You say NEW tattoo, but it sounds like your FIRST. Wrong?

If you are THAT paranoid, find a place with a waiting list. It will give you time to be sure what you want (probably a small deposit req'd) and give you some piece of mind, 'cause there arent a lot of people who wait in line for a month or so for crappy artists.

If it IS your first..(good rules of thumb in any case, but extra important to note if you are new) ..ask to see the prospective artists' work, check to see how good they are with realistic stuff (sometimes you want to leave a little wiggle room, margin for error, cause few artists can pull off "perfect" work, any true artist will find SOME flaw with what they've done, haha) and you might want to think about giving the artist some artistic license because they will be more passionate about something creative (and often subsequently more cautious and detailed) instead a picture of a pegasus/unicorn, etc. and see if the other artists have let the prospective artist tattoo them. Also, you may think you can sit in the chair all day to get it done in one sitting, and that MAY be, but don't expect the artist to be able to tattoo you for long periods, especially if your desire for consistent, quality work is high.

Good luck, but I think you're more worried than you need to be. I'm sure I'm taking this post more seriously than it was intended ;) But hey, my advice on this is good for anyone thinking about a tattoo nonetheless.

Don't forget to tip handsomely, it's expected.

To be fair, if someone did that to me, I would be afraid of getting another tattoo as well.
