After reading this, there was a split second where I forgot that Winter exists and I got excited that Spring was on the way... I'm so upset now.

What's so bad about winter =) ?

[–]vegetarianBLTG 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, Autumn is probably my least favorite season. That being said, Winter is only good when it snows. Summer and Spring, however, still reign supreme.

[–]evitagen-armak 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see appeal in every season. I like the frisk air in the autumn, cozy feeling in the winter, the new start (filled with hope and joy) in the spring and the laziness of the summer.

[–]vegetarianBLTG 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The chapped lips of the fall, the bad drivers and slush getting into your shoes of winter, spring doesn't get warm warm by me until it's practically summer, summer's pretty sweet.

[–]redgroupclan 1 point2 points ago

Winter is awesome because it gives computer geeks like us an excuse to stay inside on the computer when someone like our dad or girlfriend want us to do something outside.

And yet, winter is the closest I get to playing a "sport". Snowboarding kicks ass.

[–]AuntieSocial 0 points1 point ago

Being fucking cold continually from October to June sucks feces-splashed cow teats. I can't afford to heat this shit-pile much above 50 degrees once winter really sets in. And I have extremity-circulation issues. So I spend all winter with a red, runny nose, aching cold fingers and toes, a 4" thick perma-layer of fleece acting as a magnetic tractor beam for every fucking free electron in 5 counties and a general hatred of life that make suicide sound like a viable vacation plan.

[–]Tirrus 38 points39 points ago

As silly as it sounds, you also have to consider that you're used to the cold by the time spring comes around again. EX: My friend lived in Alaska for a few years. Once she was used to the climate, 50 degrees outside meant she was laying out in a bikini tanning.

Spending all winter in the cold, 45 degrees feels warm as heck, especially with the sun out. Alternatively, spending the whole summer in 80+ degree weather, out at a pool somewhere, 45 like a frost brewed super cold activated coors light.

[–]akukame 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone from Florida, I can assure you that once it drops below 70 F, Floridians start wearing winter coats anyways.

Of course... with the average temperature between december and january being over 75 F in most of Florida, this doesn't happen very often.

[–]Ruskin 12 points13 points ago

[–]Bazing1980 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is so true. I worked down there for a couple of years. It would get it I the 50s and I'd be stoked it was still so warm. Maybe throw on a hoodie with my shorts; go out and see people in scarves and parkas.

[–]platipress 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Where do you live in Florida? I've lived in Miami, Orlando, and Gainesville, and there is no way the average temperature in Dec-Jan is 75F. In Gainesville last year it was consistently below 50 in January, getting down into the 20's and teens at night.

[–]dtptampa 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've lived in Tampa pretty much my entire life, and the average high varies between the 60's and 70's here depending on the year.

[–]akukame 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For Orlando, according to Weather.com, daily averages vary between 71 F and 75 F.

For January, the daily averages vary between 71 F and 72 F.

Although the last couple years have been a bit cooler, it is usually quite warm out in December. Now, these are the daily highs. Its going to get reasonably cold at night, possibly dip down below 50 F at night. But during the day, it is very very rarely below 60, and is most commonly in the 70s.

[–]platipress 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From these websites, I think you might be looking at the average highs and not the actual mean, which is 60.F

[–]akukame 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are temperatures ever reported through the mean? I mean, I know I am looking at the highs.

Let me rephrase. So, lets suppose that the for any given day, the high is 75 during the day and the low is 55 at night. Would you call that 65? I know I wouldn't. Because during the daytime hours, like 9am to 6pm, its only going to vary 5 degrees at most. So its going to be between 70 F and 75 F while most people are awake and outside.

It makes almost no logical sense to report the mean. At the very least, I know I've never seen a weatherman report a mean.

[–]platipress 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For the summer time, that time range might be accurate, but it seems to me that in the winter, it doesn't usually warm up until around noon, and it starts getting colder by five. Personally, I think that means play an important role in the evaluation of a places climate, as does the range.

On a side note, TV station Meteorologists don't necessarily report the most important metrics. The dew point is a much better indicator of how humid the air actually is, but everything you seen on TV is relative humidity, which isn't really significant because it varies so much with temperature.

I was in Houston once and saw a Burlington coat factory store. Being from NY I was wondering who the heck wears coat in Houston.

[–]DivineIntervention 1 point2 points ago

In Canada, there's also a short and completely schizo window where you'll see, say, three people at a bus stop in parkas, one in a hoodie and some dude in cut-offs and a Tap-Out t-shirt. It lasts for about two weeks in early spring.

You're probably used to much colder temperatures than that hence why you think it's not cold. I live in Portugal and you can bet that IS cold for me.

Fahrenheit is so weird

[–]ruddelsticks 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's actually not as arbitrary as everyone thinks. 0 degrees Fahrenheit is where brine (water solution saturated with salt) freezes. OK, well, it still seems pretty arbitrary (why brine?) but at least the values aren't arbitrary.

[–]insincere_comment 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sailors would care about when salt water freezes, pre-air commerce too.

Nothing is arbitrary, there are no accidents, only subjective irrelevance.

[–]ruddelsticks 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is, however, brine is a bit saltier than any sort of water sailors would have to deal with. Not to mention air temperature and water temperature aren't the same.

[–]insincere_comment 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, good point. Well then perhaps that's the point that brine, used in cooking, and meat preservation, could no longer do its job. Pure speculation, too lazy to google.

[–]ruddelsticks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I dunno, there probably was a reason for it, I just was saying it seemed arbitrary.

[–]beebhead 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And supposedly 1 degree Fahrenheit is the minimal change in temperature humans can detect.

[–]SophisticatedVagrant 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That sounds like the definition of arbitrary...

[–]SophisticatedVagrant 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But the freezing point of water changes based on the salt concentration, and the saturation concentration changes based on temperature...

Does not compute! head asplodes

[–]NonPermissive 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is called acclimation and is completely natural. It is why in the fall I wear a pair of sweat pants under my jeans and three shirts when it is 50 degrees outside or why Inuits can wear shorts and tank tops whilst lounging in yard furniture on a warm 35 degree day.

Anyway, it is a biological function that sort of serves a purpose.

It is more humid in the spring. Also I believe apart from the psychological aspects of being able to tolerate the same temps in different ways has something to do with thickening and thinning of the blood. Also im not sure about this but mabey the angle of the sun has something to do with it. Kinda like a 90f day in NJ vs a 90f day in FL is totally different in the sun as far as UV goes

It's 55F here in the Hague, I am ECSTATIC!

I'm love cold weather, but whenever more than 5cm of snow falls on the ground everything is fucked up. Trains either stop riding or slide across stations, same with the metro. Fuck that.
