never finished pikmin because of the timer (same reason i never finished dr 1 and 2) once they took out the timer in the clearly superior pikimin two i could actually enjoy the game and it was awesome

The main attraction in pikmin for me was just wandering around those beautiful gardens with my pikmin. It just felt so zen. The rustling tall grass, a surprised beetle running away. An insect zooming overhead or my pikmin lustily drinking nectar. Some days were about labor, building bridges, excavating treasure. Others about sustenance, gathering nuts and working together to hunt creatures. Every day ending with the same ritual, no pikmin left behind, reveling in the disappointment of predators rummaging around my empty camp site as I leave.

The focus of the second game on those dratted puzzle caves completely destroyed it for me. Puzzle games are a dime a dozen, that's not what made pikmin remarkable.

i never finished it either. i don't remember the timer or anything, i just remember the game getting way too fucking hard and intense for me. never played any other pikmin games, i didn't know they made other ones to be honest.

I remember this one part that I couldn't get. It bugged me, no matter how much I threw my guys at it, they wouldn't get high enough to land on the platform. A few got on, and I twitched my positioning over and over for the most optimum position to get the part.

A long, long time later I read that the yellow ones could be thrown better, I flipped out.

Pikmin was great, and Pikmin 2 was amazing. So many memories of that game. Like when I was waltzing around the Perplexing Pool and out of fucking nowhere a Beady Long Legs drops out of the sky and lands on top of me, scaring the living shit out of me. Turns out I had stepped on a trap of sorts: there was a white circle on the ground that, after a certain day, would cause that boss to spawn if you stepped on it.

I also remember having no idea that I needed to use the two captains in tandem to kill the Ranging Bloyster, and I ended up feeding it white pikmin to get it to die.

Great games all around.

This game made me realize that I become too emotionally attached to nonexistent entities. I don't care if I have 200 red pikmin in the onion - if 20 died in one lucky attack, I got upset and turned the Gamecube off.

it's one of this worlds most underrated games. but I think the timer ruined it for alot of people. But thank god for Pikmin 2.

Man I didn't think the timer was THAT bad. My first try I finished in 27 days, and you can "win" the game without getting all the pieces as well. Besides, the timer forced you to be efficient and to micromanage, which added to the depth of the gameplay.

The timer wasn't bad at all though. It was a very gracious timer and all it did was add a sense of structure to the game. Dawn, day, dusk, night. There wasn't a task in the game that couldn't easily be done in half a day. People were just incapable of enjoying the game for what it was and tried to get everything done at once. The timer itself was never a problem, only players wanting to do too many things in a single day and rushing through the game with no appreciation of what it was suffered from it. Which sadly was most of them.

It's pretty sad really. Western gamers are so abstract goal orientated that the very thing that made pikmin special, a living breathing world where you need to plan your time and achieve goals, is what made them dislike the game. And as a result the second game was reduced to a bland collection of puzzles without context. A bland exhibition of game mechanics with no heart.

The entire fun of the game for me was concocting a perfect plan to capture 2-3 pieces on the same day, and trying to manage several teams at once. Then, of course, watching it all go tits up because alpha-team got eaten by a frog after they'd finished building their bridge D=

I usually kept a pretty good sense of time requirements to make sure I would be there with a detachment of pikmin when a bridge got finished or a wall knocked down.

Most days I had several work details plugging away while I took a pack of pikmin to roam the land looking for food and nectar. Kept my numbers up while maximizing my blooming pikmin. Plus by the time the bridge goes up, I have a cadre of elite pikmin to cross it with.

A Wii U version is confirmed (Rumored?) Although, I don't see why they didn't take advantage of the Wii's motion controls. It would have worked great. Oh well. I think you can use a Wii controller with the Wii U and plus it's going to be in sexy HD.

I loved this game. I could never beat the last boss, but I still have fond memories. I just went to look at Pikmin 2 to buy it, but it's going for 45 dollars used on amazon. :( Oh well.

This game was the reason I wanted a Game cube at first when I was 12. Then it was Windwaker. Saddly I didn't get a gamecube until much later in it's life, like 2005. I had a PS2 though, so it's not all bad, but I seriously wish I could have had a Gamecube from launch until the Wii. I missed out on owning some really good games for a while, and only got to play them a little here and there at friend's houses.

First game... beautiful living world for you to explore and enjoy. Task driven game play carefully structured around a natural feeling night and day cyclus.

Second game... boring sequence of puzzle cave, completely devoid of the feeling of exploring that beautiful world because impatient gamers couldn't handle a timer.

Puzzle games are a dime a dozen, pikmin wasn't about that. Shame the second game was.

The completely ruined it! The whole point was the day/night cycle. The underground sections in P2 were so interminably boring that I just stopped playing.
