Gotta love that minute or two where your eyes need to adjust to the outside light. I like to pretend I'm a vault dweller stepping out into the wastes :)

To this day, I still remember the first time I saw a movie where it was broad daylight when I went in and pitch black when I left. It may have been Aladdin. Either way, I was no more than 5 years old and it creeped me the fuck out. Like I somehow seriously had no idea that it would be dark out and it was completely surreal. Or maybe it was the Lion King, but either way it was one of those Disney Movies where it's generally daytime during the movie as well, which made the transition extra odd.

(While I'm not sure of the movie, I still remember the experience of leaving the theater.)

I had the same feeling but in reverse one time in Times Square. My family was visiting New York, and after a day of sightseeing, we decided to go for dinner at Planet Hollywood. We went in at probably a bit before 7 (still plenty of sunlight out), and with the line and dinner, we were probably inside for a good 2.5 hours. Came out at 9:30/10 and I was like, "WTF, why is the sun still out? It should be night-time!" Then I looked straight up and saw that it the sky was black. Crazy amount of lights in Times Square, no wonder they can see it from space.

My first time going to New York City as an adult (in September), it was pretty rainy when we were wandering through Times Square. So it seemed...well, like you say, day time at 11 o'clock at night.

It was pretty crazy.

I still feel weird walking out of a dark theater into daylight. I must have gone to a lot of evening movies as a child.

I had a similar reaction the first time I went to a matinee show. I was so accustomed to it being pitch black and near bed time when I walked out of the theatre that the first time I came out in the middle of a hot summer day with the sun beaming down I thought I had completely missed a day and resurfaced 15 hours later. It took a moment to readjust/

Usually it's during action movies that I love walking out of the theater feeling like a boss.

The next couple of minutes are like an out of body experience. It's so strange when you talk to your friends or something and you feel completely incapable of holding conversation.

The most I get tripped out is walking out of a matinée and thinking, "Why the fuck is it still daytime?"

I try not to go to matinées anymore because after being in a theater I think my body gets into a "now comes sleep" mode regardless of whether I'm leaving said theater at 1am or 7pm.

You think that's bad? Once when I went to the movies it was incredibly still outside, no wind, no noise, just still, and when I came out all the streets were a mess, trees were down, trash scattered everywhere and there were almost no people around. Apparently there was a huge storm while we were watching the movies, and what we saw before we went in was the silence before the storm.

The most awkward feeling is going in during the day, and leaving during the night. I end up feeling so lazy :(

[–]kinetophone 1 point2 points ago

Looks like Robin Williams from Jumanji- could be wrong. As to 'surreal' cinema exits, we had a bad hailstorm at 8pm a few years back. People went in to the cinema at 7pm during a pleasant sunset. At 9pm, they exited- to find all their cars TOTALED from all the glass knocked out and huge dents. They were unaware of the storm.

I remember after me and my girlfriend at the time went to see Groundhog Day in the theaters.

I swear I had no idea what day it was when we left the theater.

That was one of the really genius aspects of Inception. They describe the feeling of waking up and feeling like you've just left a dream, like you don't remember exactly how you got there...

...And then you leave the movie theater with the same feeling.

I went to see Devil with a friend at 1pm in the afternoon, we were the only people in the whole theatre, and it's weird being in the dark for that long in the middle of the day, come outside and it's still bright and warm out...Those were basically my thoughts.

Use this at a theater that opens early (http://www.movie-madness.org). Leave the theater asking people if they remember the long-before time.
