Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Submission Rules

Is your post not showing up? Do not delete it. Wait 5 minutes to give AutoModerator a chance to look at it; it approves most submissions automatically. If it hasn't shown up after more than 5 minutes, simply message the moderators and ask us to let it through.

Considering how crazy old this image is, by now either somebody has replaced it with a proper defibrillator or dozens have died.

Wasn't this just posted like a week ago?

This indicates the earliest post on Reddit was about three months ago. I'm sure I've seen it before that, but it's not actually more than a year or so old. I was exaggerating for effect.

What, take out defib (possibly for scheduled maintenance/testing or whatever), put in pikachu, take photo, put defib back?

Oh, of course, you mean whoever put the pikachu stole the defib while they were at it! Yes, that would be "a shitty prank". But you have no evidence of that, you just jumped to conclusions there. Self-righteousness may be fun, but finding excuses to get upset at jokes is not the ideal way to get your superiority fix.

Is there anything wrong with erring on the side of caution? I swear, I don't do it that much.

It's all fun and games until someone has a heart attack.

I agree, but your normal AED isn't very effective at all. Theres only like 2% chance or so that will actually bring someone back from cardiac arrhythmia, and that's with proper use paired with CPR. They're not even designed to treat cardiac arrest. Yes, they can definitely help, but many times they don't. They also only help if your heart is in ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia, not aortic fibrillation or anything else. They're nothing like the fucking paddles you see in movies; its just a little electronic thing with pads you stick on someones chest, you turn it on and it does the rest, it also tells you to press the shock button or not. Contrary to what you see on TV, people in cardiac arrest are usually not brought back from an AED and or CPR alone.

Plus, if you really even want the small chance to save someones life with one of those (an AED, not the fucking Pikachu) take a First Aid/CPR class. Otherwise, you should probably just call 911 and let the EMTs do what they're trained to do.

That's still better than the 0% chance and cheap humor you get from a Pokemon joke.

It's obviously there for a reason. Don't fuck with it, especially for a stupid joke.

An AED isn't very effective at all.

Combined with proper CPR and alerting ALS, survival rates go way up. Studies are all over the board (because, as you rightly point out, causes of cardiac arrest are varied) but it's pretty generally accepted that CPR and an AED both more than double the patient's chance of survival, assuming prompt ALS response. It's huge when the AED is actually applied to a shockable rhythm. Even on its own, it's better than a bystander standing there with their hands in their pockets.

Even for professionals, manual defibrillation is getting rarer. Loads of ambulances have started stocking AEDs. Notably, healthcare professionals use a semi-automated form of AED, which gives them more control over the start/stop, but the actual shocking mechanism is identical.

They're not even designed to treat cardiac arrest

Ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation are both forms of cardiac arrest for which an AED is an effective intervention. If the person is actually in cardiac asystole (flatlined; clinically dead; heart no longer beating at all) indeed, the AED isn't going to do shit. However, if they've actually managed to somehow suddenly drop into asystole, ALS getting there, setting up, and applying intervention 10 minutes after they've dropped isn't going to be very successful either.

aortic fibrillation

You mean atrial? A-fib only really causes problems, to my knowledge, when it provokes other cardiac issues -- some of which are shockable rhythms by AED.

People in cardiac arrest are usually not brought back from an AED and or CPR alone

Not entirely correct; certainly true if they've slipped past arrest and into asystole. Both are effective interventions for bystanders to attempt before ALS arrives, and an AED stands as good a chance as manual fibrillation against its target rhythms.

take a First Aid/CPR class

Which will tell you to, if you have it, to apply that fucking AED. Or, more likely, to get another bystander to go run around and find an AED while you apply CPR.

That's entirely correct. I just got some first aid classes, and the instructor told us, if you have a AED at hand, don't even waste time performing CPR, use the AED right away and check what the diagnostic is.

Saving someone by CPR alone is about 1 out of 10,000. Using a AED is about 85% chances of success. And by using AED i mean if the conditions are met for the AED to be used. If the person has flatlined, an AED is useless, you need drugs to kick start the heart back.

Which is pretty significant when you consider that in the U.S. alone, more than one million people have a heart attack each year.

But still nowhere efficient. Take the 1.5k that each unit costs and spend that money on cholesterol testing and treatment for the uninsured. You'd save more lives that way.

Maybe he put pikachu there for the picture and then put the actual defib back? Calm down guys it's the Internet.

What if you replaced it with a pikachu and then the next day someone had a heart attack and died? And then what if someone came up to you as it was happening and asked you if you knew where the defib was and you lied? What if they believed you, never found out who did it, and you had to keep on living that lie? Imagine how horrible your life would be.

What I find weird is, if it's anything like the one I had in my high school, an alarm should have gone off, alerting people.

Depending on where this is at, I guess it could've been taken when nobody could hear the alarm.
