Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

The mother of all reposts. It's been reposted again and again since 1826.

I wish our pizzas are still as big as those in 1826 though.

There isn't anything in ancient texts saying it wasn't Chewbacca...but most likely, it was aliens.

[–]evildoppleganger 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Makes sense if you think about it. For a primitive photo light is transferred onto a photosensitive paper or glass. For a primitive sound recording the audio needs to be transformed into an etching or texture that can be read by something vibrating against it.

So light to light vs sound to texture.

View from the Window at Le Gras (La cour du domaine du Gras) was the first successful permanent photograph, created by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826 at Saint-Loup-de-Varennes.

Nicéphore Niépce captured the photo with a camera obscura focused onto a sheet of 20 × 25 cm oil-treated bitumen. As a result of the 8-hour exposure, sunlight illuminates the buildings on both sides.

[–]yeeaah 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is not the first picture ever taken photograph, not even the the first successful permanent photograph, just the oldest preserved one. Niépce was experimenting with "photography" long before 1826 but he vas unable to fixate the image and the photographs quickly faded. The first successfully fixated image was made in 1824 but Niépce dropped and because it was on glass sheet, it shattered into pieces. And this (http://imgur.com/1UCJA) is the actual heliography.

I present to you, "Boulevard du Temple", taken by Louis Daguerre in late 1838.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d3/Boulevard_du_Temple_by_Daguerre.jpg

Notice the black figure on the corner of the street? That would be the first person to be photographed. Someone that was getting their shoes polished.

Look how empty those streets are. That must have been nice.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The streets were full. It was a long exposure photograph, so only still objects appeared on the film. Only the two people were completely still, which is why they were the only ones to appear.

This photo was taken in France. Far from desolate.

[–]M7600 1 point2 points ago

[–]friedrice5005 6 points7 points ago

You've got it wrong. The Porn industry (which at the time only worked in live theater) funded and headed the research for cameras. They merely wouldn't release any photos until they had a high enough quality to distribute.

Seems like this is the case. That's pretty messed up, isnt it? To be unable to have a conversation about historical events and facts? There are plenty of incredible middle-eastern scientific discoveries that advanced medical understanding, and dont even get me started on how much the Asian nations have contributed.

[–]seditious_commotion 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is actually really sad what happened to those middle-eastern cultures. Baghdad was the intellectual capital of the world for a large period there, I believe around 700-1000AD.

....then science was declared witchcraft and ijtihad was looked down upon. That's when the the religious switch occured... everything went down hill from there. Mongols, crusades, etc.

Sadly, I feel like we are approaching that same point in the 'American Golden Age.'

Sometimes I look at old pictures taken with ancient equipments and wonder why we still complain about camera noise on a photo at 25k ISO that is much much much sharper than any of the old master could ever get using their cameras.

[–]croutonicus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You say it like it's a bad thing, but of course there is a good side. For instance, at the moment groups keep trying to top the processing power of eachothers supercomputers. It's easy for us to sit back and say "well we don't NEED all that extra power" but without this constant need to make better versions of things we wouldn't have the computers we're using now.

[–]feureau 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Niepce didn't get nearly as much credit for this invention as he should have had in his lifetime. Daguerre has been hailed for over 150 years. I'm glad history now accepts Niepce as the inventor of photography.

This one was taken by the same guy a year previous:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Nic%C3%A9phore_Ni%C3%A9pce_Oldest_Photograph_1825.jpg

It is a photo of a painting or engraving.

And it still isn't thought to be the first.... just the earliest surviving.

[–]Anosognosia 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a different process so one can argue that it's not a photograph but a heliograph.
edit-- Hmm, checked it up. It's not as much a different process but a different collection(of light/image) method. Same principle behind the reaction on the "film". My bad.

For anyone wondering what it is a picture of, it is a view out of a building - it is called the "View from the Window at Le Gras." Because of the 8-hour exposure time, the sunlight is illuminating both sides of the building.

That's a decent shot but it's a little grainy - try it with a wider aperture and a lower ISO, it should come out a little crisper.

it was not the first photograph ever taken, but instead, it is popularly regarded as the first (which is debated) photograph on a medium that could be preserved! other people took pictures before him but their mediums werent permanent.

I've seen this photograph in person. It's at the Ransom Center at UT Austin. It's very interesting conceptually, but the quality is pretty much exactly the same as what's pictured here. Pretty neat to see it in real life though!

This used to be on display at a museum on UT campus in Austin, tx, but not sure if it's still there. Very impressive to see it in real life.
