The Garden District in New Orleans is the most beautiful part of any city I've seen in the U.S.

We're spoiled here in New Orleans. I just woke up, it's fucking gorgeous outside, I think I'm going to go take the streetcar down St. Charles to a bar and have a po' boy and cheer on my Saints. I freakin' love this city.

r/neworleans shameless plug!

If you're looking for chicory coffee, they have it and they ship. I am an admitted addict and I stop by the Community in my office daily.

When I look at that picture, I feel as if I am right back home in New Orleans. It's such a beautiful spot to go past every day. I went to college in New Orleans and lived a block off St. Charles. Drove, walked, or rode the street car by that house for years.

Well, more like tripped by it. All the beautiful vegetation takes over the sidewalks making it impossible to find a stable surface for walking or jogging. It's just mean.

[–]techmaster242 5 points6 points ago

How about along the streetcar tracks on the neutral ground? Or in Audubon?

Listening to the streetcar rumbling down St Charles on my porch right now, enjoying a NOLA Blonde as we speak. Ahhh. Life is good.

Just the Garden District, let's be honest.

[–]Theropissed 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been there during Mardi Gras, it's confusing to someone who doesn't know where they're going and is driving everywhere. Especially when they have a hotel across the lake. (Protip: Don't ever ever ever ever go on the bridge at night, it's fucking spooky and you will end up in the fifth fucking dimension of hell. Holy shit is it dark.)

It's a great city, but just take the tour.

[–]theholyllama 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i would never go there during mardi gras. went on a random weekend. bourbon st was crazy.

mardi gras i would guess is way to chaotic and crowded and a clusterfuck.

[–]Theropissed 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It really is, we tried to navigate it but it was odd. We ended up in the "black ghetto" section of it. Apparently during Mardi Gras it's not a mix of people, especially downtown. Rather each ethnic group seems to stick together in the large crowds. So there was inner-city black crowd taking up a few blocks, then it was the somewhat middle class white crowd, and then the latino crowd. All seperated.

edit: The crowds were waiting for the Parade, not exactly where you would go to party for mardi gras.

[–]BornToLose 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have never witnessed such a thing. I've always seen a somewhat homogeneous mix, there will be groups of people sticking together but segregated?

[–]Tom504 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree, it's not as segregated as he makes it sound. If you are near a black neighborhood it'll be mostly blacks and vice versa for white neighborhoods, but it's almost never entirely one or the other.

[–]calebh70118 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Meh, I and a few friends have been the only white kids within a few blocks for Zulu. We felt a little out of place, but never like we simply weren't welcome. We got lots of coconuts.

Also, it's possible Theropissed stumbled across one of the Indian gatherings. Those tend to be more black and in poorer neighborhoods. And if that was the case, I'd say get the fuck out of the car and go check it out. They're freaking awesome.

[–]Theropissed 1 point2 points ago

[–]SomeDaysAreThroAways 2 points3 points ago

3 good photos per roll is a really good ratio for a photographer. Assuming rolls of 24, that means you take 1 in 8 shots that are good. I typically am only satisfied with 1 in 50 shots that I take.

[–]BCSteve 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel like the HDR is frying my eyes. WOW, that's possibly the worst over-doing of HDR I've ever seen.

Like this one and this one. Also this. And wow, this one. So many halos....

I almost feel bad critiquing the guy, he's obviously an amateur, but someone needs to tell him to ease off of the HDR...

I dunno, New Orleans really is a pretty dirty place.

[–]unusedalias 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really old places are usually pretty dirty. I think the city does a pretty good job cleaning up considering it gets trashed much worse than other cities every Mardi Gras or major sporting event/holiday.

[–]Puranto23 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Our city is fucking spotless after Mardi Gras considering all the shit it can generate. No idea how they do it.

[–]Vinin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's probably because there is a ton of prison labour that comes in to clean it. Check out after the parade routes are done, and you will see plenty of street cleaners in orange jumpsuits.

[–]cbpickl 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a part of it but a lot of it is contracted labor. They have a great system for getting things clean after Mardi Gras. These giant pressure washing machines that roll down and hose the streets and adjoining men with their own pressure washers that walk along with it. After that, they load the street cleaners with soap and the streets are good and sudsy for a minute, then they come down with hoses again.

[–]fejai 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Something to note, dust on your lens rarely (if ever) shows up in photos. The light bending through the lens will move around the dust on it/inside of it. If you have large chunks on the rear element, those might show. You will get areas of low contrast, but nothing like the straight light being blocked by dust on a sensor. Something to check out. And another.

[–]RomanSionis 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. Any "professional" photographer needs to know how to clean his sensor. Aside from the HDR, that was the first thing I noticed.

Fun fact: 1/3rd-7/8ths of the people in any picture in New Orleans are drunk, depending on the time of day.

You should try working in the French Quarter. I will be lugging computer equipment down the street anytime for work (even at like 8 AM) and the majority of people around me will have drinks in hands hanging out. Most of them are tourists, but it's funny how it is just expected and accepted here. The bonus is when I'm off of work, I'm instantly on vacation. It really is fun living here.

[–]unusedalias 2 points3 points ago

That would be cool, but where would it go? That is always a major concern in NOLA. Without the ability to really put things underground, it sure makes planning infrastructure hard.

[–]modern_dillema 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was on one of those once. It went from empty, to extremely crowded in just a few stops. I am so glad that I had an aisle seat so that man could, on every clickety clack sway of the train, assault my shoulder and arms by gently pressing his genitals into them.

[–]graymonster 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The last time I took the streetcar was Halloween. The streetcar was an absolute shit show. No one put their junk on my arm but I heard two fascinatingly vapid conversations. On the way down, I heard this drunk girl yelling about dicks and euphisms for dicks. On the return trip I heard this hick trying to get with this girl by telling her how he was from Missouri and that "only faggots ski, I snowboard."

Nice picture, but this looks much more wholesome than some of my memories of riding on the streetcar as an undergrad in New Orleans.

Most of the time it was drunk tourists, or the streetcar hitting actual cars. The most awkward was the man who was clearly masturbating one night.

When I was in 8th grade, we were on a bus in New Orleans and some homeless man was fapping on one of those streetcars. The 8th grade girls in my class were horrified.

Beautiful photo! However, it's incredibly misleading as to the actual speed of the streetcar. My grandma can walk faster than that fucker rolls.

TIL Americans call trams "Streetcars" ...isn't that kind of redundant? I don't know of many cars that don't drive on streets.

[–]unusedalias 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a NOLA thing. Not everywhere in the US calls them that. There is a lot of history attached to the streetcars in New Orleans. We also call the medians "neutral grounds". We are a unique city in every aspect, so pardon the redundancy and odd name.

[–]Vitalstatistix 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The uniqueness makes us awesome.

[–]shawnaroo 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're not called streetcars everywhere, it varies by region/city.

And actually for vast majority of their runs, the current streetcars lines in New Orleans don't actually ride in the street, but rather in the extra wide medians, referred to here as the "Neutral Ground".

[–]josh2992 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Here in Melbourne they do that as well, but it is more of a 50% split between that and just riding on tracks in the middle of the road.

Okay guys tip of my tongue: This pic reminds me of (I think) was a story where the narrator or someone in the story wonders if people "nowadays" remember what flowers even look like anymore. Saying something like flowers to them are now blurs of a certain type and color. Trees are also, to them, a different kind of blur and so on. I think he or she was sort of wondering what happened to humanity and why things like nature are no longer appreciated.
Might be a movie but I sorta want to say it was a book or TV show... Shit's driving me nuts right now.

This image would be borderline unbelievable if there wasn't so much motion blur on the right side. As beautiful as the concept, composition, and contrast are, this looks like a failure with a more perfect twin somewhere else on the negative strip.
