Clearly she is far too clever for such a mundane exercise. She'll probably be that girl who is too smart for her own good later on in life.

I dunno, isn't hatred of cake right up there with animal torture in "signs your child ain't right"?

I don't hate cake, I just recognize pie is the superior pastry.

Unless we're talking about the band...in which case, yes, it's up there with bestiality and sacrificial ceremonies.

Please clarify... are you saying you do like them or you don't?

[–]TheCodexx 5 points6 points ago

To not like the band CAKE is to sacrifice baby animals while raping them on a pedestal as a gift to a dark god.

Hey, listen, man, I'm a representative from His Dark Unholiness. We heard you were equating His followers to people who don't like Cake, and quite honestly, we don't need that kind of stuff associated with us. It hurts recruitment.

[–]TheCodexx 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I can see how you wouldn't want people getting the idea that CAKE-haters are joining your group. It might tarnish your reputation for being despicable and gruesome that you've worked so hard to earn. If people hear they're mingling with your sort they'll assume you've got no taste. And we both know that's not true.

Good pie is pretty damn good, but good cake is amazing. Stop buying dish sponges covered in frosting and buy some quality cake, then we'll talk.

I had a teacher do something similar: a big warning to read all the directions and questions PRIOR to answering any, and the last direction was to not answer any of the questions and just put your head down and wait.

Needless to say, I never get points marked off needlessly for missing directions after that 0%, hah.

[–]Prownilo 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Had the same thing at my school, only we were told it was a speed test, so were even more tempted to just get it done fast. some of the questions like "Stand up and yell out your name" really was funny when you heard someone do that or one of the others like it every so often.

[–]Maxpayne5th 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Had a similar one to that in the first year of high school. Got about a 1/3 through before I saw the end.

Then you realise that reading all the questions in the test, then decide what to do, actually wastes time in a test and then you're massively behind. So while at first, it seemed like a good lesson at the time, in the long run it wasn't.

[–]YThatsSalty 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is true for basic multiple choice or true/false type tests. Beyond those there are tests with complex problems, problems worth varying number of points, and/or option-type problems. As in "choose to answer only two of the next three problems." Without going through the test first and developing a strategy that balances your strengths and weaknesses vs. the difficulty of the problems vs. time constraints, your result likely won't be as good as it could be.

Third grade teacher did that. She even "aged" the tests by crumpling them a little and flicking drops of coffee on them so they would look used (I never read instructions, but was saved by those clues and my obsession with puzzles and trick questions).

Are you my German/English teacher?

[–]shhoppe 21 points22 points ago

  1. The assignment is so overly-simplistic I could see the kid thinking" "There must be something more to this - there's no way it's as simple as tacking a ? on the end of each phrase."
  2. Question 1 should have been completed in order to make it plain what the assignment is.
  3. The overall subject of the assignment is WAY too simple considering the relative sophistication of the instructions, the questions, and the child's answers. Makes me wonder if it's real.

[–]MonkeyWorldUK 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a teacher, I am also dubious. Even if it is real, this child is obviously too high ability to have been given this work in the first place. A child that spells everything perfectly, uses an exclamation mark correctly and knows the seasons rather well? This kid doesn't need this work. Based on that worksheet I'd do a tiny bit of work on capital letters but if this is actually real I'd be willing to bet that the answers are a kind of protest in themselves.

[–]aethauia 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. A better alternative assignment would be something like having her write a story that included questions, or write a letter which asked questions (so you have direct evidence that she does, indeed, know how to use them and you can prove it to others should they ask).

[–]SoPoOneO 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What if it's for children that are just learning how to use question marks?

[–]Magnesus 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They know how to read instructions but don't know how to use question mark?

[–]hollisterrox 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This student is clearly well ahead of that point in her learning. She is forming sentences well, using the exclamation mark, etc. This assignment really was too easy for her, and is an example of standard syllabus teaching that drives me nuts.

[–]GustavoFrings 23 points24 points ago

Needs more red marker and big fat zero.

[–]shoziku 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

if that was mine they would have put a full-page-size ZERO on it, attached a pic of me, and put it in the trophy case in the school foyer and warned the other kids that I am a terrorist and have no interest in learning, growing up, or contributing to society. then when my parents were done, the school would punish me too.

I was like this. Eventually, at the age of 6 my teacher comes over to my one day and (I'd finished all my work 10 minutes earlier than everyone else again) told me to bring a book to school every day from now on so I'm not distracting people. And that's how I became a bookworm.

He proceeded to draw an apple.

This is pretty standard for the first time a young kid learns anything. As a parent I am not sure why this is worthy of a post - raise a kid and you will be absolutely convinced that your child is mentally challenged until you start interacting with her friends at school and realize that all kids are dirty, disgusting, and more or less retarded.

[–]Say_fuzzy_pickles 0 points1 point ago

In the beginning of the school year, my third grade teacher gave the class some sheet that had like twenty questions that needed answering. The instructions said to read all of them before writing down the answers.

Turned out question 20 was like "Lol, jk, don't answer any of the questions", so if you weren't paying attention you'd be doing all this work for nothing.

Naturally, I fell for it. Third grade me wasn't used to being trolled by a teacher like that, so I ended up fucking hating that bitch.

[–]DahnkeBallz -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a teacher I would suggest that this person, the teacher, be taken out back and beaten senseless. Obviously someone on a power trip, give them a new paper and have them do it over. You don't trash a kid over a complete misunderstanding. What a toolbag.

[–]SoPoOneO 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The teacher didn't trash the kid. The teacher trashed the paper.

[–]DahnkeBallz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh I see...the paper feels bad about what the kid did. I was trying to show that if the kid didn't read/understand the directions that the end result could be offsetting. It did seem that the kid did put some thought into the answers - not empty responses or unrelated. As John Stewart would say the teacher should have just "Be a fucking human". I am by no stretch a "touchy-feely, dont hurt the little snowflakes" feelings type, but to me the teacher could have just as easily given the kid a new paper and said try again, that's all.

[–]SoPoOneO 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would argue that to it is important to learn the difference between our work being bad and ourselves being bad. Failure is not shameful, but it is real. In never receiving red marks children are left vulnerable and sometimes even devastated later when the encounter a challenge beyond their immediate abilities. It may that we converge on agreement in we find some mutual way to for the child to learn that they failed at the assignment, but that they can try again.

I am sure the intent of the lesson was not to read the instructions...it was to change the statement to a question. The grading should reflect the intent of the paper. The teacher should have given a new paper and checked to make sure that the lesson was clear. If this was a summative assessment (end of lesson testing/quiz) which it was not, it does not test the concept. IT does appear to be a formative assessment/activity (teaching the intended skill or concept) which again by marking the entire thing wrong does not address the skill or concept and should not be reflected in the grade.
