Anyone care to explain to me why cats are so fucking athletic? Really. That fucking cat moved it's legs faster than anything I've ever seen fucking move.

[–]indeed_something 41 points42 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

1) Cats are evolved from hunters and unlike human hunters, cats don't have projectile weapons. Their ancestors were naturally selected for the speed needed to kill.

2) The slick surface of bathtub and the adrenaline rush in the cat are contributing.

3) Cats are very small compared to humans. This makes more of a difference than you might think.

When you take a cube and reduce each side by half, you reduce the surface area of each side by to 1/4 but the volume (and thus weight) of the cube by to 1/8th. This means that when you're tiny, a little bit of muscle goes a long, long way.

On the other hand, elephants have enough muscle to lift entire tree trunks, but not enough muscle to jump, not even a centimeter. Size has benefits (more capacity for overall strength, etc.) and costs (need more food, reduced jumping abilities compared to size, etc.).

http://www.smithsonianeducation.org/educators/lesson_plans/size_shapes_animals/index.html has a .pdf that explains 3) in detail.

It's not my explanation. Science has known about it for centuries. It's a shame schools don't do a better job of teaching the square-cube law--it shows the power of mathematics for explaining how life works.

IANAS but Evolution, specifically Natural selection. There was some selection pressure for them to be fast. It was probably that cats ancestors needed to catch prey, they were faster than their competitors so were able to catch more, and therefore were more fit.

As for how? No idea, probably some different ratio of muscle type that allows for fast contractions but low stamina.

My favorite part about 99% of the questions is that they are answered in the FAQ, but asked as if they're Thomas Aquinas breaching new theological grounds.

[–]tracism 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are a lot of pieces of that FAQ that need to be rewritten. For example, the section on the Omniscience Paradox:

"Some bits of knowledge are unknowable by definition, such as 'Nobody knows if X is true'. If this is a true statement, God would know it. If God knew it, it wouldn't be true. "

Seriously? That's a horrible summary of it that would make an awful lot of Christians think that the writer is a moron.

"but if you just accept personal experience as a source of evidence... experiential knowledge means its true to you and that makes it true"

[–]pahncrd 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But it doesn't really, not even if your experiences are taken as fact. For example. Let's say that every single time you pray for rain, it rains. Even though such a thing isn't likely, let's for the sake of argument say it is true. Even so, it is not proof of anything in particular. There are more or less endless reasons why such an event might occur, everything from deities, aliens, hallucinations, living in a simulation or simple implausible, but possible, coincidence. So even if personal experience is taken as fact, it is not proof beyond the occurrence taking place, and says nothing of the mechanism. The mechanism is merely assumed from there by the party experiencing the event, but it is not proof of the person's belief system.

Even if there was absolute proof of god to you, it would not be proof of Christianity, merely that proof of a deity type entity was presented to you. Any beliefs as to the mechanism of the deity, the will or capability of the deity would be nothing more than assumptions. Hell, you cannot even rule out insanity or that another more powerful, but mundane alien species is having fun at your expense.

Even if one assumes the existence of legitimate miracles, the possible explanations for them could be nearly unlimited if you take confirmation bias out of the equation.

[–]cultured_banana_slug 37 points38 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The one main reason I totally wrote off religions is because they simply cannot agree on the most basic fundamentals. How many gods are there? Can't agree. What do they want? Can't agree. Why did they create the world? Can't agree. Why did they create humanity? Can't agree. What do they want us to do? Can't agree. What have they got planned for us? Can't agree. What happens when we die? Can't agree. What do we need to do to go to the happy place when we die? Can't agree. Is there even a happy place at all? Can't agree. Do we go to a happy place or are we reincarnated? Can't agree.

If religion is just another way of understanding the world, and no religion can agree with even a few other religions on the most fundamental workings of reality, then it just doesn't work. If there can be a thousand different answers to the same basic question, then the system offering answers isn't offering answers at all. It's just offering opinions. Opinions aren't answers. You can't build bridges with opinions.

Religion had thousands of years to figure out how the world worked. It couldn't even figure out why children were born male or female, ffs.

[–]midnightbean 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Before I say anything... I'm a fire breathing atheist, I eat christians for breakfast with a side of non believing juice. Now.. so i'm not heavily downvoted based on stupid ass little reddit kids who think in baseball team ways.

What is this religion? A generalization? So called religious groups haven't concerned themselves so much with understanding the world as it has trying to explain it. They would be actually testing things like scientists if they wanted to understand, they already understand though, they already think they have the answers. Some don't even care about the world at all. But in all, they're all just generalizations of certain ideologies like philosophies are.

Also, you're thinking of religions as one big group that can't get along, this is like wondering why an objectivist and a skepticist can't get along, so you don't believe in philosophy and wrote it off too.

I'm just being fair and objective here, as anyone should.

[–]PositivelyClueless 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

His/her point is that if religious groups receive the word of god(s), that this word should be more or less the same all over the world and time. But it isn't - it is as different as the humans and their way of life.
So, it's not god's (gods') word but that of humans.

Maybe I misunderstand yours or his/hers post - but I do agree with both - but your post sounded as if you don't agree with cultured banana slug?

[–]midnightbean 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, I see what you mean. But.. it's completely within anyone or number of peoples power to lie or get delusional. Some use this same argument on occupy wall street, but it's not a good one I don't think.

Yes, I don't. I think groups period are pretty harmful period...I've seen it first hand even in smaller groups and philosophical ideologies. You always get stupid people who latch on and just think exactly the same as what's been set up for the group, everyone should be thinking for themselves I think and challenging each other.

[–]herrmister 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I used to point out religions' woeful inability to explain natural phenomenon, the response I got was "But (insert religion here) isnt about physical explanations. It's about something more profoundly spiritual". This right after attempting to use some obscure text as proof of divine revelation.

[–]curious_redhead 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While I like your point with regards to an objective truth standpoint, I think you are expecting too much from religion. From a historical and evolutionary perspective religion is mostly about social cohesion, control, and in some cases education. The thousands of years religion has been in existence have been spent on perfecting these goals, largely successfully.

[–]Jedi_MindTrick -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Woah, thanks for that comment. That is an interesting perspective that, although maybe internalized and sub-conscious in my reasoning, I haven't really considered before. Just curious if someone could help me out. I wouldn't necessarily call myself atheist, but I definitely reject Christianity. One of the reason i've always been reluctant to rule out a greater being, not necessarily the god worshiped by much of the world. But I can'r fathom how the universe started. Even that small dot of energy and heat that supposedly expanded, where did that come from? It's always something i've dealt with.

[–]TheSeparateFirst 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The good answer is that we just don't know. It's silly to believe in a god to explain something you can't explain, when you can simply say that you don't know and leave it at that.

Most atheists don't disbelieve in deities, we simply don't think that they are a good/likely explanation. I don't know what 'caused' the big bang (if cause is the appropriate word), but I think it probably wasn't an inexplicable supernatural being that exists in a purely hypothetical state of being outside of everything we know.

So that's one perspective.

[–]ckwop 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The good answer is that we just don't know.

As a species, we need to learn say "I don't know." more often. For some reason, we suffer from a cognitive spasm to just make stuff up when we don't know. Across humanity, it is seen as a weakness to not know things.

However, precisely the opposite is the case. Saying "I don't know" is not a sign of weakness. It's a rallying cry; it's a sign that we have work to do.

[–]kookman 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right on, I believe the irregularity of subatomic particles may hold some answers

[–]c0l245 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The god that you're referring to is called the "god of gaps." This is simply a belief in god b/c you don't have an answer to how or why something happens.

This god has been continually shrinking throughout history. This god used to explain all kinds of natural events until we now understand them.

If you accept that we can eventually (however many years from now) figure out how the universe started, then this god is going to be explained away as well.

[–]justin1291 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But still, I'm saying the very beginning. It's hard for me not to sum up the fact something exists to something supernatural. I don't think science can ever explain how something came from nothing.

[–]c0l245 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By your same logic then, who created the supernatural?

Did that something come from nothing? And if that can happen, why can't the universe?

[–]justin1291 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I understand that, however the creation of the universe out of nothing is just odd. I think the fact that some overarching being creating it is possible. You can't tell me you don't doubt in the back of your mind the creation of the universe. Where the fuck did it come from? Energy all of it?

[–]c0l245 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, . . here we are.

I believe that the universe came from literally nothing and it doesn't break the second law of thermodynamics. And has been pretty well explained.

You believe that some being was created from nothing to which no laws apply and that being has consciousness, human characteristics and all. Your god has not been explained, but we just go, "quit thinking and accept it."

If I could explain to you how the universe could come from nothing, would that put an end to the made up idea of god for you?

[–]justin1291 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of course it would, but you can't explain it. That the fun of it. You can explain how the universe started. It at best will be educated speculation.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, where did God come from?

The truth is that even if we for some reason assume that the universe couldn't have come from nothing (which we just don't know, since the laws of thermodynamics only apply to things within our universe), postulating God as the cause just gives us even more questions to answer, since God is in a sense much more complex than the universe.

Very few atheists rule out deities. Most of us just withhold judgment until we see some evidence one way or the other. This is the difference between being a gnostic atheist and an agnostic atheist. There are many things you could imagine that may or may not exist; fairies, celestial teapots, parallel universes. There's just no reason to take it into account in your daily life until you know.

[–]jimicus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But I can'r fathom how the universe started. Even that small dot of energy and heat that supposedly expanded, where did that come from? It's always something i've dealt with.

I'd turn that around slightly.

There are a whole bunch of questions we simply don't know the answer to. Some we may never know the answer to. Are you prepared to accept the answer of someone who has a big book but won't be drawn beyond "an all-powerful being did it"? And if pressed further, ultimately answers with something along the lines of "Because I say so, okay!"?

Most of us stopped accepting "Because I say so, okay!" as a sensible argument some time around the age of 6-8.

As a Christian, I apologize for some people of my religion trying to start or back up ignorant arguments, because in every walk of life...there are idiots :)

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can't really apologize for them, because most of the ones we take issue with don't want to be apologized for.

[–]hendriks 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He also can't apologize for the christian majority that is needed to keep gay marriage illegal in the US.

I can probably come up with another 100 examples of how the moderate religious facilitate things of questionable ethics and morality by the more outspoken minority. I need to calm down though, take my pills. Think happy thoughts.

[–]kurotenshi15 6 points7 points ago

[–]Aloveoftheworld 8 points9 points ago

Not to mention he probably shares some of the same views, otherwise if he were perfectly logical and void of supernatural beliefs, he would reject Christianity.

[–]efrique 7 points8 points ago*

It's really sweet of you, but you can't apologize for something you didn't do and don't agree with.

You're not responsible for it, and your apology can't change their behaviour. There can be no contrition.

[–]kurotenshi15 0 points1 point ago

Can christians and atheists please stop apologising for their respective groups? No single person can speak for all of us of a certain faith or lack thereof.

[–]Hippocampus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It still keeps things civil though.

A person might not be the official spokeperson for a group, but when a group screws up big time, a simple apology still helps smooth things over

[–]mephistoA 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

is there such a thing as a good Christian argument? i'm not being a dick, i just haven't heard one. whenever christians try to argue for their faith, they end up like that cat.

[–]Anon_is_a_Meme 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The best (as in most convincing) turn out to use sneaky logic and rhetorical tricks. That some Christians use them (I'm looking at you, William Lane Craig) says a lot about their sense of ethics.

[–]hendriks -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't want to do this whole discussion again (and again and again), but you as a non-critical thinker who believes in magic, you as someone who lets non-logical reasoning into your moral decision making, you (and the billions moderate believers out there just like you) thereby create the basis that the the real religious fundamentalist and bigots need to exists and grow on. Who decides which magical idea is crazy? Especially if you all feel you can replace logic with faith that explains everything.

TL;DR: start apologizing for yourself, because you're making it possible.

[–]kurotenshi15 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I'm sorry that you feel the need to be critical about every decision a human being, such as I, chooses to make, I'm sorry that I have decided to take a path that is different from yours therefore you see me as inferior, I'm sorry that you, as a human being, are so closed minded that nothing else in the world seems possible besides the closed room you have shut yourself in, that is your bias. I believe in logic and faith because they can work harmoniously. I only apologize because I feel sympathy in the case that I know some people refuse to see logic in the bible and look at everything as a miracle that spontaneously appears.

TL;DR Don't be a nazi on people who believe different than you, I just feel for the redditors who are frustrated by non-logic thinkers

[–]Fauster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's fine for religious people to start arguments. There are no hard feelings, most of us enjoy the debate. For one thing, many of us would still be religious if we didn't get drawn into arguments like we see here every day.

And more importantly, the value of an argument isn't always best measured by whether an opinion is changed, but by whether another's perspective is better understood.

[–]RobotBuddha 0 points1 point ago

Nah, it's been pretty recent the past month or so. In general they're usually fairly well upvoted in comments as long as they're willing to talk rather than just throw insults. One of the better things that's happened to the subreddit in my opinion. Even if only to give evidence that we're not all a bunch of people sitting around and stewing in hatred of every person who believes in a god.

I can understand your point of view, but the way those of us who are non-deistic see it is that there is A) no particularly convincing evidence of any kind of metaphysical presence in the universe; and B) no particular requirement for such a presence in any of the empirical investigations into the nature of life sciences or matter itself.

Given that, why postulate such a grand and overarching being when the only indicator of its existence is a very small collection of very ancient writings?

And seriously, a true atheist does not claim to know anything except the lack of objective, empirical evidence. But being human, we of course want to defend our position when it comes under attack, just like the religious want to. I wouldn't dare say we are perfect, and I am just as given to defending my lack of faith or belief as anybody.
