Remember when Steam was like "Hey, it's that button I click before I can start Counter-Strike and hopefully it will work."? And what did we get for this? A fucking riot shield.

But Valve was kind of like Blizzard is now. Whatever they did, the fans flamed them and bought their stuff anyway. EA had a shitty reputation back then and has a shitty reputation now. That's the difference.

to be fair steam didn't have much to go by when they started, or the money and amount of ppl that EA has. Also the costumer service they provide is so damn bad that you'll want to cry. Think most of us expected more... or did we.

do you remember what happened when they said that hl2 would only come with steam ? those downvotes definitly do not....

now your on another topic; exclusivity, imo that's fine if you are the one making the game and not just publishing, as EA (BF3). But as i said diffrent topic and that's just my opinion.

but VALVe was pioneering. Origin has many competitors and knows what to do and how to do it, because they have tons of money and are able to follow things like steams footsteps. VALVe earned greatness, but origin has taken of all of what these companies have done, and thrown it away. if that makes no sense, fuck you i dont feel like proofreading

I don't think valve were the first to do something like that, just the first popular one on pc

Yeah... I remember when people irrationally claimed that Steam was hogging their computers' resources, etc., etc.

[–]cnostrand 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Steam WAS a hog. It still is really. It's just as much of a hog now as it was then, but we don't really notice it because computers are much more capable now.

I have found that not to be true. I just took a nice screenshot of task manager to demonstrate. Steam takes up less memory than a bunch of my chrome windows, my mumble client, skype, and my keyboard drivers. I don't think Steam is a system hog (at least not now it isn't).

[–]zitacos 2 points3 points ago

[–]GrrBeck 2 points3 points ago

Counter-Strike was noticably more laggy with Steam. It also crashed a ton, and was always updating. It was a complete fuckup, hell friends didn't work for YEARS.

It was only just last year when my old CS buddy booted up new Steam his first reaction was "holy shit friends work?!"

Steam was never like origin, it had problems but at least most of the games LAUNCHED.

Origin has update issues itself, friends list issues, cloud sync issues, browser plugin issues, game update issues.

Steam has kept somewhat the same interface with minor tweaks.

Origin is a good attempt but falls short in a BAD and Extreme way. (not to mention the horrid voice chat and crappy grouping system).

yes I remember this. I played soooo much day of defeat back in the day. When the steam switch over happened I was like "wtf is this shit"

[–]Stooky 1 point2 points ago

I hated when it changed to the new black. But now looking back, it looks so old but so nice and nostalgic and full of cs 1.6 and dod magic.

[–]Xuerian 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's funny because I still "see" it. In my bandwidth graph when it decides to update and give me no "cancel" button, usually right in the middle of playing some non-steam game online.

People rag on origin, but downloads are easy to control in it.

Ever tried stopping a steam download on slow internet? Pause (wait wait wait wait wait wai... two deaths later) paused

Sorry for the interruption. Your normal programming of anti-Origin, BF3 sucks circlejerking will resume in 5...4...3...2...1...0!

[–]MrCrunchwrap 2 points3 points ago

No see the thing is it's not an interruption. People post links like yours constantly.

"Hey r/gaming, remember this?" must be the headline of a good 25% of posts here. OF COURSE WE REMEMBER IT, FUCK.

Funnily enough, people expect things that come out 7 years later to not be as shitty as the first service was in the beginning.

Oh yeah, steam was pretty horrible when it came out, and everyone hated it as DRM. I remember there were complaints about customer service and never buying Valve products again, and how they would they would quit playing Counter Strike and how Valve was killing PC gaming with this type of thing. I also remember personally hating it because back in 2004 not every campus had the best of internet, and everytime I wanted to play HL2 the game would decide to update, which would take about 30 minutes to an hour if it didn't freeze at some point. They also seemed to update steam HL2 or CS:S every other fucking day. Steam didn't have the whole play offline thing worked out quite either so that wasn't exactly an option all the time.

Tl;DR: Steam sucked when it first came out and would regularly prevent you from playing the single player campaign of Half Life 2.

Wait is there some version of steam that doesn't do that? Because mine still does. And is slow as hell. And takes up a shit ton of memory if I leave the client open.

[–]magicpostit 0 points1 point ago

Yes, I got Steam when it was in beta, it sucked, so I went back to playing on WON. Where is EA's previous service that still works while they're working out the bugs in their new online distribution/networking service? Then it eventually improved and became what it is today. The point is, EA should not have used the launch of Battlefield 3 as a push to get people to use Origin. They should have worked the kinks out with other games for a much longer period of time before they released their biggest multiplayer release of the year.

[–]mjk0104 0 points1 point ago

Only started using steam about a year ago.

Hesitant fist-pump...

[–]Chesthair 0 points1 point ago

Oh yes, I do remember 2004.

Quite funny, I guess. I mean, it's like comparing the most powerful computer right now to a computer 10 years ago.

They've had so much time to learn from Valve/Steams mistakes, but didn't learn a damn thing.

Also: Valve Employees - 200

EA Employees - 10,000.

Yeah...

How long has Origin been out? Get Valve's dick out of your mouth and try being less biased.

[–]knightofmars -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is, Origin is useless other than buying digital exclusives, where as Steam isn't and never has been as bad as Origin.

[–]ConservativeSpin -5 points-4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha, that makes Origin's problems perfectly okay!

It also mean you can't criticize Origin since Steam wasn't criticized before... Oh, wait.

Also, EA has had a download service (EA link,EA download, EA download manager)for a long time, it was just re-branded constantly because of its many problems. You would think after all that time they could have gotten it right.
