Origins in the 1940s

The term itself was coined during the jazz age, when "hip" emerged as an adjective to describe aficionados of the growing scene. Although the adjective's exact origins are disputed, some say it was a derivative of "hop," a slang term for opium, while others believe it comes from the West African word "hipi," meaning "to open one's eyes." Nevertheless, "hip" eventually acquired the common English suffix -ster (as in spinster and gangster), and "hipster" entered the language.

The first dictionary to list the word is the short glossary "For Characters Who Don't Dig Jive Talk," which was included with Harry Gibson's 1944 album, Boogie Woogie In Blue. The entry for "hipsters" defined them as "characters who like hot jazz." Initially, hipsters were usually middle-class white youths seeking to emulate the lifestyle of the largely black jazz musicians they followed. In The Jazz Scene (1959), author Eric Hobsbawm (originally writing under the pen name Francis Newton) described hipster language — i.e., "jive-talk or hipster-talk" — as "an argot or cant designed to set the group apart from outsiders." However, the subculture rapidly expanded, and after World War II, a burgeoning literary scene grew up around it. Jack Kerouac described 1940s hipsters as "rising and roaming America, bumming and hitchhiking everywhere [as] characters of a special spirituality." In his essay "The White Negro," Norman Mailer characterized hipsters as American existentialists, living a life surrounded by death — annihilated by atomic war or strangled by social conformity — and electing instead to "divorce [themselves] from society, to exist without roots, to set out on that uncharted journey into the rebellious imperatives of the self."

The 1920's was the jazz age. The 1940's was more... the swing age.

[–]Sebulbasaur 11 points12 points ago

Swing was popular music in the 1940s. Hipsters were listening to bebop.

Actually Swings popularity waned in the 1940s, Bebop was what all of the hipsters were listening to at the time.

The most annoying type of hipsters are the ones that self-righteously remind the people they are conversing with that the term hipster originally described a completely different group of people, like they think you're a fuckin' 13 years old. The explanation is usually followed by a "Do-you-even-know-who-Burroughs-was?" kind of look.

I'm only 23 and the term "hipster" always conjures images in my mind's eye of beatniks with berets and goatees, doing beat poetry while playing the bongo.

Somehow, it became a buzzword for anyone that's a bit unique, stylish, bizarre, bohemian, hippy tendencies, pretentious, into non-mainstream music etc... which seems like a massively sweeping term for lots of people of different strokes.

You can have some french-mustached fixie riding guy with a monocle that listens to jazz, a girl with dreads that plays the ukelele and works in a coffee shop, or some 16 year old kid with those plastic venetian-blind glasses, colourful hair and piercings that listens to crunk... and all of them will get called hipsters at some point.

Out of all the subculture terms i've heard, modern hipsters seem to be either a vastly diverse bunch of people, or the term is being used liberally by silly people.

[–]funkah 40 points41 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it is essentially meaningless as a descriptor. Pretty much it just means "person whose clothes I don't like", and in a lot of cases I believe it's just a more-acceptable way to call someone a faggot.

Considering the old terminology, I think the modern hipster connotation is accurate. Both project a snide sense of self-importance and a constant need to avoid popular trends, while still claiming to set them. For some reason I never made the association before. Interesting how history repeats itself simply because we're all a bunch of forgetful idiots.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I meant collectively, as a civilization. Should've clarified a little more, I guess.

[–]iloveyounohomo -1 points0 points ago*

I always thought a "hipster" was someone who was capable of living a normal life and instead chose to embrace a life of simulated poverty. For instance, when I see some 20 year old kid driving a brand new 2012 Jetta out of the parking lot of his nice $800/month apartment complex while smoking American Spirit cigarettes and listening to... The Best of Bread on 8 track I assume that person is a hipster. I think they are the so called "Yuppies" retarded cousin.

Then there are those who try to emulate these people (for whatever reason) and hipster culture is born.

Or it's just something people call one another instead of "faggot" as suggested above.

Edit: the last bit is probably the way most of us use the term "hipster" these days.

I don't consider myself an atractive male, "meh" is a better description, but I am regularly called a hipster. I find it gets tossed around when people deem something unconventional or a bit eccentric. I agree that the feel of the word around reddit holds a bit of envy.

[–]scottb84 -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suspect it varies from person to person.

I probably could’ve been labeled a hipster a few short years ago. But I grew up. I realized it was not only lame but perhaps even a little offensive to ironically appropriate working class symbols. I realized that music isn’t really that important. I realized that my head hurt a lot more after a night of hard drinking than it used to. I realized that it was better to stand for something than to just stand around.

When I slag hipsters, it doesn’t come from a place of jealousy. Really, it comes from a place of hope. I hope some of those kids learn to put away childish things and do something constructive with their lives. If hipsters had the progressive politics and solidarity to match their flannel work shirts and boiled wool coats, we’d probably be living in a better world.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well not me. There's a uniform, they are easily spotted. And decent looking doesn't come into it.

Liked old hipsters. Kerouac and Burrows. Not the new ones.

[–]givegodawedgie 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A safe measure of using hipster is a lot more their attitude than their dress style, and it is usually pretty damn accurate if you use it that way.

[–]LennyPalmer 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

More or less. It has become a synonym for pretentious, which is fair, but even using it in this way gives room to call vast array of people hipsters. And then, the word is misused on top of that to describe anyone who likes specific things - things people don't like. So, basically, liking any band, book or movie on this planet makes you a hipster to somebody.

I've heard the word used to describe so many completely unrelated things and people that it has lost all meaning. It's basically just a word for people who don't like the same shit as you do.

[–]EvilAce 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

people nowadays don't even know what it means. that's why the term is being thrown around so much by everyone. what I find odd is that when insults like this are used to describe social groups, they usually adopt the term as their own (example: "punk"), but these new hipsters uniquely reject it and instead use the term as an insult against each other. I guess it's because insulting hipsters is popular, and hipsters do what's popular (and then claim they don't).

I suspect it also has something to do with the very basis of the culture, in that it's almost a competition. the coolest hipster is the one who knows about the most obscure things or knew about the most popular things before they were popular. This means if you are with another hipster who knows more than you, you have three choices: be less cool than him, just leave, or insult him and call him a hipster. this is what i mean by competition. the culture is not a brotherhood like most others. the hipsters repel each other and therefore don't want to be considered part of the culture.

Anyway, I think that's how the term got to mean so many different things. When a hipster uses it to insult someone else, he needs to be careful not to describe himself, so he changes the meaning a little bit each time until the word loses all of its meaning because everyone's a hipster.

[–]ColonicIrritation 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Hipster" just seems to describe an attitude rather than any one style though. Most subcultures are easy to identify as they have a relatively specific uniform (bling and baggy pants for hiphop, floppy hair and skinny jeans for emo, mohawks and leather jackets for punks etc...), but some people deemed hipsters couldn't possibly have more contrasting styles and tastes. It seems like hipsterdom is more of a personality type than anything else.

[–]EvilAce 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

hip hop, emo, and punk are all personality types as well, but they also have their own genres of music. hipsters don't have that.

[–]Drunkandwise 3 points4 points ago

[–]ColonicIrritation 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, although having an angsty disposition doesn't necessarily make you emo, and being anarchistic and politically involved doesn't mean you're a punk... from what i've read so far, it seems like to be a bonafide hipster all you need is a pretentious attitude.

[–]born2lovevolcanos 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Out of all the subculture terms i've heard, modern hipsters seem to be either a vastly diverse bunch of people, or the term is being used liberally by silly people.

I don't see a problem with both of these being true. The way the word is used now, hipsters aren't one unique subculture. My understanding of the word is that it refers to people who are involved in something simply because they think it's the hip and underground thing to do.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a particular kind of douchebag who is into avant garde shit just because it's avant garde, not because he is actually moved by it in any substantial way.

Every subculture has posers like this. Douchebag phony hippies, for instance.

Let's not forget douchebag hipster computer hackers. I collect all of these documentaries about computing in past decades, and the stuff made around 1990 just shows the massive degree of douchebag phonies who were part of the "hacker" subculture. Then hacker subculture was often full of shit talk about who was a real hacker. It was and is hilarious.

Douchebag rave babies in absurdly sized pants.

Anyway I've seen lots of pictures about what hipsters look like and I agree, they look like a bunch of assholes. But the only place I ever see them is on the Internet.

Maybe move to another region or something, would be good. For a lot of the complainants. In this here regard. Like maybe the problem is you chose to live in douchebagville. Honestly if you chose to move to San Francisco for any reason on your own accord, and now complain about hipsters: HA HA YOU ARE ONE.

All of that said, I have met lots of people who were into "like really underground shit" throughout my life who were just genuinely bored with mainstream culture.

BTW, this rocked my socks:

french-mustached fixie riding guy with a monocle that listens to jazz

What is great about any hipster discussion is the final allegation of any discussion, which is that everyone having the discussion is a hipster. In the end there is no position one can take on hipsters (including apathy), without being a hipster oneself.

A singularity of hipsterdom.
