  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

they should ticket this violation more than speed limit violations

nobody wants to be considered slow. I've always thought the sign should say "left lane for passing" or something of that sort.

[–]Dewstain 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The way it should be phrased is only used in a couple of states, I believe.

The phrasing is, "Yield to faster traffic" or "Faster traffic has right of way."

What people don't seem to understand is that it is not their civilian duty to police the left lane. It should be their civilian duty to get the fuck out of my way, though.

Right lane for libyans, left lane for <=88 mph

Because people who aren't paying enough attention to change lanes to the right when they have a line of cars behind them are also not paying enough attention to read the sign.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I never understand when someone changes lanes for an unnoticeable reason, whether on the highway or elsewhere, and is obviously going much slower than I am. They aren't cutting me off, just inconveniencing me because I now have to either slow down or go around them.

I assume they only check to make sure if they are in the clear for that split moment, but don't actully check the speed of other drivers.

Maybe it's just me, but if I see a string of cars, or even one behind me while in the left lane, I move over. It's common courtesy. Also, people who don't pay enough attention to their surroundings shouldn't be driving. Drivers like that are the reason there's always traffic for no reason. Thanks for the OP, this topic annoys me everyday (as you can tell).

On a two lane road, the risk with getting over is that when the entire group approaches a slow moving vehicle in the right lane, all the a-holes who you got over to allow pass are now boxing you in, forcing you to slow and wait until they have all made it through.

[–]BurtonBoarder38 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is true unless they keep moving, which isn't always the case. I guess you have to decide if it's worth it or not. meh

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

It's not primarily a matter of attention. It's a matter of hubris and sanctimony. Those who block traffic in the left lane generally want to act like self-appointed traffic cops, and they think they're the right person for the job.

"How dare you try to pass me?! I'm going the speed limit, and you would have to break the law to pass me!"

I find an M3 in their rearview is much more efficient at pushing them out of my way than some other cars.

you're not safely driving at the speed limit if your in the left lane. You're causing everyone behind you to stomp on their breaks causing a major issue.

Again, it's not your duty to police the road. Drive right, pass left.

No. The cause of the dangerous situation is your ignorance of the lanes. Speeding is not dangerous. I drive on the Pennsylvania turnpike every day where the posted limit is 65. People regularly drive at 75+ and here are hardly ever any accidents. Speeding does not automatically equal danger. Coming up to selfish people blocking the passing lane does equal a dangerous situation.

Nobody would tail you if you weren't so stubborn and had some decency for your fellow commuters.

Just stay off the left lane.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What makes you more important than other cars on the road

Nothing.

But that misses the point. If the person in the left lane can simply move over, which is what we're talking about, they have no good reason not to. Moving to the right does not harm the slowpoke in anyway, and it benefits the speeder.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

What's the difference?

Moving over makes the world better off.

Changing lanes actually requires move effort than hitting the brake, if you think about it.

I thought about it. You're wrong.

A minor twitch in your hand will move your car to the right. A minor twitch will not move your foot to the brake pedal.

Slowing down doesn't harm the speeder either, and benefits everybody.

You're just fucking with me, aren't you? Would you be harmed if you had to drive everywhere at 5 mph? Answer that with some intellectual integrity and then I'll return to the "benefits everybody" part.

For now, I'm pretty sure you're just trying to rationalize your authoritarian impulse to be a self-appointed traffic cop.

I'm not talking about driving at 5mph in the left lane.

Yeah, you're avoiding my question by pretending that speed is irrelevant.

At bottom, you're just rationalizing being an asshole. If you want to be a self-appointed traffic cop, then be one. Pretend that you are the one who owns the road. I can't stop you.

And whether you're an asshole is totally independent of whether someone else is being an asshole. After all, multiple people can be assholes.

People I guess think, oh nobody is behind me, My own lane cause I'm doing 75.

The times that get on my nerves is driving in the cruising lane with cruise control on and your approaching a slower vehicle ahead, check the rear view, nobody back there. Get close to go to pass and here comes a driver creeping up in the left lane. Cruise control OFF!

[–]jgp_267 1 point2 points ago

The sign should say "Keep Right Except To Pass". I think those are more effective because you always have some fucktard doing two mph over the speed limit in the passing lane and thinking he isn't going slow.

One of my biggest pet peeves is people not understanding the difference between MERGE (you know, speed up to the same or close to same speed as traffic) and YIELD (slow down, see if shits coming, stop if it is, go if it isn't)... following that is people merging into my lane without turn signal on and then the government's lack in understanding the merge/yield

Because it's a terrible sign.

Slower traffic, it says. Slower than what? Does that mean faster traffic should not keep right?

The sign should simply say "Keep right", and as such, there's no need for it. Everybody knows to keep right.

It's important to keep the number of signs down, so people don't get used to being able to ignore signs. Only put the things that are important on signs.

[–]SgtMeowenstien 0 points1 point ago

But with the specific wording of that sign, that guy who overtook you can stay in the left most lane, regardless. (as long as no faster cars are immediately present.

Agree

The folks who talk about getting over when they see someone behind them are kinda missing the point. Just drive in the right lane and use the left for passing only. As someone who has driven the 5 LA to SF a LOT, this is a pet peeve of mine.

Also, if you are on a two lane highway (one lane each way) and there is a line of cars behind you (>2) you are REQUIRED (in most states) to pull off the road to let them pass. Dont be a dick about it, your just going to piss them off and no one drives well pissed. You are being unsafe.

[–]bruttsmom 0 points1 point ago

If I'm speeding in left lane and you are driving the speed limit in the right lane we are cool. My speeding has no negative impact on you. However if I am speeding in the left lane and you are driving slow in the same lane you are causing a problem for me. I can not understand why anyone would care that I'm speeding. If I get a ticket so what, I took the risk. Why would you want to police me? When I drive if someone come up on me in the left lane driving faster (this rarely happens and yes I call them idiots within the safetly of my car) I MOVE OVER! It's not my job to enforce the speed limit. If I come upon someone driving slower in the left lane, but they are passing another car, I don't tailgate or get angry as long as they get back into the right lane as soon as it is safe to do so. What ever happened to common courtesy???

We hand out licenses like they're candy. We don't actually even teach people to drive. They're not even licenses. They're permits. Of course people don't know what that sign means.

[–]green8ball 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a permit (working on my license atm) and I was driving on the freeway to go up north in Florida. Most of the time I'm in the right lane so I am obeying the speed limit. Which at the time is 70 MPH. So a semi truck is in front of me and I want to go around. So I get into the left lane and to be in the flow of traffic, I have to start going from 70 MPH to about 80, pushing 85. By the time I'm at 85, I still see people tailgating me wanting me to go faster. As soon as I can get over to be in front of the semi, I switch lanes and see like 20 cars go past me, all doing like 90-95 MPH. I'm thinking in my head "wow, people are assholes".

[–]yellow_bird_gecko 1 point2 points ago

Tell me about it, a few weeks ago I was at a stop light waiting for the light to be green so I could cross the street. As soon as the light turns green, I try to go, but I stall out (I was learning on a clutch) so I turn the ignition and try again, then someone honks at me, and out of anxiety I don't think straight, so I push down on the clutch all the way & the gas, almost ruined the clutch and I finally am able to get to the other side.

[–]hessianerd 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

dont worry about it, you are doing it right.

[–]tryharderyou 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Personally if you're going that much slower than the other lanes, I think you should wait for a larger opening in traffic and THEN move over. I hate when a car that is going way slower than the fast lane moves over to pass a truck and I have to completely slow down, especially if there is a huge gap behind me. Just because someone is going slower in front of you doesn't mean you have the right to pass them that instant. Of course I'm from LA. We're kinda assholes to begin with, let alone asshole drivers.

[–]fireshaper 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, most of the time it is safe to get over and you don't see any cars close, but when you are going 75 and the other cars are going 90 they are going to catch up to you rather quickly. This is even worse if the truck is going downhill when you try to pass as they tend to speed up then.

[–]liquiddoodies 1 point2 points ago

Because most speed limits are archaic. There's no need to do 55 on the highway when people can do 75 safely.

[–]PresAndCEO 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Isn't that somewhat debatable? I saw somewhere that the risk of death in a crash begins to go up exponentially around that point.

[–]liquiddoodies 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Im not taking about dying from a crash. Of course to more dangerous to crash while speeding.

I'm talking about the likelihood of crashing due to speeding. It's more likely that an accident will occur because someone is driving too slow than because someone is driving too fast. The slow driver will cause a chain reaction of people progressively breaking harder due to lack to time to respond. I'm trying to find the article that I saw where they animated this process.

[–]PresAndCEO 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Got it. I suppose you could argue that it's more a factor of everyone going essentially the same speed relative to each other, as opposed to going faster vs. going slower.

If you think about it, it doesn't make sense to say that someone driving too slow causes more accidents than someone driving too fast, because in both of those scenarios, someone is driving "too fast" and the other person is driving "too slow"

[–]liquiddoodies 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll agree. I'm just annoyed at the junior traffic police out there thinking it's their duty to keep people driving at the "proper" speed limits.

[–]no_to_karma 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am merely casting my vote that everyone drives the speed limit. When driving "with the flow" there were still people tailgating and changing lanes all around. The only way everyone would drive the same speed is if we use the speed limit as a guide. Or a Borg hive-mind. I prefer posted speed limits.

[–]liquiddoodies 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Let's see what's the easier option here:

  • Force everyone to drive at archaic limits set eons ago for cars that weren't safe to drive at higher limits.

  • You not be selfish and drive right, pass left.

As long as they are within the legal speed range you will only have a few minutes difference on a typical commute.

We have to deal with others not behaving within our expected range all the time. Driving is no different. If popular opinion passes a law requiring me to drive five over the speed limit, I will.

Re-read my statement and tell me where I called you a douchebag. I simply am stating the obvious, that when people drive the speed limit, it negatively affects the flow of traffic, especially in big cities during rush hour. Is it right? No. Is it true? Yes.

[–]Evil_One 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. Yet people think they are entitled to use the passing lane to exceed the speed limits that are in place.

[–]liquiddoodies 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It makes you a douchebag because you yourself are breaking the law by sitting in the passing lane. So if the law is so important to you, then worry about your own shit first.

Also, what you're doing tends to cause more accidents than people driving above the speed limit. You are causing the motorists behind you to put on their breaks which ends up causing each car behind you to break harder and harder (do to delayed reaction to slow traffic).

Listen Ms. Drama Queen, you aren't a fucking cop and it's none of your goddamn business how fast someone is going. How fucking inconsiderate do you have to be to not move over for faster traffic? It has no impact on you whether or not you're in the far left lane or the next one over so, in light of that, why wouldn't you choose the lane that doesn't inconvenience people? Quit being a dick and show an ounce of courtesy to someone else for once.

[–]yellow_bird_gecko -1 points0 points ago

When that dumbass loses control of their car, they put me in danger. It's definitely my fucking business, and if it ruins your day that I decide to box you in so that you have to slow the fuck down, you can get over it. If that's really enough to ruin your entire day, you're a sad human being. Quit trolling everyone and get a freaking life.

[–]SgtMeowenstien -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Speeding is not inherently dangerous. Compare accidents on non-speed limited sections of the autobahn to those that are and you'll see there is essentially no difference.

What is dangerous is when speeding cars come upon significantly slower moving ones, such as those piloted by self-righteous assholes who feel the need to regulate the behavior of others. Everyday I see people in the left lane moving slower than the rest of traffic which causes traffic to bunch up behind that car and then try to get around it. That is what causes accidents. Highway systems are designed be very efficient but most of them aren't because of people like you.

And I'm not the one trying to regulate you, dumbass. Those speed limits are there for a reason. The "fast lane" is not a free pass to go 10-20 over, and I'm not going to move out of your way to allow you to do such. I don't give a shit if it's efficient for you or not. LEAVE EARLY.

Seriously, speeding is not dangerous? People like you shouldn't be allowed a license.

The chances of a tire blowout happening to someone who maintains their car are extremely low. If it does happen, it's better it happens to a speeder who is paying full attention than someone like you who is spaced out in the left lane going 5 under, drinking coffee and painting your fingernails.

And I'm not the one trying to regulate you

but

I'm not going to move out of your way to allow you to do such.

You can't even keep your arguments straight in the same reply. If you feel the need to "allow" someone to do or not do something then you have issues which are becoming more prevalent the more you talk.

Those speed limits are there for a reason. Google the studies. There is either no correlation between speed and rate of accidents or there is a negative correlation where there are less accidents in places like Germany where cars can speed safely because people adhere to lane discipline and STAY OUT OF THE FUCKING WAY FOR FASTER MOVING VEHICLES.

Our speed limits are largely unchanged from the 60's and 70's when most cars were shit. Today, even the most basic economy cars are safe cruising at 80.

LEAVE EARLY.

I drive for my job. I can't fucking leave early when I drive all day. Do the math and see how much time I can save by going 75 instead of 65 if I drive 180 highway miles in a day. Now multiply that by the couple hundred days I drive in a year. You do know how to do math right?

Seriously, speeding is not dangerous?

Again, it's not when you're doing it on a highway that is designed for you to travel fast on. If you disagree then support your claim or gtfo.

People like you shouldn't be allowed a license.

I drive about 2,000-4,000 miles a month on one of the most dangerous highways in the US. I've doing it for about a year and a half. You would be dead by now if you had to do that. http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lslr5tGQXb1r00ttv.jpg

o.O What are you, twelve? You really are a dumbass, and I'm bored with you. Keep driving like a bat out of hell, that's fine. When you get that ticket or finally do wreck, remember me saying "I told you so."

Find a street with that sign on it, and put bright green stickers on that sign Then watch and see if the traffic on that street doesn't start to improve in following it

FYI. That sign is not used in every state

This sign shouldn't even be necessary!

Should be common courtesy. GTFover! The first time I flash my brights isn't synonymous with "f*ck you". The 3rd time, with no results, it is.

"Slower" is by definition (linguistically) a relative term. Relative terms are not very good in signs. That's the explanation I first thought of. Then I thought of better explanation: they pay attention alright, but being bad slow driver correlates very well with being a bad driver, so they cannot really follow this sign.

I have seen many times how slow people in a fast lane try to yield but they can't because they can't drive faster, and the only way to change a lane in their situation is drive faster or pull over. But they don't want to pull over. And they can't drive faster. So we honk and we give them the look, and they look back at us with their guilty eyes, clutching for life at their steering wheels so their knuckles become white. They should be at home taken care by better drivers, who bring them food and comfort of their affection, but the society tells them: "no, you are strong, you are good on your own, drive as slow as you want, we don't want you to feel dependent, we want to feel you worthy of yourself"

And we honk and we give them the look and they keep crawling in the left lane, scared for their life, cursing the society so cruel to them.

Upvoted, then got to the second paragraph of your post, then un-upvoted.
