What are the trebuchets doing in the front line? Why are the siege towers being pulled? How are the Orks supposed to move them to the wall if they are pulling them? Why are there only two storm ladders? And what the fuck do these Ork under the wall do? They should stand back until the siege towers are pushed to the wall, while in the meantime the ladders are put up. Then they should rush in. This picture looks good but is full of fuck. The artist clearly didn't grasp the concept of anything he drew. It's just eye candy, no thoughts were given.

[–]110289 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had the same problems but my most serious one was the fact that the ladders are not going to be high enough and will in no way be secured to the wall.

[–]Killerkarpfen 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Typical for a concept artist working in the games industry. Stuff doesn't need to make sense, just needs to look flashy to catch the eye of everyone. Especially clueless producers who then tell people to make it look exactly like that, good times.

[–]punarvasu 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

also, those ladders are way too short for that wall.

[–]Zhaosen 1 point2 points ago

Had the same idea...i blame too much medieval 2 TW.

[–]RudolphGregor 104 points105 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Huh, I thought it was concept art for a Lord of the Rings video game at first, but it's actually for a fantasy series called "The Dwarves." Dude should give a partial credit to LOTR, though.

[–]davy_crockett 110 points111 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, the siege towers and trolls made me think this was the siege of Helm's Deep.

[–]illTakeCreddit 100 points101 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually they didn't use those siege towers at the Battle of Helm's Deep, it was in Return of the King at Minas Tirath. Either way, those tower designs are STRAIGHT from the movie... Definitely thought it was LOTR at first (and second and third) glance.

[–]urine_luck 57 points58 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

those tower designs are STRAIGHT from the movie

when you say "straight from the movie" do you mean "mildly similar in the way that seige towers throughout history have to follow a basic design format"

[–]earthDF 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but the trolls with the siege ladders are also almost identical. And, even though siege towers have to be more or less the same, its possible to give them a shoddy, made by goblins look that both these and the movie versions share.

[–]illTakeCreddit 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I forgot to add, regardless of influence, the artwork is indeed amazing!

[–]thenumberoned -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yes. because siege towers are not from "real" life or anything. it must be a work of fantasy, and therefor credited to the "only" fantasy novel LOTR.

[–]Limul_Thak 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The tanned hide covering on the towers is pretty much hide-for-hide with the ones from Return of the King. That's what made me think it was LOTR, too.

[–]P33J 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It looks like he mixed elements of Helm's Deep, Minas, and The Black Gate into one epic scene.

[–]hoobastain 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My thoughts exactly. It doesn't seem to fit any one scene from LotR.

[–]Forlarren 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Covering siege towers with hides was a standard feature, they would be kept wet as the primary defense against fire. Siege towers are slow, without protection from fire they would be useless.

[–]Limul_Thak 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While you are right, it really seems like the texture/coloring of these hides is... well... too similar, if you get my drift. If the artist hadn't seen those LOTR towers at least a few times before doing this piece, I'd be really shocked.

[–]follier 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not the novel LOTR.... The design of the siege towers, orc(?) troops, trolls, ladders, the shape of the swords, the architecture of the walls, are all right out of the LOTR movies.

[–]AbeDrinkin 13 points14 points ago

[–]Tushon 12 points13 points ago

If it was confusing that the guy ripped some LOTR stuff before, this one makes it obvious: Sauron's Keep

[–]WallyWalrus 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, this one kind of reminds me of Orthanc crossed with Minus Morgul. But whatever- people who are into fantasy can make their towers and other things, and a lot of them are inevitably going to look similar. Hell, the entire fantasy genre owes so much to Tolkien already, it goes without saying.

[–]bitch_use_the_force 5 points6 points ago

[–]vweltin 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

they dont even seem to be causing any damage to the wall that's preventing the soldiers from entering. They probably should have waited to move with the infantry until the trebuchets --which should be much further back--had done at least some damage to the exterior

[–]chris_ut 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes it makes no sense to mass your infantry before the walls like that when they have no access yet.

[–]hairyhobbo 3 points4 points ago

They seem to be doing good damage to the interior of the city. However the army is just milling about because the walls are still intact.

There are so many things wrong with this attack, I don't know where to begin. Most of it has already been said. My biggest question, however, is "Why is everybody standing within bowshot range waiting for ladders, while there is a slope on the left leading over the wall already?"

Looks more like Helm's Deep. Helm's Deep was in a valley, while Minas Tirith was encircling the edge of a mountain surrounded by plains.

[–]rasputine 51 points52 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It looks like Helm's Deep, but doesn't appear to be Tolkein at all. Not that the attacking army has horsemen as well as trolls. While the walls and city don't match descriptions of Minas Tirith's white walls, there is too much city going on behind the walls to be Helm's Deep.

[–]FormerContra 76 points77 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It might have been one of the frajillion battles throughout the Silmarillion. If I remember correctly, Morgoth does assault several elvish fortresses in mountain areas, and he used trolls and horsemen. Huge Tolkien fanboy here, just my theory.

[–]Deafiler 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wait, Morgoth? As in, 'A Balrog of Morgoth'?

[–]causeofrecession 18 points19 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Morgoth was the original big bad guy. A fallen and evil Valar(a kind of God in Tolkiens world), he corrupted several Maiar(A weaker, less powerful form of God). These Maiar turned into Balrogs. Sauron was also a Maiar, as well as being Leiutenant to Morgoth before he(Morgoth) was banished into the Void, and was more powerful than the Balrogs. The Five Wizards (The Istari), Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast the Brown, Alatar and Pallando are also Maiar.

Edited for clarity.

[–]traceurcasper 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

TIL!

[–]Deafiler 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

...So corrupted demigods became Balrogs? Are they all fire, or were there multiple kinds based on the Maiar that got corrupted?

[–]frozenchicken 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're all fire and what not but it should be noted that not all Maiar are equal in strength or abilities. Same goes for the Balrogs. One Balrog in particular was well known for killing two Elf kings during the Silmarillion as well as winning countless major battles.

[–]causeofrecession 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What frozen chicken said. There were many types. I'm not sure why all the Balrogs became Balrogs. Shelob the spider is a descendant of a giant evil spider Maiar called Ungoliant. Sauron is also a Maiar. They all originally had no form, but did become stuck with their Balrog form, and Sauron with his Dark Lord form. Same with the Wizards, but that is because they were sent to Middle Earth to defeat Sauron. That was their purpose, and is why Gandalf is 'sent back' as Gandalf the White. His task was not finished. They did not have the power to oppose him directly, they had to help the peoples of Middle Earth defeat him. That is why Gandalf leaves at the end. His purpose in Middle Earth is over.

Most of the Balrogs were killed. The one in Moria fled and hid in Moria, and was not known about except by rumours. So the Maiar can die. Sauron dies, and so does Saruman. I'm just rambling now, hope that answers some questions you had.

[–]Thatguyispimp 16 points17 points ago

I loved the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings but when I tried to read The Silmarillion it just felt like tolkien went on a elf loving crazy rampage and not being a fan of elves in the first place, I couldn't take this elf overload. So i just read the wikipedia, not a single fuck was given!

[–]Timpdapimp 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's the epic story of Middle Earth from the elven perspective, cause they were the ones who recorded it...cause they were there. I love reading LOTR and The Silmarillion back to back. Every time it gets better and I get more emotional at the end. It took a few times through to understand it and remember it all but it's totally worth it.

Morgoth's human allies were mostly barbarian-types. I don't recall ever reading that they rode horses...but they don't mention horses very often outside of Rohirim and Elves.

[–]FormerContra 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Didn't he corrupt a batch of Northern ones though? Along with the Kings who would become the Ringwraiths.

[–]rasputine 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that was Sauron who corrupted the human kingdoms with the gifts of the rings? It's been a long while since I read this, and it's a pretty obtuse point as to wether Morgoth attacked any walled fortresses with human cavalry :P

I'm going to have to concede that I don't rightly know, but I don't recall any battles that would have been like the one pictured. I expect this is for some other work of fiction.

*Besieging.

And no, not always. In this pic, they are storming the castle, that is just one way to end the siege. Most times you could convince the garrison that they are surrounded with no hope of relief, and constant bombardment from attackers, and persuade them to surrender in return for reasonable terms. Or you could dig a mine and blow up a portion of the wall, creating a breach, or you could bombard a weak point on the wall, again creating a breach. Alternatively, you could just lay siege and wait until the castle runs out of food and water.

However, I agree, storming castles does suck.

[–]Vitalstatistix 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The latter is typically how they went. Mostly because you don't want to destroy something that could take years to rebuild if you wish to occupy it after you win.

The stormers in this case look like they're all going to end up as hamburger, unless the castle has been under siege for so long that they have no engine ammo left to pulverize those trebuchets & towers. I don't even see turtles to protect sappers, about the only chance this force would have.

[–]TheRedComet 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I'm looking at this picture, and I don't see how at this point the besiegers can win. The ladders, siege engines, and towers are easily burned down by flaming arrows, and the walls look pretty solid against everything else...

Anyone else wonder why there are thousands of troops standing around within bow-shot of the walls? And the catapults!

I know it wouldn't have made such a dramatic book cover, but any non-idiot general would use the catapults to knock a hole in the wall from outside bow range, and then try to pour his troops through it.

Similarly, why are the seige towers so far back? Surely they should be right up against the walls if the attackers are already trying ladders.

Actually, it would be more dramatic if there was a narrow breach in the wall, with troops scrambling up a pile of rubble under a hail of flaming arrows...

It still deserves an upvote though.

Actually, it looks and reminds more of the Battle of Gondolin from the Silmarillion, the city which Minas Tirith Stands in for later in Tolkein's immense history, it was built in a mountain pass and had seven walls, each of differing materials.

[–]TheGatsby 1 point2 points ago

Minas Tirith was assaulted by its gate, there is no gate in this picture. Also, the city appears to be built into a mountain pass like a dam does, concavely, not built from the tip of a mountain like Minas Tirith and in an encircling shape.

Except I see a gate though, it's in between the second and third trebuchet from the left.

edit: nvm, it is for a book completely unrelated to tLotR

In fact, given the fact that it is built like in a mountain pass in the damn, its Dunedaine but its not massive enough to be the black gate. I believe it is Minas Morgul.

[–]kaydub88 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not saying it is Minas Tirith, just that I think it looks more like Minas Tirith than Helm's Deep.

[–]empyreanmax 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The invading army looks like the one from Minas Tirith, but the city and the walls don't look like it at all. They more resemble the long wall of Helm's Deep or the Black Gate, but the city behind the wall makes it clear it's neither of those.

Can someone familiar with the LOTR books explain why Saruman's forces didn't lay siege to the fortress instead of attacking ?

[–]GyantSpyder 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think he addresses it directly - there are no scenes where Saruman sits down with his war council or anything like that. But there are a couple of reasons.

  1. Saruman was arrogant, and his army were mostly monsters. It's not clear if the Uruk-Hai had the kind of temperament to conduct a proper siege.

  2. Saruman was in a hurry. It's easy to forget that he was just as afraid of Sauron as he was of the "good guys." Given the situation with the One Ring, Saruman probably didn't have time to set up camp for a few months or years in the immediate vicinity of his house.

  3. Saruman's army had gunpowder - or at least magical bombs powerful enough to blow through the walls.

  4. The tactical situation favored a swift attack. Reinforcements were on their way to Helm's Deep - but when he attacked, the place was very lightly defended and the Rohirrim troops were split up and uncoordinated. The march to Helm's Deep was a race to see if Saruman's army could slaughter the Rohirrim refugees before the horsemen got there to save the day, and Saruman very nearly succeeded.

So, Saruman (who was, let us not forget, pretty crazy at this point) launched a surprise assault in the middle of the night on a fortress full of refugees defended mostly by old men and boys, using superior firepower to break through the walls before the defenders showed up. It doesn't seem that stupid when you think of it that way.

Saruman lost because Aragorn, who is basically the bomb-diggity, along with several legendary heroes with plot armor, was there to coordinate the defenses long enough for Gandalf, who was presumed dead, to show up with whole new superpowers and a fresh army just in the nick of tmie.

No, this is helm's deep. Minas Tirith is the great white city of Gondor, the seat of man. This is simply a refuge for Rohan, used as a last stand.

I don't remember Trolls at Helm's Deep in either the book or the movie. (Though it has been a long time since I read it.) The battle at Helm's Deep was also a lot smaller in the book than in the movies. This has got to be Minas Tirith.

I don't have a lot of problems with Jackson's aesthetic take on the look of LOTR, but the Seige of Minas Tirith was one of them. I mean, how menacing a deseperate and epic does it look to have everyone fighting in the middle of a nice sunshiney day? I KNOW he included the "brown plume" from Mount Doom that is supposed to blot out the sun but when you watch it do you really feel like it's doing its job? When I read the books I pictured the sky blood red and fires everywhere like the end of the world was happening.

The artwork is amazing. Very much like LOTR though. Honestly I thought that was what it was given the trolls and siege towers. The only thing that tipped me off was I think a horse in the attacking army.
