Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Holy crap, I never really thought about what he looked like in color, he looks so much more real.

It's hard for me to imagine that the 19th century didn't occur in black and white.

I wonder if this comic inspired the general plot for the movie Pleasantville.

[–]SoManyMinutes 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't seen that movie in ages. I would like to watch it now. Beats watching "Gold Diggers: Secret of Bear Mountain" which I am currently watching. Though, the blatant lesbian overtones between Wednesday Addams and My Girl in a movie aimed at kids does have me strangely riveted. Strictly from a literary perspective, of course.

[–]brazilliandanny 1 point2 points ago

That movie was actually quite pleasant.

I remember the first time I read this. I immediately asked my dad what they actually did to find load limits, and wasn't nearly as impressed with his realistic answer.

[–]Jumin 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd like to think it is. Up to a certain age, I want to tease kids a bit to force them to think about the world and not take things, even from their father, at face value. I wouldn't mess with them all of the time because I still want them to be able to believe in me, but I also want to make sure that, in this age, they can think for themselves.

I used to think the past had all occurred in black and white, up until Dorothy's house landed in Oz - then, and only then, color came into the world.

[–]therealsutano 1 point2 points ago

Pre-tv, people dreamed in color. When TV was in black and white, many people would dream in black and white. After TV moved to color, people began to dream in color again.

Funny... I don't know if it's because of the shape of his head or what but this still looks kind of like a caricature to me. :P It's just that he's got so many different prominent facial features put together, maybe. I dunnow.

[–]kvellarcanum 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He may have had marfan syndrome, which can cause some of those features. Also, this coloring isn't natural, it is too orangey.

[–]kvellarcanum 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, it is just a few minor areas though, and the blue really brings out the fact that it is orange because in a real color photograph the blue would bounce off onto the subject's face a bit. So with a few color tweaks and a little purple added to balance out his face we get: http://imgur.com/2FIz3

[–]thatsmyaibo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's even weirder to see what he looks like in a normal scene. This photo haunts me for some reason. I guess it adds character to the face we know.

[–]sabertoothedpudding 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's the bottom half of the picture that really does it for me.

When I look at the face, all I can see is the mythological figure of "the guy on the penny". But cover up the head and just look at the hands, the wrinkles in the vest... now that's what makes it real.

[–]tih5h0 256 points257 points ago

[–]Samuel_Gompers 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, and he was seriously ill as well (besides polio, he had a terrible heart). Still, he's only 63 at the time of the picture on the right.

Edit: Compare that to the picture from the 1948 election when Truman held up the "Dewey Defeats Truman" paper; Truman is 64 there.

[–]Madness_As_Muse 52 points53 points ago

It's purely speculative if he had Marfan's Syndrome. He no doubt had a genetic disorder, but Marfan's sufferers generally have very poor eyesight. Lincoln did not. It is believed he had a related genetic disorder that causes tumors. Far more deadly than Marfans, which if discovered early in modern times, can be treated and patients can live a normal lifespan.

Also their are different levels of Marfans. It is widely accepted that Charles de Gaulle had Marfans. He lived to 80.

Of course, even my post is speculative.

... I saw the President fully, as they were moving slowly, and his look, though abstracted, happened to be directed steadily in my eye. He bowed and smiled, but far below his smile I noticed well the expression I have alluded to. None of the artists or pictures has caught the deep, though subtle and indirect, expression of this man's face. There is something else there.

Also Walt Whitman.

[–]johndoe42 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While true, I do think tall and ugly is still a huge advantage. Definitely with the male audience, they don't necessarily care if you're clooney or the great khali, if you're taller than most you have their attention. With women, maybe I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure most women would prefer a tall ogre looking man than a cute impish male (I know this will bring out all the reddit women saying, no I love short cute guys!!! But go to a bar and see what I'm talking about).

[–]lukesterc2002 16 points17 points ago

Ruthless? Lincoln was far more gracious and magnanimous in victory than anyone. He wanted "malice for none, charity for all." That hardly seems like a scary, ruthless guy. He was no more brutal than the circumstances demanded of him. If he could have stopped the dissolution of the Union without a war he would have.

[–]borkborkbork 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He was no more brutal than the circumstances demanded of him.

That's kind of the definition of ruthless. It doesn't mean malicious, it just means being willing to do whatever is required, period. Lots of people wouldn't have had the balls to be as brutal as circumstances required.

He is one ugly mother fucker in his old age. It doesn't matter to me though. He was known for being honest, which you don't see much of nowadays.

[–]punkfunkymonkey 2 points3 points ago*

Yes, it should be "colourised" - Either spelling it's awkward but works well enough.

I've got a lot more color pictures of Abraham Lincoln, and other famous presidents if anyone wants them. I've been gathering colored pictures of everything history-related for a while now. It puts everything into perspective. It shows that even great men like Ulysses S. Grant, and Abraham Lincoln, were ordinary men just like us. They just lived in another time, and age.

Edit: I've got an entire folder dedicated to History in general, all labeled and (most) dated correctly, according to the information I've gathered. Still saving color images scattered around the internet. Some aren't in color though, sadly.

Anyone else think he looks like the pedo from the first season of Prison Break?

[–]this_makes_no_sense 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never noticed it, but now that he is in color, the bags on his face and his wrinkles are very apparent. He looks almost emaciated, which I don't have a problem with, but can you imagine if Lincoln ran for office now? I have a feeling the media would focus on his scruffy beard and unhealthy bags rather than his platform. It's kind of sad.

[–]-mud 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Before television, most people never actually saw the king/president/khan/emperor/inka in real life. Most of the people voting for or against him had only seen his image in newspaper drawings.
