s not why I’m saying their donuts are mediocre.

Only if the number of urban youths willing to pay > than the number of everyone else who were willing to pay but won't because they were scared off by the large number of baggy pants wearing urban youths.

[–]T-Luv 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What is it about urban youths with baggy pants that makes them more scary than urban youth who wear pants that fit?

[–]Kronogor 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By wearing the uniform of your typical gang member you associate yourself with these unscrupulous people and anyone who sees you dressed like this will also make this connection, thus you are treated as a gang member until you actually talk with the scared individuals and they realize you just like looking stupid in public.

Also, if you wear pants that fit it speaks to you being more of a civilized and law-abiding individual. Whether this is true or not doesn't really matter here; pants down to ones knees looks thuggish and intimidating, while pants worn up and around the waist look welcoming and speak to being an upright citizen.

[–]T-Luv 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So if a gang member pulled their pants up, people suddenly aren't scary? That's absurd. I've met and seen quite a few gang members and people who consider themselves to be thugs, and most of them wear pants that fit. They wear ghetto clothing, but they don't sag their pants. I'm sure the people who are afraid of pants sagging gang members would be just as afraid of pants pulled up gang members.

[–]Kronogor 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Again, it is not the simple act of wearing baggy pants, please stop bringing this up because it is a stupid thought.

You seem to be on my side but just don't realize it. A gangster is a gangster no matter what he wears, but people who wear the attire of a gangster usually have the mannerisms of a gangster, something the shop owner is trying to avoid. So, he feels that if a "gangster" is willing to pull his pants up and respect the owners wishes then he is clearly a decent customer that the shop keeper wants. If the "gangster" instead sees the sign and says, "Fuck that shit" and enters anyway, doing his best to show off how thug he is, this clearly is a customer that makes everyone in the store uncomfortable and is undesirable.

Basically, this sign is a "Quality Control" for customers, are you civilized enough to put your hood persona on hold for a moment while you buy your diabetes circle or is it just too damn important that everyone knows how fucking badass you are, and that nobody tells you how to dress because you are fucking thug son.

That's what the sign says. That's the subject of this discussion.

[–]Kronogor 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No what the sign says is, "You guys who dress like thugs that keep coming in here and annoying my customers need to pull up your pants or you won't be allowed in, I write this sign knowing full well that you won't and so my sign will effectively prevent you from entering ever."

Basically, what this shop owner wants to put on his door is, "No Niggers" but obviously he can't, so this is his clever way around it.

Obviously it was an exaggeration, but so is saying that banning "urban youths" will hurt this guys doughnut sales.

On the other hand, if it is a big enough problem that this guy went through the effort to make a sign barring a certain type from coming in, maybe I was right and he is losing business from scared customers.

Don't be stupid, it is the complete persona that goes along with someone who would leave the house with his pants around his ankles. You don't just wear your pants low and get groceries, you assume a certain swag and mannerism to justify your fashion. In this case, it is that of a gang member. It has nothing to do with the actual "seeing of the underwear" but the behavior that goes along with it.

How sheltered are you? Come to my neighborhood (Hawaiian Gardens) and just drive around for a bit, perhaps stop at a few mom & pop fast food places and the answer to your question will be revealed to you tenfold.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is not directed at OP, but rather the owners of this "donut shop". You've lost me as a customer. And I don't even sag my pants. This whole thing teaches a pretty terrible lesson. hey kids, judge books by their covers! Urban youths of dark complexions aren't good enough for our coffee shops! Ok maybe that last line is a little hyperbolic. But seriously, this is how you lose business and probably not gain any. Except for that guy who's just thrilled he can drink his coffee where no urban youths might disturb him. And really, do you want that guy as a customer anyway? I thought this was supposed to be a hard economy. I don't want to hear this place bitching when it goes under.

[–]dicatae[S] 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's silly and I agree with all of that. I do understand though, I personally don't want to look at our people's undergarments, that being said, I firmly believe it's never my place or anyone's place for that matter to say how someone else should dress. This is so what's wrong with this country, didn't we learn in kindergarten to mind our own business? And this applies to everything it seem these days. Who people marry, i.e. interracial, same sex, the color of our skin, our sex, our creed, our weight, our age, and how we dress. Unfortunately that's society and there's probably no change on the horizon. Misery loves company.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Too true. I think for me the issue is this, if the exposure of an item traditionally worn as an "under garment" has become the norm in a certain historically determined style of dress, I do not see how it can still be called an "undergarment". It has become part of the exterior ensemble. Also, people unfamiliar with this style fail to realize that there's usually another pair of basketball or warm up shorts between the sagged pants and boxers which ride up on the hips like pants are normally worn. I believe it is a function of the difficulty of keeping sagged pants aloft, necessitating something to beef up the hip diameter to meet the waistline of the jeans.

[–]dicatae[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm just silly lol, for me, my thought process is this, pants, underwear, penis. I can't help it, it's just where my mind goes. And I don't want to think about the majority of the penis' I do hahaha.

Yeah, I'm sure they turn away paying customers for wearing low-riding pants. I'll bet money they wouldn't turn down a girl who was sporting a whale tail.
