I would love to see a professional baseball player pull this move off.

This actually makes baseball look badass. But then you remember that it's baseball

I'd feel like a total jackass if I was the catcher in this instance.

Why did the guy in blue try to block the way? All my knowledge of baseball comes from a few Wii games.

Catchers blocking home plate is an accepted part of the game.

This was from the 2010 NCAA baseball season. I know one of the teams was Fordham. I can't recall the other. Somewhere in South Carolina.

I remember seeing this on Sportscenter randomly the day after it happened. I tried to find a copy of the video online to no avail. Pretty sweet it cropped back up again, lol.

That player went to my former high school!

When I played little league baseball, a kid on my team did this exact thing. He also didn't get tagged either. The umpire was stunned as he hadn't seen a player do that, but after deliberating for about ten minutes, he said that the kid was out for running outside the baseline. Bullshit.

I saw this on Sportscenter the night it happened. It was some Division 2 college baseball game. Definitely a HOLY S*** moment and is still one of the coolest things I've seen in sports.

I'm confused. Why would the catcher not simply tag home base to get the runner out?

[–]RsonW 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The runner wasn't forced to home, so tagging the base doesn't make an out.

I know a little more about baseball now. Thanks!

IIRC, Catcher has to touch the runner with the glove that has the ball or the ball itself before the runner touches home plate.

This is correct for any non-force out tag and regardless of it being homeplate or second base.

He should be out. Runners cannot leap over a fielder in any league besides the MLB.

Doesn't it look like he tags him with the glove while he's in the air before he lands on the plate?

[–]Say_Ocean 2 points3 points ago

You can kinda see he doesn't actually make contact. Either way I'd trust the ump's call more than my own call from a grainy gif taken from way back through a screen.

Plus the catchers reaction is to immediately turn around to tag him if he didn't touch the plate. Doubtful he would have reacted that way if he knew he tagged him in the air.

Was this in Japan? This just seems like a very Japanese thing to do for some reason.
