I wish people would stop acquiescing "omnibenevolent" as a trait of the Christian god. Sure he'll forgive you if you accept him, but having such a huge, egotistical precondition is exactly contrary to the idea of omnibenevolence.

Some Christian sects believe that everyone (eventually) will be saved for exactly that reason. So you theological insight is not a new one.

I never said it was new, only that its internal inconsistency is annoying.

Classical theism also includes Omnibenevolence. Most god-believers are this kind of theist. It's a problem.

I think it is more complicated than that. Who knows what a difference a little boy in a chair can make in thousands of lives around him though his own life is dismal, short and seemingly unfulfilling. By thousands we are talking the web of connection that flows from that little boy to all people who are aware of him through various means fair or foul.

Maybe existence is more like an mmo than people would like to consider at first glance. A case of art imitating life and expressing some subconscious echo of knowledge from before the waters of the river lethe overtook our shades. I mean maybe you get to respawn.

So maybe doing a hitch as wheel chair boy earns you bonus points. You respawn in the world where people make war on dinosaur back and every mighty champion is assured a large breasted Valkyrie mate. (my personal view of heaven and is not endorsed by this station or it's affiliates.)

Why? Because if life is cheap and respawns abound what is more eternal than the virtues? Love, compassion, etc. These are things that live on from body to body. Spawn after spawn some things stay the same no matter what world you end up on.

So what if those are the things that really matter? Whether you choose the positive or the negative is not even eternal. Only the struggle of these virtues themselves played out over an infinite set of dramas. Only that is truly eternal. And if a thing is not eternal it is not REAL. It is just dust and shadows. A pixel in a larger mosaic perhaps but still only a pixel. A little boys time in a wheel chair can teach a lot of the less obvious points of conscious being.

Or maybe I'm drunk and high and talking out of my ass. But for a tick there I was something beyond your average human living out the sands of his hourglass.

If you would be immortal such detachment you must learn.

[–]Spirckle[!] 0 points1 point ago

Well maybe, but most christians who understand their theology will attempt to actively refute this hypothesis.

Certainly some (but not all) disabled and disadvantaged people act as if they are ok with the experience for experience sake; which is interesting and makes sense if they internalize the multiple life scenario.

Multiple lives, some under good and some under difficult conditions, would become necessary for moral and spiritual growth.

Reincarnation was never really banned by christianity. Not officially anyway. Some cardinal whose name I cannot remember wrote an essay against reincarnation and that sort of stuck. But nothing of papal authority ever disavowed reincarnation.

In fact reincarnation is suggested in the bible itself.

[–]lonelyinacrowd 2 points3 points ago

This. I hate this garbage.

Morons who say 'I thank God for our victory today'. Could equally be construed as saying 'I thank God for his vengeful smiting against the other team today'.

If God is responsible for making a team win, he also makes a team lose. If God is responsible for one person winning a marathon, he's responsible for thousands of people losing.

I don't like the idea of a God who would selfishly promote one person above thousands of others. Doesn't sound like the sort of thing someone who loved us all equally would do.

Then again, the rest of the bullshit in the Bible doesn't make much sense either.

[–]verstohlen 1 point2 points ago

I'll bet that Christians would argue that the kids, while dying horrifically, are now most likely in Heaven, no longer suffering and are now in a far better place and far better off now than the rich white golfers are, who may eventually die horrific deaths, not before someday losing their money and suffering themselves, and then end up in hell to boot! Sometimes you have to go through a lot of trials, tribulations, and pain to get to a much better place, and those who seem to have life easy now, pay the price later. Anyway, that's what Christians would probably argue.

The funny thing with down-vote blitzkriegs is that they have the opposite effect. The extra activity pushes the post higher in Reddit's rankings. This happened a few years ago (and there was a bit of a shit-storm about it), and seems to be happening again (if the unusually high number of /r/atheism posts making the first page of /r/all is anything to go by). It must be the large number of new users Reddit has attracted recently.

The down-voters try to hide comments on atheist posts, but in doing so, they actually promote the posts. Ha-ha!

Does God cure people? Of course! But, conveniently, only when they have a condition for which there's a cure. Otherwise, it's his "plan" that people be disabled/sick.

I'm sure once medicine has evolved to the point at which we can, say, regenerate limbs for amputees, or completely cure paralysis and cancer, then God will magically decide that missing a limb or being paralyzed or having cancer is not part of any plan.

Funny how his plan, from an objective perspective, seems to be entirely guided by the advancements of humanity.

This kind of hits close to home for me. My little sister is in a wheelchair because of a car accident in 2005. My mother is ultra-religious and maintains that God has told her that she will be healed 100% at some point in the future. Barring a huge leap in medical science, this is not going to happen. As much as I dislike hearing her talk about her religious convictions, I honestly think she would fall apart without them.

Bible States God doesnot want handicap at the altar.

Leviticus 21:16

16 The LORD said to Moses, 17 “Say to Aaron: ‘For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God. 18 No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed; 19 no man with a crippled foot or hand, 20 or who is a hunchback or a dwarf, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles. 21 No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the food offerings to the LORD. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God. 22 He may eat the most holy food of his God, as well as the holy food; 23 yet because of his defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar, and so desecrate my sanctuary. I am the LORD, who makes them holy.’”

--Theist.

The line given to kids, "God answers every prayer," is technically true but ultimately has the effect of promoting a defective understanding. The adage was told to me and it ultimately led to more disappointment than anything.

What was far more helpful in terms of my adult belief (so, I guess, 'harmful' in terms of this audience) is my understanding four basic items:

  • My mortal understanding/experience of suffering and death isn't the last word on those things.
  • My comfort and well-being have absolutely zilch to do with anything I've done or am; I have zero entitlements and therefore cannot justly claim being unduly wronged when bad things happen to me. Because someone, who is kinder than me, is currently surrounded by death and destitution.
  • The God I believe in expects me to sacrifice my comfort, within my ability, to ease suffering where I may
  • The same God levels the cosmic playing field in ways I cannot see or understand.

I am not making an argument in favor of these. I am only laying them out in order to demonstrate that a theist need not hold unrealistic expectations for God's wish-granting, nor need a theist be deluded that this earth reflects any kind of material justice (the Bible certainly makes no such claims).

this makes me sad. part of me really hopes this kid did something horrible in a previous life to deserve this because it just isnt right, poor kid. if you think about it though, a lot of people do horrible shit and then kill themselves or just die and they gotta go somewhere, energy cannot be created or destroyed. so based on this knowledge we know that if we are reincarnations of a previous life, bad souls do exist, or at least inexperienced, and hateful souls; therefore, it can be inferred that the people born into misery were likely souls that created misery in a previous existence. what is everyone's argument as to why reincarnation is false? they say "if i lived a previous life, why don't i remember it?" i'll tell you the answer right now, it's because our brains are in our bodies, and our brains are what hold memory. this is why we only can remember our current life. downvote me all you want athiests, i care about real karma not reddit karma. say what you want i dont care to argue.

yeah im sure you are a genius up there on your atheist high horse. you are so brilliant yet i doubt you have gotten laid by anyone other than a landwhale

This made me laugh for a few reasons. You assume that the comment is directed towards you rather than taking it as a piece of advice. There is no evidence here to suggest that I'm not a spiritual/religious person trying to guide you away from futile arguments (unless you read through my comment history). Secondly, you carelessly or randomly connect a law about energy to the necessity of accepting reincarnation. That's a huge leap. Further, you equate intelligence with getting laid - not sure what to make of that. Finally the assumption that I might have slept with a Darwinian mammal bespeaks your poor understanding of relationships, species, and physics. There is no way I would have survived that kind of encounter with a whale.

I am not one to take away whatever comforts another; be it denial, drugs, delusion or god, as long as they are not trying to influence or cause harm to me or those I love. Reddit is not the place to sort out angst and confusion about real life; there are too many cynics, critics and imposters. My only real criticism of your logic was in assuming that because we have a scientific law of energy conservation it requires us to accept reincarnation as a truth. In this, you are taking on the responsibility of educating others, your logic is flawed and this is where harm starts. If it comforts you to believe that god has a plan for you because of harm you brought to someone in your past, then please take comfort it that. I am struck everyday by the wondrous beauty and the hideous ugliness of the world and all its species. I don't need to search for meaning beyond that, though admittedly at times I do. I wouldn't call myself a devout atheist, but rather a humanist - concerned about the well-being of others to the extent that I can make a positive impact. That's all.

So while this isn't probably the time or place, it sounds like you are at a bit of a crossroads with what you believe and your struggle to allow others their own beliefs.

Ad hominem is bad. Sure.

But I don't see why religion, as an ideology or institution deserves automatic respect.

If you believed in alchemy, big foot, or aliens controlling the brains of congress, why would you deserve automatic respect for that?

For instance compare:
"I prayed for you to get better."

to:
"I didn't do a damn thing to help you get better, but I thought about it, talked to myself about it, to help me get past the guilt of not doing a damned thing."

Why is that somehow admirable?

I guess, but isn't it a bit cruel to tell the weak, the poor, and the sick that they should accept how things are merely because things will be better when they die?

Much less have those who near death give their life savings over to groups that their sole mission is to fill rooms with motivational speakers.

Instead of donating it to causes that might actually help cure, feed, and shelter the unfortunate?

True dat. It's the people who believe in gods we want shaking their heads and feeling insulted when they read this thread..not the people in wheelchairs..

C'mon, people...focus.

[–]davorzdralo 0 points1 point ago

I see absolutely no reason why people in wheelchair would be insulted by this. If you do, you have missed the point.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I was being sarcastic; if someone in a wheelchair were to be insulted by this it would start at the Onion article itself making light of someone in a wheelchair never being able to walk again and not with people who carried on the humour in the same vein as the article.

I for one was laughing my ass off for like and hour.

Satire is primarily a literary genre or form, although in practice it can also be found in the graphic and performing arts. In satire, vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, and society itself, into improvement. Although satire is usually meant to be funny, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit as a weapon.

A common feature of satire is strong irony or sarcasm—"in satire, irony is militant"—but parody, burlesque, exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are all frequently used in satirical speech and writing. This "militant" irony or sarcasm often professes to approve of (or at least accept as natural) the very things the satirist wishes to attack.

'Least the kid's rolling on some tight rims. Seriously though, without being wordy and making this into a religiously fueled time Bob-omb, as if it weren't there already, I feel that religious types and atheists alike have a place on this Earth (there's just not room for you in heaven, ha, I kid, I kid). We can all believe in hope and holding onto something though, so I reiterate my original point. "Dem is some tight rims!"
