This exact thing happened to one of my cats. I've never laughed so hard while feeling so terrible for another creature. Poor thing had a crippling fear of plastic bags after that, the mere hint of one would send him scurrying under the bed.

Ditto, except my poor cat had obviously been abused in his previous home and already had a crippling fear of plastic bags. That wouldn't stop him from sleeping on them, however.
One night I was on the phone and heard this stampede and wild rustling in the hall: Came out to the brown blur of my cat flying through the house with a bag handle wrapped around his waist. Took forever to corner him and cut him loose.
Heartbreaking but hysterical memory.
Can't really blame him for being terrified, though. Looking at it from his perspective, not only was he being terrorized by his arch-nemesis, The Plastic Bag, but then I joined in the pursuit. The world was against him that night; it's a wonder he ever forgave me.

My cat is not so smart. Or maybe his memory is shot. But (and I'm a little ashamed to admit this) I sometimes leave paper shopping bags, (the kind with the twisted paper handle) lying on the floor next to the window. He naps inside of them (they're like a little cave!), and then, as he's exiting his bag, sometimes, sometimes (and I live for these moments) his head will get stuck and he'll flip his shit. And, oh, I love it.

Yup. This exact thing, except it was with a giant paper Crate and Barrel bag. He managed to get it off before I could intervene, and I found him two hours later cowering in a dark corner. While he was working up the nerve to go back out and confront the bag, I threw it away, hoping to prevent future trauma. Little did I realize he would spend the next week slinking around the apartment in abject terror, searching fruitlessly for the now-absent cause of his distress.

yup again, my cat, same thing, but I found it even more hilalrious when you did'nt even see it happen, they just run past you in the hallway never to be seen again. Of course I found my cat again, but he was soooooo bitter, he still had the bag stuck on his neck, I found him curled up in a ball motionless as to not make any noise.

Had a cat that got caught in one of those gigantic 35 gallon sized toys r us bags and it went frigging nuts all over the house and we couldn't catch her to take it off her. She eventually made it under the couch and freed herself by somehow getting it stuck in the springs in an under/over slalom style. Never figured out how she managed that

actually it's the noise the bag makes that terrifies cat's soo much. I am not sure what frequency it is, but if it stays still, and cat plays with it, they're generally chill, but the moment you rapidly crinkle it and it makes that bag noise of kinda like shattering glass spraying water, they go total WTF mode.
