Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Since I can see this derailing into political bashing, I need to ask a question.

As an Australian I mostly see American politics from the retarded spews of Youtube and satire of XKCD.

Why is Ron Paul considered so awesome/batshit? They say his voting record is in line with the constitution, but the other side seems to think he's some crazy loon.

So reddit, what is good and bad about him? Parsing information regarding American politics is really hard.

EDIT: Jesus shit, you guys assume extremes for both cases. On one side he's some dude that will ensure the rights of everyone, ensuring the big government cant make blanket laws RUINING EVERYTHING. The other side sees his idea of strengthened and localised government as being ANARCHY AND SLAVERY.

[–]NewShinyCD 41 points42 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Good - he votes in line with what he actually believes in.

Bad - he wants to dismantle pretty much every single federal department and let the states deal with that stuff on their own. He also wants to rid us of the dollar and go back on the gold standard.

[–]FuriousJ 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, that's a good description. Ron Paul seems to be the only guy actually telling us what he'd do if he became president. Everyone else would just do whatever they wanted regardless of the platform they ran on (see: Every other president), but Ron Paul seems like he's on the level. Unfortunately the level is pretty extreme and crazy.

[–]teganyavo 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

this is a pretty popular myth in America, that a strong state government means that state is going to go back to slavery. In reality, the makeup of that state's government would depend largely on what you and your peers do as citizens. Local governments are more accountable to their local constituency, and that is Ron Paul's goal--a more represented population. At the moment I'm not feeling very fucking represented, so I think he's going to have to get my vote regardless of the crazy.

im pretty sure you don't have to worry about getting your yoke, unless you're caught with a bale of marijuana or something similar and put into one of our fine for-profit slave camps

[–]MixMixBrad 7 points8 points ago

[–]avfc41 1 point2 points ago

[–]dude187 6 points7 points ago

he wants to dismantle pretty much every single federal department and let the states deal with that stuff on their own.

That's a bad thing? I sure hope you don't complain about the lack of accountability of congress and the White House, and you definitely can't complain about the fact that congress does not vote in line with the people they represent.

The lack of accountability and failure to represent the common citizen is exactly caused by just how separated the federal government is from the average citizen. The federal government was created to govern the states not the people, and the reason we see them merely governing (more like doing favors for) corporations is caused solely due to this large divide in influence. Corporations are the only entities that can compete with the states themselves in the amount of money and power they have to influence the federal government.

We the people have little voice on a federal level, which is why we need to bring the power back to the states.

[–]goodbible 3 points4 points ago

That's fine, just the economic policies he wants (gold standard) will screw us more than Obama. My ass hurts already.

[–]dude187 -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While I don't believe a switch to the gold standard would actually occur if he were to be president, I also do not believe much would change monetary policy wise either way if it were to occur. In what way do you disagree?

[–]Boromm 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Tying your currency to a gold standard tends to have a deflationary effect on modern economies. So your monetary policies have to constantly factor in the deflationary aspect which makes keeping other things on an even keel more difficult.

Also, there simply isn't enough gold in the world to have a real gold standard anymore.

[–]BiscuitHammer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Look, he isn't wrong about that. But his solution is pretty reactionary. I'll just be curious to see how getting rid of the EPA helps out with governmental accountability.

[–]NihilisticAbandon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And that's bad, how?

[–]rasputin777 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He doesn't want to get rid of the dollar. He wants it to be tied to the value of something real, in this case gold. Also; believing that states are the ultimate deciders of their own way is something called Federalism, and the 10th amendment makes it the structure we are supposed to already have. He's not a loon, he wants to stick with the laws we're supposed to already be following...

[–]BrainInAJar 2 points3 points ago

Shiny rocks are as real as debt. The gold standard is just as bullshit as fiat currency

[–]itsanewoneyeah 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

? It's a placeholder for value... Gold isn't practical to synthesize, and is incredibly rare for one, being made only in a supernova. Then it can be pulled into a microfilament with a myriad of laboratory uses. It's a fucking awesome conductor, and doesn't corrode, ever. People want this shit, like, everybody can do something with it. That's why it's valuable. Money is valuable because it used to be equated with gold, and by proxy became equated with the value of other shit that people want. So yeah... digest...

[–]BrainInAJar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People want this shit, like, everybody can do something with it.

Gold isn't worth >$1700/oz because it makes a decent conductor and is somewhat rare. It's valuable because we all agree it's valuable. In that way it's no different from shells or bits of green paper

[–]itsanewoneyeah -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, it's inflated because of the effect of fiat currency, but it is different from it.
(shells are quite useful, though not so much as gold.)

Federalism is the concept of shared power between the states and federal government, not dominance of the former or latter. Don't forget that national sovereignty is also a crucial part of the Constitution.

[–]rasputin777 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The tenth amendment: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

This directly codifies primacy of the states. Yes, it's shared, but the individual states have the power by default.

[–]airhuff 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Look up the national supremacy clause. And stop bugging me, this shit was 5 days ago.

[–]rasputin777 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The supremacy clause only authorizes this when dealing with powers specifically granted by the US Constitution. So yes, that's fine, but adds nothing to the discussion.

[–]airhuff 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Need I repeat: 5 days ago. I'm sure there are plenty of new threads to argue on. I'm not responding again.

[–]rasputin777 -1 points0 points ago

That seems pretty arbitrary. But I would be reluctant to respond also if I had completely misunderstand a basic part of the US constitution as well.

[–]Desinis 0 points1 point ago

How are either of those a bad thing? You forget how the Constitution was written, and he's trying to put value back into the dollar, because the way it is now is terrible.

Ron Paul is one of the few politicians on capitol hill that very, very clearly and publicly sticks to his guns on his issues, and I respect him tremendously for that. He is deeply and systematically honest, uncynical and forthright in his views.

It just so happens, unfortunately, that his views are utterly insane. He basically wants to dismantle the federal government, and say what you will about that, I like having roads and a post office, much less some modicum of public healthcare, federal education funding, energy regulation, mining regulation, securities regulation, banking regulation and federal criminal enforcement. The problem is that all of these departments, currently, are deeply flawed and have serious problems. The solution, however, is taking a long hard look at how to fix them, not just to eliminate them completely, which is what Ron Paul wants to do. Eliminate all of that. All. In its entirety.

That, and he has some pretty crazy christian stuff going on too. He very publicly has stated he doesn't believe in evolution and, despite being an OBGYN, he is pro-life.

So, all that adds up to a deeply problematic candidate. I can say that I am happy to have him in congress and I would love to have him as a neighbor or a colleague, but I would never vote for him. I understand, however, why a lot of people would, and I think he is a fine voice to have in the congress... but I would be rather displeased to see him in an office higher than that, such as a senatorship, governorship, and especially the presidency.

[–]dude187 8 points9 points ago

Scumbag anti-Ron Paul redditor:

Complains about Ron Paul for wanting to eliminate federal programs outside of the scope of power the constitution defines for the federal government.
Starts off with two examples of federal programs extremely well defined as being within the role of the federal government by the constitution.

[–]NihilisticAbandon 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People are just confused little retards thinking their their flawed beliefs are somehow enlightened. He misrepresents Ron Paul while insulting him and then says he's glad people like Ron Paul are in congress. So sickening :/

[–]lawstudent2 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I laughed out loud at this, you totally got me on that.

However, to be technical, there is also a constitutional mandate for banking regulation:

To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures;

And combining that with this:

The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States;

And this:

To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;

You have actually rather broad congressional mandate. While con law is not my strong suit, I do know the history of commerce clause federalism pretty well, and, honestly, pretty much everything I listed fits, unproblematically, within the scope of these clauses.

[–]otm_shank 1 point2 points ago

Ron Paul thinks the state's have the right to outlaw abortion without the federal government getting involved. He would have voted against the Civil Rights Act because it violates his state's rights philosophy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

[–]TheCid 7 points8 points ago

Ron Paul does not stand for individual liberty, and I'm fucking sick and tired of morons on the internet promoting that bullshit lie.

He stands for the old Southern view of states' rights -- which runs directly fucking counter to individual liberty.

If Ron Paul got his way, states would be immune to Supreme Court oversight on cases regarding things such the first fucking clause in the First Amendment, the right to privacy, and laws regarding equal rights based on sexual orientation.

Ron Paul is such a fucking champion for individual rights that he wrote a bill that would give states the ability to take individual rights away. You can't even call him consistent - his bill specifically targets only those issues that the religious right has gone apeshit over.

If he was really all about promoting states' rights over the federal government his bill would have also stripped SCOTUS oversight of "lefty" disputed things like state-level gun laws. But it didn't. It focused only on those things the Right wants to violate the Constitution with.

Why? Because what he really cares about is keeping far-right religious bullshit enshrined in law in as many places as possible for as long as possible.

[–]pogeymanz 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You hit on one of the points that I find the most incredible among rabid Ron Paul supporters (granted, there are people who support him who aren't "rabid").

He doesn't want the federal government to take away individual liberties, but if a state does it, that's peachy with him. What the fuck?

[–]NihilisticAbandon 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Shit, man, then we might as have world government, because if one country has bad policies then we should just have everyone live under one world government where everyone has to follow our moral principles. Right?

Same deal: let local communities decide what to do. We don't need a faraway king micromanaging everything.

People like you and TheCid -- I'm trying not to be rude or insulting, but it honestly comes across it from my experience -- are basically like whores who have been broken down their pimps into being submissive. The fuck? People need to learn to mind their own business and try to make their own local communities better places, not Alabama's or Oregon's. For fuck's sake, the world isn't perfect nor will it ever be, you're not going to make everyone a good person thru centralized government.

[–]BrainInAJar 5 points6 points ago

[–]comradesean 2 points3 points ago

If people can't get along with each other on reddit then what makes you think people will get along with each other globally?

[–]BrainInAJar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People can't even get along in one city. Government isn't about making people get along, it's about giving some order so that when we don't get along we can resolve our differences as amicably as possible.

[–]comradesean 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Breaking it down, government is just imposing your will upon other people. The larger the government, the larger and more varied the people. The bigger a gap there is between the minority and the majority. Why do you think people retreat to their own sub-reddits for discussions? No one actually enjoys feeling like a minority. No one enjoys being told what to do and believe by people who don't understand them or where they come from.

Government isn't actually about resolving differences. It's about making something the norm so that whoever isn't part of the norm must either adapt or become a criminal.

Then again that's more likely because of politics than government, but unfortunately government and politics are pretty much one and same thing nowadays.

[–]NihilisticAbandon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

On a philosophic level, it implies that there is some sort of elite person or committee that can solve all of the worlds problems, and that people need to be taken care of.

Either way, do we even really need it? Some people in power are definitely for it -- probably well meaning from cynicism on the stupidity of the masses -- but large structures usually carry a lot of dead weight and leeches.

[–]SonsOfLiberty86 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When did Ron Paul say it's ok for states to take away individual liberties?

Ron Paul didn't say that. He said the federal government has no right to tell states what laws they can pass

If a state wants to pass a law, that's a state passing a law - not Ron Paul

To blame Ron Paul for laws that are passed in states would be like blaming Obama for SB1070

And what specific individual liberties are you referring to? Abortion?

What about prostitution? Is it wrong for 49 states to say it is illegal, but Nevada to allow it?

Should all states be forced to follow Nevadas law?

Your logic on how all states should all have the same liberties is slightly flawed, because it asserts that all states actually should have the same exact laws

[–]SonsOfLiberty86 1 point2 points ago

Ron Paul stands for more liberty than any other presidential candidate, and to deny that is to just push the anti-Paul propaganda campaign fueled by the media. You are playing into exactly what they want you to believe

Ron Paul stands for more liberty than any other presidential candidate

No. Paul stands for letting the state I live in dictate which of my Constitutional rights actually mean something.

[–]rhonek 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sorry, but no.

The constitution is the supreme law of the land. It enumerates what your inalienable (<- look up the definition of that word) rights are as a human being. No branch or level of government can justifiably take those away and remain in harmony with the constitution. The federal government is granted specific powers to preside over certain responsibilities. Whatever responsibilities they weren't given should then be officiated at the state level. None of that should have anything to do with challenging inalienable right.

I see many saying that their local governments are completely inept. That's where the beauty of the original system came into play. As a citizen you're supposed to be worried about the local system first. Your responsibility should be to family and community first. The idea that Washington can pass a law that is in the best interest of everyone down to the community and family levels is ludicrous.

Ron Paul is only advocating a return to solid principles, proper presiding authority, and a strong, tangible currency.

Taking away SCOTUS oversight of the states on certain constitutional issues essentially gives them free rein to violate those parts of the constitution with impunity.

Ron Paul wrote a bill to do exactly that.

Written by Lew Rockwell.

[–]BoogerPresley 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most likely, But Paul's never admitted that and Rockwell denies it. If it had been a single issue I'd cut Ron Paul some slack, but there were multiples and Ron Paul didn't really come clean about it until forced to.

Back in 1996, Paul narrowly eked out a congressional victory over Democrat Lefty Morris, who made the newsletters one of his main campaign issues, damning them both for their racial content and for their advocacy of drug legalization. At the time, Paul defended the statements that appeared under his name, claiming that they expressed his "philosophical differences" with Democrats and had been "taken out of context." He finally disavowed them in a 2001 interview with Texas Monthly, explaining that his campaign staff had convinced him at the time that it would be too "confusing" to attribute them to a ghostwriter.

In short: Ron Paul sent out several newsletters under his name as congressman in the mid-eighties that were highly racist/offensive, he didn't repudiate them until much later, and he said that he was responsible for writing them until they became too much of a liability, at which point he basically said "someone else did it" and would not name who that was.

I don't see why Ron Paul should throw Rockwell under the bus. They're still friends and I assume they personally settled the matter. People use this sort of nonsense as political mudslinging and it makes sense to try to ignore it.

The writings aren't even THAT bad to begin with. They come across as Lew Rockwell being grumpy, haha.

The whole deal is really not even an important issue, and busy congressmen typically employ ghostwriters because they don't have the time to write every single letter. Some of the stuff could've been more tasteful, yes, but honestly, it's pretty clear that Ron Paul isn't a racist or anything like that, so it's dumb to dwell on this subject.

[–]BoogerPresley 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm just going to quote directly from the Report, I find it more than "grumpy":

Regardless of what the media tell us, most white Americans are not going to believe that they are at fault for what blacks have done to cities across America. The professional blacks may have cowed the elites, but good sense survives at the grass roots. Many more are going to have difficultly avoiding the belief that our country is being destroyed by a group of actual and potential terrorists -- and they can be identified by the color of their skin. This conclusion may not be entirely fair, but it is, for many, entirely unavoidable.

Indeed, it is shocking to consider the uniformity of opinion among blacks in this country. Opinion polls consistently show that only about 5% of blacks have sensible political opinions, i.e. support the free market, individual liberty, and the end of welfare and affirmative action.... Given the inefficiencies of what D.C. laughingly calls the "criminal justice system," I think we can safely assume that 95% of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal.

If similar in-depth studies were conducted in other major cities, who doubts that similar results would be produced? We are constantly told that it is evil to be afraid of black men, but it is hardly irrational. Black men commit murders, rapes, robberies, muggings, and burglaries all out of proportion to their numbers.

Perhaps the L.A. experience should not be surprising. The riots, burning, looting, and murders are only a continuation of 30 years of racial politics. The looting in L.A. was the welfare state without the voting booth. The elite have sent one message to black America for 30 years: you are entitled to something for nothing. That's what blacks got on the streets of L.A. for three days in April. Only they didn't ask their Congressmen to arrange the transfer.

[–]NihilisticAbandon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, that's pretty much racist. But Ron Paul doesn't believe that shit, so it's pointless to dwell on it.

[–]NihilisticAbandon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, think of it this way: the only bad things Ron Paul has really been associated with are those news letters. There's nowhere else to suggest that Ron Paul is a bigot or any such things.
