That's how I passed my knot tying exam. I'd just stick the rope in my pocket and pray. 1st in class, because they couldn't undo the knots.

Eagle Scout here. My method for doing the granny knot was to keep trying to screw up the square knot.

Also, I never knew about all of these.

Edit: Do we have our own Eagle Scout subreddit?

...There is no difference between the Square and Thief Knots that I can see.

Also, I guess I should've said I'm an Eagle Scout too...high five!

[–]inter10per 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the square knot both ends come out on the same side of the knot... in the thief knot they come out on opposite sides.

The thief knot was used because it looks so similar to the square knot that most people won't see a difference without careful examination. The idea was that you tied your stuff up with a thief knot, and if anyone broke into it they would probably re-tie it with a square knot. If you saw the knot had changed you would know someone had been in your shit.

[–]Capolan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the thief knot however also cannot support what a square knot can. that is an important distinction to make - especially when doing any pioneering projects.

[–]inter10per 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's true as well, though to be fair the square knot itself isn't a very strong knot. If you're doing something that needs to support a load it's best to avoid the square knot altogether. And the square knot certainly has no place in climbing or rescue.

If you're trying to join two pieces of cordage, a flemish bend, butterfly bend, or a sheet bend would be preferable. If you're trying to secure a load any one of a number of hitches (trucker's, buntline, etc) would be a better idea.

[–]Capolan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yep - i would never put a real "load" on a square knot - but even as a finisher, a Thief knot can cause issues.

I'm a fan of the sheetbend myself, plus it works well with different diameters.

[–]d_minus_jedi 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always thought it was used because if you pull on the loose end, the whole thing comes undone. In this case, it would actually favor the thief, because of the quick getaway potential, while still being a somewhat secure knot.

[–]inter10per 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The thief knot won't come undone just by pulling like that. It's basically a square knot with a lower breaking strength, but you're still not going to break it by pulling on it.

What you're talking about is very close to the the bow knot that people use to tie their shoes. It is technically a doubly "slipped" version of the square knot (or granny knot, depending on how they tie), much like the tiller's hitch in the picture is a slipped version of the square knot. "Slipping" a knot involves threading the end of the cord back through the critical part of the knot, giving a loop that when pulled will exit the knot and let the whole thing come undone.

[–]Nikoli_Delphinki 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This actually came into great use during scout camp one summer. A friend was storying some snacks in his tent (a no-no) and he used a thieves knot to close his bag. Well, he came back a few hours later and saw that his thieves knot was now a square knot, and more importantly that he was missing a few items (couple snacks and some cash). Never found the culprit but the cash was eventually returned via the same manner.

[–]dave196 3 points4 points ago

The difference between the square (I call it a reef) and the thief knots at the sides that the tails are on. The reef knot has the leading ends both on the same side, the thief knot has them on opposite sides. The story goes that the captain of an old sailing ship was worried that people were getting into his treasure chest, so he invented the thief knot, as once opened, the would be thief would retie it as a reef knot.

[–]HuskyHog 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's the idea. a thieve's knot looks exactly like a square knot but the ends are coming from different sides. That way, after the thief steals something and re-does what he thought was a square knot you can tell the difference.

[–]shadowsoflife 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The difference between Square and Thief is the Thief knot ends come out in opposite corners

[–]H3110MyNam31z 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eagle Scout here too!

Also, as someone else stated, there is a difference between a square and thief knot. The leading ends come out on opposite sides when you tie a thief knot.

[–]douggoblue 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The difference is where the short end of the rope goes. In the square knot the short ends are on the same side (the top in this picture), in the thief knot they are on opposite sides. It's a very subtle difference, which is the point, I believe it was used by traders etc so they could see if someone had gone through their things.

[–]Hamlet7768 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Clever. I see why they called it the Thief knot.

[–]Fishypoo1 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It has to do with the remaining rope. The Square knot has both short ends on the same side while the thief knot has them on alternate sides. That way you could tie the thief knot to secure a bag shut and if someone stole your goods and retied a square knot you would notice the difference, while someone stealing in a hurry wouldn't.

[–]Capolan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

eagle here too - sheetbends are great! tying clothesline to huge rope? sheetbend comin at ya.

Square vs. thief -- put substantial weight on it - and you'll see the difference. the difference by the way is in what side of the knot has the trailing rope. square is on the same side for both ends of trailing rope. thief - opposites - thats why thief knots fail under pressure.

bowline - huge for rescue, and tautline hitch - bestest knot evar.

[–]turtleshelf 0 points1 point ago

[–]StoneTigerRodeo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There IS a difference. The difference is the square knots ends come out on the same side of the "square" while on the thiefs knot the come out on opposite sides. Its a subtle difference. Also the thiefs knot does not hold for shit.

[–]Spazzout22 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a life scout I am ashamed. There's a big difference between the square and thief, it's all about where you start the knot. With the square, your main lines will be on the bottom, and your end line will be on top. With the thief one of your main lines will be on the top, and one on the bottom. There's a difference in how you tie it as well...

[–]OrcaNoodle 0 points1 point ago

I actually got into knot tying as a hobby because of Scouting. My favorite knots were probably the one-handed rescue bowline and the jury mast knot. Taut-line hitches, bowlines, and sheepshanks see much more use for me, though.

[–]Bezzie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I love knowing which knots should be used for certain situations. It's so nice just just jumbling together some rope.

My favorite are the hitches, since you think they wont work...but they do since you keep tension on them.

[–]inter10per 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Double overhand - stopper knot (used to prevent a rope from slipping through a device or another knot)

Granny knot - binding knot, often used to create a hitch, but not a hitch itself... is inferior to a reef (square) knot and usually comes into existence as an accident

Lariat loop - loop knot typically used in lassos

Sheet bend double - a bend knot (used to join two ropes), a more secure version of the sheet bend that's harder to tie

Double carrick bend - another bend, used to join heavy ropes or cables too stiff for a regular bend, doesn't jam but is harder to tie than other bends

Surgeon's knot - a modification to the reef knot that makes it more secure

Sheepshank - an old knot used to remove slack from line or to create loops... inappropriate in modern ropes and inferior to an alpine butterfly

Bowline - a knot which creates a non-tightening loop in the end of a rope

Hangman's knot - take a wild guess as to what this one is used for

Sheet bend - a bend knot that's easy to tie and will effectively join ropes of unequal diameters, but isn't as strong as some other bends

Figure 8 double - depending on how the ends are arranged this can be a very strong bend, the foundation of a non-tightening loop, or a bend affectionately known as the "euro death knot". The figure 8 is the foundation of several strong and useful knots.

Square knot - known as the reef knot, a binding knot used to join two ropes, usually around an object. Easy to tie but not particularly strong.

Running knot - makes a weak but easy to tie tightening loop.

Tiller's hitch - a "slipped" version of a sheet bend, can be completely released even under load by pulling the unloaded portion of rope sticking out the side

I'm not sure why you felt the need to clarify that your excitement was "non-sexual" you're either overcompensating for something or knew someone would take it the wrong way...

This is the best website I know for explaining knots and how to tie them. It's very useful at a Maritime Academy.

Very useful in professions like sailing and climbing. Different knots have different strengths and different uses. The figure 8, for example, is very strong if tied correctly, and is what climbers use for their belay lines. With cattle we use a knot similar to a tiller's knot so that animals can be released quickly in case a barn catches on fire.

Most of them, anyway. I wonder how well Apple headphones tied in a sheep shank, tied to another pair in a bowline via a sheet bend, would hold? It's important, because I'm planning on breaking into an Apple store from the ceiling, and they'd never suspect an iDevice user.

There is such an easy solution as well.

When I moved into my first student home, for Uni, I went upstairs to greet the guy that came in after me. When I opened the door I saw he was trying to untangle wires to his GC. The first thing I ever said to him was "Ah yeh, I hate it when wires rape each other..".

Apparently he knew at that moment we would be bros. He was right. Much bro love Tom Loughlin wherever you may be! Best years of my life.

i race sailboats. and because of this it does help to know two or 3 of these. sheepshank square and the running knot (skipknot, not to beconfused with the band?) are 3 of the most useful things in dangerous situations or just plain fastening things.

Are there any tips for how to follow knot tying instructions?

I know this sounds really fucking stupid, but I cannot for the life of me tie any knots in pictures, even with simple (to most) instructions.

I'm a pretty good problem solver, I'm quite dexterous with my hands but when I look at the knots I can't figure out where to start or which direction the "end" of the rope or string should go in to create the loops.

I feel like an idiot, please someone help.

[–]inter10per 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Search for "animated knots" in Google, practice with two pieces of paracord of different colors. Go through each step slowly and make sure everything is right before moving on to the next step.

When you've correctly tied a knot, loosen it up a bit and really look at it to appreciate its structure. This will help you learn to tie it correctly, and to find other, sometimes faster ways of tying it.

Are sheet bend, square knot, and granny knot the same? I think I need differently colored wires so I can tell what's over and under.

[–]rnelsonee 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The square knot and granny knot start the same, but the top twist is reversed for a square knot.

You're right that a sheet bend is not right as shown here - a sheet bend is like a square knot but the working (loose) end comes out to the side, not back to the standing (fixed) end. The illustration just shows another square knot.

The practical difference, BTW, is that a sheet bend will generally be less prone to failing, and is better for ropes of a different size, as compared to the square knot. A granny knot is all-out terrible.
