Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Actually, from what I have heard a lot more of their money comes from the import/export business than the oil business. Owning entire ports that are the gateway for products to the rest of the world is much more lucrative.

Im from Syria, every year during summer time a huge majority of Gulf Arabs flock from Saudia Arabia, U.A.E, Kuwait, etc. And blow all their oil money on, hookers, gambling , and alcohol. They think their shit doesn't stink because they have so much money.

Only thing that gets really annoying for us locals, is when summertime comes, buying a drink or paying an admission fee to a club triples in price, so we don't get to party as much in summer. They really kill it for us.

Also, all that stuff is highly illegal in Saudi Arabia, meaning you have to pay off more people for access to it, although my understanding is that it's all there, just more underground. Syria is more moderate, correct?

[–]jomart88 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, Syria is a socialist country whereas countries like Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., Kuwait, etc. base most of their rules off 'Sharia law.' Syria is too diverse for it to be ruled by Sharia law, it has many different sect's of religions, and ethnicity's. Although it is ruled by the Alawiite sect which is an offshoot from Shia'sm, they are very distant from religious law.

Supposedly he is an oil sheikh and is throwing out $2M for some kind of event or something I dont know it all looks absurd.

[–]Jigsus 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the money he throws is not dollars or syrian pounds or saudi riyals, if you ever been in a syrian night club you can buy a whole stack of fake money (usualy with the night club logos on it) for 500 syrian pounds which is $10 so judging by the amount he threw id say it was about $200 at best

Interesting. That makes a lot of sense as to why nobody is jumping to grab it.

[–]alienangel2 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can the money even be traded back to the club for real money again? If yes then people might have at least some motivation to scramble for it (which I imagine would be fun to watch if you're the sheikh throwing money to the plebes), but otherwise it's just "I spent this much on paper because I could".

[–]Jigsus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know but I suspect it can't. It's just a novelty item to make them feel better and it says "I spent this much money on this paper to throw it around". It's pretty expensive for a simple flier.

The girl says "Saudi", in Saudi Arabia the oil is all owned by the monarchy and it's companies: Aramco mostly. So no individual can have private oil fields at all.

I grew up in Dubai, U.A.E. This didn't really surprise me. Fun fact: There's an Arab prince who had his Ferrari gold plated with 22 - 24k gold. And I don't mean gold paint - I mean all the body panels were replaced with solid 22k / 24k gold versions.

NINJA EDIT: It was most probably heavily plated. My point was that it was more than just shiny paint. Fair disclosure: This was from around 15 years back, I can't find any links and such to prove I'm not bullshitting :P

Consider the insanity. Forget the cost of the gold or the car. The car had to be sent to Ferrari to have its suspension reinforced to handle the extra weight. It probably spoiled its handling and performance at least a little bit. But he did it simply because he could.

He's also not the only one. Other sheikhs have done it with Porsches and such, so it's not even a unique trick.

Similarly, there's another Arab sheikh that supposedly has - and I joke not - a single specimen of every model of every production car ever made by every manufacturer, housed in a gigantic warehouse. Again, just did it because he could. Edit: I'm fairly certain the source for this was Jeremy Clarkson's Motorworld.

Don't believe me? Watch Jeremy Clarkson's Motorworld, the episode on Dubai, to get an idea. And watch it knowing it was something like twenty to thirty years ago, and extrapolate how much more nutty and insane the spending must have gotten since then.

Reminds me of a joke I heard. It reads as a Letter to Dad by a student whose father is an Arab Sheikh:

Dear Dad,

Berlin is a wonderful city. Germans are nice and I really like it here, but Dad, I am bit ashamed to go to the college in my Gold Mercedes, when all the students and professors travel by train.

Your Son

Response by the Arab Sheikh Dad:

Loving son,

I just transferred Twenty Five Million Dollars to your Bank account. Please stop embarrassing our family and go and get yourself a train too.

Your Dad

14k would work. Actually pure 24k gold is not that soft. You can buy it in China in 24K (unlike the states) and it isn't nearly as soft as the jewelers in the states want you to believe.

That's a rumor. Not a fact. It was a gold film. He's Saudi. And this is he's car. I've seen it in person. He's constantly in Riyadh, UAE / England / France and was once spotted in Beverly hills with the same car.

I was unclear: I never knew for sure what Arab country he was from, only that he was an Arab sheikh (not necessarily from Dubai). The stories I've heard were that it was a Testarossa. Mind you this is from like, 15 years ago. But anyway, there were other sheikhs who pulled off similar gold modifications on other cars.

[–]ASA09 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I thought it was gold for a long time too. That wasn't the only Ferrari that is "gold plated" - a lot of Mercedes SLRs are done the same way too. It's a really popular mod to have (the gold chrome foil covering) in the UAE. It became much popular recently when this company did it to this 2010 Camaro...

My college roommate was from Dubai. Saw a weather broadcast for rain the next day, and overnight shipped a Burberry umbrella from London. On his birthday he bought 6 of us dinner at a pretty expensive restaurant, maybe $30/person. And when he came back from Christmas break he brought two bottles of Johnny Walker Blue for everyone to share. Even when he plays basketball he never takes off the platinum/white gold/diamond studded cross necklace, and he wears only Armani/Gucci and Nike, for some reason.

I'm very thankful I have him as a friend, because I know that at any time, I can say, "Hey we're going to Vegas tomorrow," and he'll just drop everything and say, "Ok, I have $3000 for strippers. Let's go."

[–]CSRazor 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dropping 3Gs for strippers on demand and only spend 180 bucks for birthday dinner? Not that I doubt your story but that's some strange spending logic.

[–]jibijib 2 points3 points ago

[–]crackanape 6 points7 points ago

In many countries it's normal to pay for everyone on your birthday.

[–]Rebootkid 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've done this. It's my birthday. If I want to take them out to dinner, I'm paying.

[–]alienangel2 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's doing it wrong in your opinion :/ Treating your friends to dinner is doing it right in some cultures.

I mean sure if he were treating you to thousand dollar bottles of champagne for his birthday it would be weirdly out of place, but $30 per person is not really ridiculous, for dinner at an expensive restaurant that actually sounds like a bargain. Sounds like he just wanted to treat his friends to something nice. Presumably he wanted to celebrate, and if he knows his friends aren't all that well off, treating them is the decent thing to do.

I'm not rich or anything, but didn't grow up in north america, and am frequently weirded out by how "what's in it for me?" my perfectly nice Canadian/Romanian/American friends and co-workers can get when it comes to things like meals or splitting bills or even just offering someone some cookies if you happen to have some when they wander into your cubicle. I would feel rude arguing over a small bill or eating food without offering to share with a visitor.

[–]antonbe 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, $30 a person is considered standard, even maybe a little inexpensive, in NYC. :|

[–]alienangel2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Heck, even in small canadian university towns, at a generic "italian" food chain like East Side Marios, you can end up in the $25-30 range just getting an appetizer, main and a drink or two.

[–]geon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In Norway, and even Sweden, $30 would be normal-to-cheapish for the main dish alone.

Oh, and about cars. Someone actually did chrome plate a Mercedes SLR: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/22/mcbling-chrome-slr-holds-food-court-in-dubai/

Someone else got angry about this, so they called up Bugatti and demanded a special edition, which resulted in the Bugatti Veyron Pur Sang: http://www.zercustoms.com/news/images/Bugatti/Bugatti-Veyron-Pur-Sang-1.jpg

[–]alienangel2 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's weird how you're mixing fairly expensive things like overnight shipping overseas (presumably) and $3000 strippers with fairly modest things like treating your friends to dinner and drinks now and then :D. I suppose from his point of view they're all the same.

[–]AwesomnusRadicus 3 points4 points ago

Full quote:

But what do you need a financial advisor for? Twenty years ago you had the highest Gross National Product in the world, now you're tied with Albania. Your second largest export is secondhand goods, closely followed by dates which you're losing five cents a pound on... You know what the business community thinks of you? They think that a hundred years ago you were living in tents out here in the desert chopping each other's heads off and that's where you'll be in another hundred years, so on behalf of my firm I accept your offer.

And we in the U.S. bitch about our 1%...

[–]RobbieGee 12 points13 points ago

If Americans, after speaking out, had their tongues dragged out by pliers and their family raped and then killed, they would have kept quiet.

[–]Unfixedyouth 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you missed my point...

I was saying that the "1%" in other countries may be far worse "villains" than that of the "1%' in the U.S.

I wasn't saying "we in the U.S. stand up and protest these types of people, they should too!"

[–]RobbieGee 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't miss your point, but mine was perhaps unclear. I'm saying they have so much to risk by speaking up that nobody would under those circumstances; and it's perfectly understandable.

[–]Unfixedyouth 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do get what you're saying. I am simply hoping to point out that my comment was off the cuff; just "Ha, and we complain about how people are with money over here" sort of thing.

I do agree with you that they have much to risk over there with how violent things can get in some situations; though, yes to most everyone it is "understandable" to keep quiet, and most everyone would - but I'm sure that there are the small few "internet hero's" who believe that they would speak up even in the face of these harsh consequences...

That being said. Does anyone know how much money that actually is in the gif?

[–]RobbieGee 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am simply hoping to point out that my comment was off the cuff;

Ah, I see what you were worried about. Not to worry, that is how I read it the first time. The misunderstanding probably came from my reaction; after initially laughing, Mr. Buzz Killington whispered in my ear and reminded me about the serious situation these people are in. That's what I posted, so without the context it could look like I was seriously upset.

Typical Saudi douche.

Can't even protect their own country.

Land of the forever backward, home of the eternal hypocrite.

Went there for two days at the beginning of my first tour ('03). Horrible, horrible men.

Mr. Foreskin,

Normally I'd take this opportunity to look someone in the eyes while I shared some shitty truths that lurk in the distant corners of Arabic society, but in this instance I don't feel my opinion would be truly appreciated, instead most likely picked apart in an effort to lure me into some nonsensical instant message debate regarding my judgment of Saudi men.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I understand that the country is in turmoil, but the people...Not all of them can be bad.

[–]DeweyFat 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not at all.

My opinion may seem "abject", though while certainly low, is not pointed at the country as a whole.

Just Arab men rich from oil.

WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

I'm sorry if I got your point wrong, but from what I understand is that you're saying every Arab man who got his money from oil, is a douche? I was born in the UAE and for a fact, I know few people whose all their whole fortune comes from oil and you would be surprised at how modest they are. I took some classes with him and by no means he was a douche, one of the kindest/modest I have ever seen. I'm not saying ALL of them are modest, but again not ALL of them are douches. If I understood your point in a whole different way than what you intended, I'm sorry. English isn't my first language.

That's not Saudi Arabia, That's UAE. Two different countries.

All societies have their good and bad. The real problem is painting societies with broad brushes. The Jersey Shore's crew never tortured anybody, Abu Ghraib's crew did. What does that say about 300 million Americans?

This video is famous even in Saudi Arabia. Constantly being passed from phone to phone via bluethooth, literally older than the internetz. The dude's possibly a drunk "prince" (just someone somehow related to the royal family). I really like all this generalization in this thread though. /s

This is a cultural issue, these guys are all "new money" (last hundred years or so). They have never developed the mentality that money should last for generations.

There is also the Arab "macho" thing happening where it is a case of "look at me I am so rich I can just wipe my arse with money".

As the oil runs out they will be able to buy really nice tents to live in.
