I came here to ask if this was actually done or if that was some sort of spectacular make up work. Really amazing movie, glad that the actors went through so much to make sure it was produced with full potential.

Shudder I've heard it's horrible.

[–]envysiblegirl 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but it's brilliant, and I highly recommend it - even if it's just once.

The way Malcolm McDowell plays his character is amazing. There is not much particularly disturbing about this scene, (besides the discomfort of watching someone's eyes held open) but McDowell transfers the discomfort, sickness, and horror to you.

asdfjaldg my palms are sweaty just thinking about it. It's totally worth at least once. I was incredibly impressed with the whole disgusting thing.

One of the few instances where the movie was better than the book

[–]deadgreystar 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have to respectfully disagree, the film lost a lot of nuance that book had and made it more of a snuff film than the book was. Very little violence is in the book, yet Alex and his droogs beat up people all the time in the film.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did you even read the book? The book is way more violent than the film.

[–]deadgreystar -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, did you?

The book doesn't directly show you violence, it doesn't even show you the rape of the two schoolgirls. It implies these things happen but hides it between the slang words it uses. The book is tame because it doesn't directly show you shocking things, just uses them as a tool.

Burgress hates the novel because it is easy to misunderstand the points he makes with it, and you clearly have misunderstood the points.

[–]doogieggr 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

there's at least two more violent occurrences in the book than in the movie. In part one they rob a shop and almost rape the shopkeeper. They beat up an old man carrying books outside a library tearing them up and showering him with the shreded pages as they kick the living shit out of him. In part two he kills a man in prison by kicking his face in. All the scenes in the movie were in the book this is just a few left out.

edit: also the girls that he leads to his bed from the music shop, were twelve and it makes it very clear that he raped them with a smile on his face

[–]UbermenschSIX55321 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sounds like you missed the point of the movie. I'm surprised this movie gets love from Reddit it represents ideas they fundamentally hate.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Anyone who has read the full (21 chapter) book would know that the last chapter completely changes the overall meaning.

[–]ghost521 1 point2 points ago

Spoiler:

FUCK there's no spoiler tag. Guess MixMix will have to read the book now.

[–]cursuliak 0 points1 point ago

A Clockwork Orange may be my favorite book that I have read. The movie; not so much, although it was still good.

[–]deadgreystar 1 point2 points ago

Sounds like you missed the point of the book upon which the movie poorly draws

FTFY

Edit: "We all suffer from the popular desire to make the known notorious. The book I am best known for, or only known for, is a novel I am prepared to repudiate: written a quarter of a century ago, a jeu d'esprit knocked off for money in three weeks, it became known as the raw material for a film which seemed to glorify sex and violence. The film made it easy for readers of the book to misunderstand what it was about, and the misunderstanding will pursue me till I die. I should not have written the book because of this danger of misinterpretation, and the same may be said of Lawrence and Lady Chatterley's Lover." Anthony Burgess.

[–]UbermenschSIX55321 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, thus the movie being superior to the book... You've proven my point.

[–]judithshakespeare 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or you've missed the point of the quote.

[–]UbermenschSIX55321 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The movie is judged independently of the book.... who cares if Kubrick changed the meaning if its better because of it...

[–]judithshakespeare 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Burgess' point was that he feels that the book should never have been written, meaning the film would/should never have been made.

The film made it easy for readers of the book to misunderstand what it was about

And you think the movie was better, I think the book was. TBH I'm happier judging them independently of each other because I didn't dislike the movie, I just don't think it's as good as people make it out to be.

[–]deadgreystar 1 point2 points ago

[–]judithshakespeare 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He imagines that his son will make all the mistakes that he will and he'll just have to stand by and watch it happen. I wouldn't call that a typical redemption tale.

Also, how on earth does the movie celebrate the nature of man? It attempts to put forth mankind's most horrific traits and parade them before us. I'd call that condemnation.

[–]UbermenschSIX55321 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He imagines that his son will make all the mistakes that he will and he'll just have to stand by and watch it happen.

That sounds like 100% typical redemption tale.....

Also, how on earth does the movie celebrate the nature of man?

It depends of your view on those things. Violence and sex are the essence of the nature of man, some people see the this as "horrific" and some people celebrate it. I see A Clockwork Orange as about a man who lives life as he sees fit, he creates his own morals and decides which ideas he values.

[–]judithshakespeare 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

re·demp·tion (r-dmpshn) n.

  1. The act of redeeming or the condition of having been redeemed.
  2. Recovery of something pawned or mortgaged.
  3. The payment of an obligation, as a government's payment of the value of its bonds.
  4. Deliverance upon payment of ransom; rescue.
  5. Christianity Salvation from sin through Jesus's sacrifice.

Alex isn't redeemed - he doesn't really make amends for the things he did in the book, it all just suddenly seems childish and pointless to him. And whilst he does realise he wants something more, I would hardly call it redemption. Worse, he has to sit back and watch it happen to his son who he will be unable to help.

[–]deadgreystar -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The movie is basically glorifying violence and sex, not actually hitting any points that Burgress wrote about.

[–]I_Contradict 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Glorifying? It stressed the idea that your actions catch up with you.

[–]Beaglepower 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think I read that of Kubrick's films, it remained the closest to the original source material. I don't know, I never read the book. The "Singing in the Rain" bits were not in the book. Kubrick thought the rape scene was a bit ordinary, and he asked Malcolm McDowell if he could sing and dance. I think McDowell sang the first song he thought of. Gene Kelly was none too pleased.

Kubrick also made the cat lady fight back in order to make Alex a bit more sympathetic to the audience. In the book she was meek and frightened. But the main theme of the book must be the same as the movie, right? The title itself has to do with combining the automated or manufactured to the organic.

Also, Kubrick eliminated a lot of the argot from the movie to make it more understandable.

[–]cursuliak 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am assuming when you say 'argot' you mean nadsat, and if so then I would like to point out that the nadsat was a big part of what made the book so enjoyable, at least for me. I can understand why Kubrick chose to tone it down, though, as it would be a lot harder to figure out the slang from a movie than it was in the book.
