My thoughts on last night's South Park (imgur.com)

[–]goomonkey 41 points42 points43 points 10 months ago
It was worth watching just to see Clyde Frog's funeral.
[–]dmcnelly 11 points12 points13 points 10 months ago
Had this episode not had all the OWS undertones, I think that could've made for a great episode. Just Cartman having to grow the fuck up.
[–]AckermansFieldPicnic[S] 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
They already had that episode, it was the one about the dog whisperer.
[–]bagelsandkegels 13 points14 points15 points 10 months ago
Tsst!
[–]Missinge 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
Wasn't really him growing up. It was more teaching his mom how to control her kid. Too bad she made him regress.
[–]dumdumdurr 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
smh. dog wheeesperer.
[–]gimpwiz 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Why, because they poked fun at something you like?
[–]dmcnelly 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
No, I just think that aspect was poorly thought out and poorly executed.
[–]gimpwiz 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
I think there was so much ground to cover (so much to make fun of) it was hard to go into any depth... but I'd prefer that to sticking to one point for the whole episode.
[–]Cpt_Hockeyhair 33 points34 points35 points 10 months ago
Also, I think this is one episode where you really couldn't tell who they were making fun of at all times. Sometimes Matt and Trey's stance on stuff is pretty clear, but they just seemed to spread it all around in this episode. But to be honest, I think that's a fair representation of what's going on in real life. It's no one person or groups' fault, but rather a complex issue where many poor decisions resulted in a giant cluster fuck.
I really enjoyed the episode as a whole.
[–]RDS 22 points23 points24 points 10 months ago
Michael Moore got it pretty bad in this one haha.
[–]Cpt_Hockeyhair 21 points22 points23 points 10 months ago
Oh, they got him a lot worse in Team America ;)
[–]hippiekyle 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
matt damon!
[–]magister0 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
Not really. They just showed him saying "We are the 99%" into a megaphone, and depicted him as a fat fuck, which he is. That's not exactly what I'd call brilliant satire.
[–]hiddenrebelbase 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
I think they were also making fun of the fact that anytime there is a significant movement, Michael Moore shows up and yells like he started it.
[–]bkay17 12 points13 points14 points 10 months ago
I also really enjoyed the episode. At first I was scared that they were going to just strongly stand behind one side or the other on the whole OWS thing (which would've been lame), but they just made fun of the entire idea of it, and the participants on both sides, even the neutral parties (cops, news media, etc.).
All these naysayers saying that South Park hasn't been up to par this year are just wrong. You're entitled to your own opinion, but just know that it's wrong.

Cops tear gas crowds and we have people downvoting you for calling them not-neutral. What a bunch of douches.
EDIT: That's better.
[–]lolzombies 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
Did anyone else catch the Dexter reference?
[–]MRGLU 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
no where was that?
[–]couldbeglorious 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
The trip wire?
[–]MRGLU 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
oo yeah. tough to tell if that's a reference or just a similar story device. coincidental for sure.
[–]dime00 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
It seemed too specific to be coincidental. If someone can tell me other shows which have had murder scenes where the victim is tied up like an angel and the person trying to save her triggers the death via tripwire, I'll happily accept coincidence.
[–]boydrewboy 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
Saw.
[–]dime00 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I saw the first 3 Saws, am I forgetting something or did it occur in a subsequent Saw?
[–]boydrewboy 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
If I'm not mistaken, Saw 4 had a reverse angel mechanism, where the victim's ribs were pulled out via a device inside her chest. As for the tripwire, I'm sure that was in there somewhere. Either way, just because it happened in one show doesn't mean it was necessarily pulled from it and 2 forms of media showing something similar doesn't prove coincidence either.
If the creators were aiming for Dexter, don't you think they would have gone a bit further in depth? Maybe have Cartman dump the bodies in a nearby lake? Or he could have his entire room covered in plastic as he attacks another stuffed animal. Or he could have found one of his animals' hands in a block of ice. Gruesome murders aren't a reference to anything without further connections. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
[–]creat0r86 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
SPOILER ALERT for SAW IV
The tripwire was Saw 4 if I'm not mistaken, when the black cop bursts into the room with the three guys, one standing on an iceblock, one in a puddle with an electrocuted fence and the guy holding the bomb.
[–]Tclaytn 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I thought it was a Dexter reference until her head blew up. After that, it was too different from the Dexter one.
[–]rhinofinger 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I mean, it was a stuffed animal, and it's a cartoon. It wouldn't make too much sense to be identical. I think they probably got the idea from Dexter though, they do make the episodes 6 days before they air...
[–]buckethead-- 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Anyone catch the L.A. Noir game reference? It was the little melody that was played every time Cartman went looking for clues.
[–]inmate2 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
It's always brilliant.
[–]Sui64 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
I don't know, I think it's fine that the Occupy part was on the silly side. The main cast wasn't involved at all; they gave us Jimmy and Butters standing around by themselves, surrounded by people doing nothing, and I think the creators are perfectly aware that that's not an interesting combo.
It's light filler, because the main cast's presence in the part about Cartman suggests strongly that that is meant to be the focal point. I mean, we rarely get to go that far into his self-deceit and see the measures he'll go to in order to avoid admitting that deep down, he is profoundly sad.
Don't forget, they could easily have left it at "Dude. What the hell," but Kyle does Cartman the kindness of explaining what had just happened: Eric, on a level he could probably never admit, wants so badly to be liked, to fit in, that having the kids tell him to "grow up" was enough to make him literally and figuratively kill a part of himself he needed to outgrow. He could only do so when he felt he had no choice (he is a master of self-deceit, of course; he created the entire scenario so he could believe she forced his hand), and only with great sadness, but on some subconscious level, I think he realizes it was necessary. A sociopath is still a sociopath, but we'll see if his behaviour does genuinely change in the slightest. Now that'd be interesting.
[–]burstaneurysm 9 points10 points11 points 10 months ago
Coming off of last week's brilliant and drum-tight episode made this one seem even sloppier than it was. It wasn't terrible, but the strength of the episode was lacking.
[–]Cpt_Hockeyhair 17 points18 points19 points 10 months ago
Now see, I didn't really like last week's episode that much. I still think the high point for this half of the season has to be The Last of the Meheecans.
[–]dancingthemantaray 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
I'm so glad you said that. I didn't think last week's episode was strong at all. I don't know what it is about it. The blowjob jokes just got old for me after the first scene.
[–]roger_ -10 points-9 points-8 points 10 months ago
Last week's episode was kinda one-sided (vegans are douches, etc.)
[–]burstaneurysm 12 points13 points14 points 10 months ago
How do you know if someone's a vegan? Don't worry, they'll tell you.
Matt and Trey routinely take stereotypes to the next level. I can honestly say that I've never met a vegan that didn't make it abundantly clear that they were vegan. I don't think the show was calling them douches, but they were making light of stereotypical vegan behavior.
[–]wassworth 10 points11 points12 points 10 months ago
I've never met a vegan that didn't make it abundantly clear that they were vegan.
Reflect upon the logic of this sentence.
[–]hippiekyle 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
i just busted out laughing as I had to reflect upon the logic for a second before i got it.
Don't worry, they'll tell you.
That's just a stereotype. Of course they'd have to mention it when a conversation about food comes up.
How do you know someone is a meat-eater? Wait for the lame veg\ jokes.*
but they were making light of stereotypical vegan behavior.
I still think the show works best when they deal with both sides of an issue. Stan could have said something about them having morals, or encouraging a practical lifestyle, etc.
[–]MrRGnome 6 points7 points8 points 10 months ago
But it's not a practical lifestyle. Could the world today support several billion vegans?
[–]roger_ -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 months ago
Not sure if you're serious or trolling, but... what?
Meat eating is not sustainable for 6 billion people.
[–]MrRGnome 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Is there that much available farm land in the world fit for agriculture? I attempted to find out via the USDA's very helpful resource but could not distinguish between low value farmland and high value farmland, low being the stuff we currently grow to feed animals.
Farming meat tends to lead to a higher land use footprint, but of lower value land which usually won't support the kinds of crops humans would eat. I'm open to the possibility that we could conceivably grow that much beans and grains as they're pretty versatile crops, but I have doubts as to the current availability of high value land and how much of this land would be needed to replace the diets of all meat eaters in the world. The ranch land lost would not be fit for agriculture in most instances.
While many vegetarian diets might be sustainable for a world level population, so are some meat inclusive diets.
All in all researching this has further opened my eyes to a few things. The first is the efficiency of land use standard agriculture has over ranching. The second is the continued absurdity of some vegan groups and their lobbying campaigns. I can't believe they honestly think that by increasing and subsidizing the supply of soy they will increase demand.
In the end I conclude that the world could not support several billion vegans. Too much whining. Not to mention, any non-vegan among the majority would surely go mad with meat lust and begin eating his or her peers.
[–]dmsuperman 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Meat eating isn't sustainable for any people. Omnivorous diets are what we need. That means some meat. Some meat for 6 (now 7) billion people is perfectly feasible. Especially when so many of them choose not to eat any meat for various reasons as it is.
[–]roger_ -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 months ago
Who says it's feasible? Look at how much damage is being done to the environment just by producing meat for the Western world.
[–]dmsuperman 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago
I'm assuming that by "producing meat for the Western world" you mean "running meat farms in order to maximize profits". The two phrases have nothing to do with each other. You cannot blame the problems of the big meat business on the fact that we eat meat. The problem isn't that we're eating the meat, the problem is the way it's grown in order to maximize profits.
But I guess you can try to just totally mis-represent the argument in order to try to win on the internet. That's the adult thing to do.
[–]roger_ -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 months ago
Businesses are always gonna operate to maximize profits, and people already whine about paying too much even with the current meat farms and all the subsidies.
If it's not practical or efficient to produce meat for the entire world at a rate that people can afford, how exactly does that make it practical?
[–]RisingDamp 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
It was obvious satire. A main point was how the police intervention causes more problems than the protest itself.
[–]numb_doors 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
and how the 99% can't complain about the president they elected because 'black people can't do wrong' so instead they protest the 1% :P
[–]mbairlol 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
Not sure if low on Jameson
or just sandy vagina
[–]McLargepants 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
That seemed like classic South Park to me! I loved it, best episode this season.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
"My house burned down, so everyone has to feel bad for me."
Too big to fail? Fuck that.
[–]roger_ 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Yeah it seemed all over the place. The episode should have been a lot tighter with the 99% stuff.
