It sure is! I mean, assuming the weather is good and all.

I was there last month and its quite a long trip to nowhere just to get there but certainly worth it.

However, horrible to design, as an engineer.

The forces in that are all messed up. Just thinking about it hurts my brain. It is like a normal narrow archway but it has a cantilever on the top edge with the support is on the lower opposite bases. The rebar in that thing must be retarded.

It has to resist the want to roll over sideways by carrying the force, in tension, across the top of the arch. It is like the arch is tilted sideways with cables holding it on the opposite bottom edge... then they build a road on it. =S

[–]Malkav1379 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is actually a movie. It's on Netflix, haven't looked elsewhere yet but I would assume Amazon would have it at least. It was actually pretty good if you don't mind the 'mockumentary' style (Blair Witch, Cloverfield). The talky parts in the beginning were a boring, but once it gets to the trolls, it's a pretty fun ride. The CGI for the monsters was excellent, better than I was hoping for.

Rumor has it that an Americanized remake is in the works, but I think this original is fine the way it is.

I'm sorry, but you are wrong; the picture siredward85 shows the same bridge as the one in the foreground of OP's picture. The difference is that the OP's picture is newer than the picture siredward85 linked to, with the main difference being the small parking area just before the bridge, which has been built recently. The buildings you refer to are the ones on the small peninsula extending from the road near "Hulvågen".

If you look it up on the map service on Finn.no, you should see the new parking area added in the "Kart"-images, while the aerial photography is older and does not include said parking area.

There is a cycle association route passing there on the Molde-Kristiansund leg, but the ferry connecting to Kristiansund has recently been replaced by a sub-sea tunnel, so you'll need to check if this tunnel is ok for bicycles or you'll need to find boat transport.

[–]marvin 0 points1 point ago

Funny story: The central government in Norway consistently refuses to pay (or even give substantial contributions) for road projects such as these, because they are considered an issue for local government. These kinds of roads are necessary to allow efficient transport of goods and services to and from West Norway, where the majority of wealth creation in Norway takes place. (Oil and shipping industry, fishing industry). Multiple pundits have complained that "West Norway uses huge amounts of money to build bridges between uninhabited islands".

Then we have to put up toll stations to collect money for these projects, which of course comes from the local population which pays huge amounts of taxes already. And then the residents of the capital start complaining that West Norway is irresponsibly setting precedent for putting up toll stations.

That was the Western Norwegian propagandic rant of the day. I swear, one day I will gather my military friends from all the military bases outside the capital and arrange an armed blockade of the Oslo Fjord. That will show them.

[–]Jani3D 0 points1 point ago

Nonono, with all probability only warning shots will be fired. And we'll bring the lutefisk and perhaps even some smalahove and gravlaks, all the way from Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane. It's going to be brilliant. And when good old Jensemann opens up the wallet, we can all have a rave.

I am looking forward to this. I bet Jens is a real party animal.

[Edit: Yes, yes he is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmvOccjod6U]

[–]novovo -5 points-4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]marvin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Chill out, dude...I was making an obscure reference to a couple of newspaper articles in various Norwegian papers and debate columns in a regional newspaper which less than 1% of reddit members have any interest in...with the goal of a semi-humoristic exhibition of a minor national political squabble. Norway is so revered on reddit I thought I should for once make a more serious point.

If it's super important, the newspapers in question were Bergens Tidende and Dagens Næringsliv. But I really don't think this is the forum for this kind of political debate.

Sorry if I derailed anyone's train of thought. This road is super awesome, and I want to drive it someday. Preferably on a motorcycle. Seriously.

*And also arrange a blockade of the Oslo Fjord

[–]snoozieboi 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Getting from Oslo to this road snippet will cost you atleast 120USD for gas one way in a tiny rental car. The car it self would cost you about 120USD per day. The driving time from Oslo to this road is about 12 hours, 7-8 effective hours, 3 to catch ferries and find the correct road.

Just to balance out this Nor-porn thread. We build lots of nice bridges and roads in Norway, but we fuck up the capacity and even have new roads that cant handle the Norwegian winter. Meaning by next spring one of the newest sections of road from our capital and northward will be ruined from one winter, and they'll have to dig up long streches again because patchwork will not do.

I've had colleagues driving in Norway that wondered how they managed to miss the highway on a 7 hour drive, that's because there are almost no highways in Norway. The politician planned to make a 4 lane highway from Oslo to Trondheim when we had no money and no oil in 1945. Still they built the railroad system that was 2 or 3 times a regular annual budget of Norway at that time. Now it's too expensive and the existing roads are deterorating faster than they're re-built.

We've got out ass full of money, but a good part of all new roads are covered by road taxes that make tourists drop their jaws enought to eat the toll booths. What we should have done was to hire foreign labour to do the work , so the money goes out of our tiny economy, every body wins and Norway has invested in their own infrastructure, saving lives, time, the environment and money.

Instead we've got big construction entrepreneurs doing cartel deals where they share their projects between them unnoficially and over charge the state for the projects they get.

Also road toll systems continue long after the road has been paid down.

A zig-zaggy bridge is more structurally resistant to cross-winds. I wonder if that was intentional here, or it was merely the lay of the land that drove the design?

That is STUNNING! I'm jealous of my father. When he was in the military he was able to go to Norway. I've always wanted to go.

I just threw up in my mouth. Sure big projects are allocated big money and star architects, but there's a lot of crap put up as well. Just behind the Opera House there's a monstrosity of buildings domininating the shore and they've only been there for a short time. I don't have much confidence in the residential area going up there soon either.

They absolutely destroyed the area of Tøyen near the Munch museum, which used to have quaint small houses much like at Kampen, but now is mostly high-rises with no local soul.

I like those buildings. They make Oslo look like a city, and they save space.

Fair enough. All part of living in a nascent metropolis. But, remember, arson was used to clear the space for those buildings.

Please don't downvote someone who has local experience [or maybe it was because of his name?].

I'm sorry to hear they're destroying great atmosphere and nice buildings for needs of big money. We should stop doing that.

Remain a vocal advocate of the beauty of the world around you, drdigg. Don't give up!

I didn't downvote them. I respect their opinion and agree to a certain extent, but there's a lot that ain't so good in the land of the norskies. I'm local as well.

I was referring to you, drdigg. You got downvoted by someone and I was protesting that. I addressed the nebulous 'them'.
