A much smaller version of this still exists in Hong Kong. ChungKing Mansions is a crazy place....but cheap rooms are to be had!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chungking_Mansions

[–]bhrgunatha 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In 1993, the power and water supplies were suspended for 10 days owing to an explosion in the power supply room. This event made the owners and residents there no longer able to ignore the poor maintenance inside the building.

Ha ha I was living there at the time. The owner of the hostel I lived in tried to charge people half rent but faced a revolt. People were passing out from heat exhaustion, unable to even shower. Great times.

[–]maz-o 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

oh dear god that sounds crazy. got more cool stories from your time there? how long did you live there?

[–]bhrgunatha 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It really was a crazy place, full of poorer travellers and backpackers from all over, illegal immigrants and people that were "taking a rest" from normal society.

The lower floors were full of trading companies and really small stores, some legitimate, some covers for local gangs offloading stolen goods, mixed with a lot of Indian families trying to get by selling cheap stuff they'd imported from India.

Lots of drug related issues too - one guy I met got ripped off trying to buy a large amount of coke but he had a short temper. He almost got shot after fighting with the people who had ripped him off. He was laying low for a whole in the Mansions. Sadly he moved onto Heroin and over the next several months got deeper and deeper in the habit - the last I heard from his girlfriend he was in a local prison after getting arrested trying to buy and sell to support his habit.

I was once introduced to a Nepalese gentleman looking for replacements for drug runners that had been arrested - he actually put up notices looking for white westerners ("white exporters") for his route to Japan as they were less likely to get stopped than the Nepalese flooding in from the Nepal - Hong Kong stages.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This still holds true, actually. There is great Indian food inside, but to reach the restaurants, you're given a guide and taken on a winding tour through staircases lined with junkies.

[–]squonge 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Chungking Mansions is a fascinating:

Chungking Mansions, which stretches from 36-44 Nathan Road, comes as a shock of otherworldly proportions. Teeming, crumbling and motley in the extreme, it is a structure to attract or repel the people of Hong Kong, like the Spaceport Cantina in the original “Star Wars”. Pushtun touts, Nigerians slinging fake Rolexes and a flock of Indian prostitutes in garish saris congregate at its maw. Inside, a glittering and stinking confusion of shops, food stalls and dormitories is piled on itself in an impossible jumble—17 storeys high and covering most of a city block. Is it even a building? The “Mansions” is a singular noun, but most people who live and work there speak of its five blocks, A to E, their lifts connecting only at the dim and claustrophobic bazaar on the first two floors. South Asians and Africans: people from at least 129 different countries have thronged to this warren to trade, talk, eat, pray and fornicate, all in a context of mild lawlessness and constant flux.

[–]pantsbrigade 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everyone always mentions the Indian prostitutes, but I never saw any, just got harassed by the dudes selling suits and watches and occasionally hashish.

One time I came back from some museum and my room at the hostel was gone. Like, the whole room. There'd been some water leak and they'd torn everything out down to the studs in the wall. All my gear was piled up in a closet somewhere...there's a reason it only cost $6 a night to sleep there.

[–]Jigsus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I really want to see an indian prostitute in a sari. It makes so little sense for a sari to be prostitute clothing to me.

Assuming we covered the entire earth in housing with this density:

36,794,240,000 (land acres on earth)/6.5 acres * 33,000 people = 186,801,526,153,846 people.

That's 187 trillion people.

A Kowloon sized city could work with superior architecture/infrastructure/technology.

[–]ThrustVectoring 37 points38 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You vastly underestimate the amount of infrastructure required to stack people that densely. Let's ignore refuse, water, and sanitation for now - assume we have tubes that balance that all out. We still need to ship about 4 pounds of food into the city for each person in it, every day, without fail, or people starve. We might be able to stockpile a three day reserve of food. Maybe.

There's also another issue with something similar to the square-cube law. The boundary length of a city grows linearly with the radius, while the population at constant density grows with the square of the radius. Every pound of food that goes into the city has to go through the boundary, so scaling up Kowloon starts running into problems - you'll eventually run out of room to lay new rail lines to ship food into the city.

Honestly, I think a big reason why Kowloon actually worked was because people could walk out of it to buy food and walk the food back in to the city. That works for a 6.5 acre city, but not for much larger.

[–]macrocephalic 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you allocated adequate outdoor areas for recreation. I actually don't understand why we all need to live in houses with lawns segmented up so small that you can't actually use them for anything more active than an outdoor lunch. I think the small village surrounding a communal square/park idea would work quite well.

[–]rararasputin 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because it looks nice, and room to breathe and have a bit of your own space feels good. The thought of doing things that way makes me feel claustrophobic.

[–]macrocephalic 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not suggesting that we should have 33,000 people per block lik Kowloon City, but I think rather than having 20 houses in a block with 20 little yards that you couldn't play a game of baseball/cricket in if you wanted to, it would be better to have 20 town houses/large units in a square around the perimeter and a big common use outdoor area in the middle.

[–]Beakerbite 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's great if you can effectively police it, otherwise gangs could easily take over massive areas. Once crime takes over in this dense of a population, rooting it out is a problem.

[–]salamanque1 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is not the space, it's how we feed everyone and give everyone a good quality of life and yes, food and health depend a lot on the environment.

Fun fact: the police weren't allowed to set foot in there during majority of the time that this place existed.

Boring historical background from an Hong Konger:

Hong Kong was ceded to the UK during the Qing dynasty in the mid to late 1800's, the original Kowloon Walled City was excluded from the treaty and remained a Chinese territory (which they continued to use as an outpost. in a way, kind of like an embassy in the modern times). British/HK troops/policeman/government officials were not allowed to enter. Fast forward to the Chinese civil war around the 1930/40s, the Nationalist government lost the war and retreated to Taiwan while the Communist claimed the rest of China. The Kowloon Walled City remained status quo and off limit to the Brits while neither the Nationalists or Communists did anything to it. It didn't take long before all the gangs and underground criminals took notice of the absence of a government there and figured it would be a good place to do their business. Eventually, it turned into the spot to do all things illegal, anything from underground casinos to unlicensed dentists to where you could find restaurants where you could eat dogs.

Throughout its existence, I believe the police only went in there a handful of times, most notably in the mid 70s when they sent a massive show of force in there in an attempt to get rid of the gang activities (which they failed)

This is how it used to look like when it used to really have a wall and before the Japanese tore it down to expand the nearby KaiTak airport during WW2

Announced the plans Jan 1987 ... Finally went down April 1994 ... 7 years to evict 33,000 people. that's about 13 people a day. crazyness.

Due to the unique political background of this place, there were lots of law suits and what not going back and forth forever when they tried to evict the residents.

If anyone is interested, City of Darkness: Life In Kowloon Walled City is a great book depicting the history, interior spaces and personal stories of the people who lived there. It really is a unique place with fascinating spaces that result from its position as an unregulated territory between Hong Kong and China, and this book really gets you inside.

Some photos from the book. I really recommend it. It's expensive, but I still look at it years after buying it, and it's one of my favorite books.

Don't know if anybody mentioned this yet but I'm pretty sure the second chapter in Shenmue 2 takes place in this city and their rendition of it is quite amazing. Unless there is another Kowloon that I'm not aware of.

Based on that density... about 900 people would be living in my backyard. O.o

[–]jt004c 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Assuming we covered the entire earth in housing with this density:

36,794,240,000 (land acres on earth)/6.5 acres * 33,000 people =

186,801,526,153,846 people. That's 186 trillion people.

I don't know what those environmentalist windbags are so worked up about, there's still plenty of room left!

[–]TL_DRespect 2 points3 points ago

Not having any notion of how big an acre is, I was left wondering "is that a lot of people, or not many at all?".

To that end, the picture was a useful aid.
