Captain Underpants is the 13th most banned/challenged book of the past decade. No joke. http://www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/banned/frequentlychallenged/challengedbydecade/2000_2009/index.cfm What has the world come to?

[–]noonelikesrejection 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow, that list is ridiculous.

This book helped get my little brother interested in reading, surely that's the main thing? Sure, the humour is childish in the extreme, but it's a children's book...

All the more reason why it's AWESOME.

[–]Wakamezake 25 points26 points ago

I have no idea what you mean but here's something related.

I borrowed a book from library after few pages there was a handwritten note "Place your finger here and turn to page 86" pointing to smudge above. I did. On page 86 i was informed that my finger is touching his booger.

[–]Bladewing10 4 points5 points ago

I totally forgot about this series! Although I've never read the final one, I know exactly what book I'll be getting this week. Haddix had quite a few other good books too, like Turnabout and Running Out of Time....I kinda miss grade school now.

[–]OldGobbo 2 points3 points ago

Stephen Gammell is still alive, but I'd be afraid to ask for an autograph, as I'm pretty sure there's something seriously wrong (nonetheless awesome) in his head.

[–]midnightsnacks 12 points13 points ago

I loved Scholastic book orders. I would order a book and just be so excited when the scholastic box came into the class room. Aw yeah, those were the days.

[–]tendoman 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really, its all about the Berenstain Bears. I feel the height of the Scholastic Book Club was the mid to late 80's. My favorite part of Elementary school..

[–]zitsel 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Now I know what that is.

Are we really that old or is everyone else here really that young? I sure as hell never read anything called "Captain Underpants".

[–]Spore124 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In 1st grade, one of my classmates had a father who worked at Scholastic who one day brought a bag of Scholastic books to the class and let every student pick and keep one. You can bet your ass I jumped on Captain Underpants the moment I saw it.

[–]legoman_86 49 points50 points ago

[–]birkoph 11 points12 points ago

We were too poor to afford anything, so I just bought the 0.99 book mark. sign :(

[–]sadhandjobs 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I get kids to pick out books for the library if I think they can't afford a book they want. We're quiet about it--it's our secret, they get an enormous kick out of it, and they get to read what they were wanting.

Edit: I'm a school librarian, and just finished up my fall book fair.

[–]HungryMoblin 12 points13 points ago

HOLY FUCKING SHIT I REMEMBER THIS BOOK. We had a reading list thing at school where we had to keep track of all the chapters of each book we read and we got a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut once we met a quota, and I remember feeling so clever marking down that I had read that one chapter that I think was called "The Shortest Chapter Ever" or something like that that contained all of like 3 words ("And they did" or something I think).

The only book I bought from Scholastic Book Fair was a book about WW2. Had to do with some kids and what they had to do to get food in the ghetto, if I remember correctly.

[edit]

Took a shit ton of random google searches, but I found it. I remember really liking this book.

Those book fairs are what introduced me to Calvin and Hobbes in elementary school. So good.

I've gotten close to $1,000 in books and supplies for my library from the two Scholastic Book Fairs I've had so far--and every book from the fair that's gone into the collection has been chosen by a kid. I get such a librarianboner from the book fair!

These things have become toy catalogues lately. Kinda sad.

There are books, but the ones the kids want all come with toys or some other gimmicky add on.

I wonder who scholastic blows to keep their stranglehold on the book order world.

I ALWAYS looked forward to the scholastic book catalogues, i'd circle things i wanted then ask and beg my parents. I usually got a couple books, my favorite series was Magic Tree House. Then whoever got the most books or things in class was the coolest that day. I miss those days.

I'm sure I'm a bit older than your typical redditor, but I was more partial to Bunnicula & those awesome dinosaur pop-up books. The saddest day of my childhood was the day I forgot to bring my scholastic form into school (on the last day available) and missed out on books for that year.

My mum bought me Captain Underpants for my 11th birthday and because I didn't want to make her feel bad I started reading it at school. I remember my teacher asking me if I thought that was an appropriate book to be reading at a grammar school.

Is it at all sad that I made a Captain Underpants rip off when I was younger. It was called Mr Weasel and it had me and my friend Sachin as a replacement for George and Harold

Remember when the principal went crazy and made the kids change their names? My friends and I all picked our own names off those charts and referred to each other as such for the rest of 5th grade.

I work in an office building that also houses a Scholastic Books (corporate?) office. They hold a Scholastic Book Fair every quarter for all the adults in the building. Everyone in our building goes nuts for it.

I would say one third of the items available are for children/young adults (toys, books, puzzles), another third are 'As Seen on TV' items and similar products (think a 4 foot ShamWow), and the last third are adult books (mostly romance, Chicken Soup for the soul crap, and cook books). They do also keep a pretty large (for a book fair, anyhow) amount of locally oriented books (fun and/or historical books about my state, information on ghost towns, etc).

And yes, they have a ton of Captain Underpants available.

OHHH YEESSSS!!!! I fucking loved those book fairs. I remember when i was little...(obnoxious-story-you-don't-care-about-time) My mom, 2 sisters, and I went to one of those. We were running pretty late an we were the last ones to come in. Every time they had one, they let people put their names into a little raffle-box. So when My 2 siblings and I put our names in, the slips were on top of the pile. So, when it came time to hear the results...THE DUDE DIDN't EVEN SHUFFLE THEM!!! So he called off all 3 of our names. Bam: 60% off. Bam: free 50$ in books. Bam: and the best for me...grab whatever you can within 5 minutes. So I grabbed a shit ton of books that i still have today. Captain underpants, Those hotdog scary stories, The House of the Scorpion (still one of my favorite books), and probably 100s more books.

TL;DR: Got lucky as a kid and got a 5min book spree that changed my life.

I never read those books, but I do remember my grade school librarian chastising kids for buying them at book fairs. She would say "Oh don't buy that. Here, take a look at these Newberry Award winners instead."

She tried that crap on me when I wanted to buy a UFO book once. I looked at the Newberry shelf, walked away after 10 seconds, and bought the UFO book. She rolled her eyes at me.

Bitch.

(About the Captain Underpants books, not the book fairs. But I suppose the same is true for both.)
